HISTORY AND ETHOS Traditional academic education since 1865 – bringing out the best in all children. Lime House School has strong roots in the local community and has offered a traditional academic education since the late 19th century. The school was formally established in 1899 in Wetheral, a small village located five miles to the east of Carlisle. In 2012, three Lime House School reports emerged dated 1865, adding another 34 years to the school’s long history. The school moved to its present location at Hawkesdale near the village of Dalston in 1947, and initially operated as a traditional prep school for boys up to the age of 13 under the leadership of a Mr Lovelock which continued throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. In the 1960s the school was owned and run by a pioneering headmaster, Mr PJ Ingrams, who admitted girls to the school and introduced O Levels and A levels. Mr Ingrams led the school until his untimely disappearance on a climbing expedition to the Andes in 1974. After a short period with Mr A Templeton-Turner as Headmaster, the school was purchased by the owners of Riverston International in London and Mr M Lewis took over as head in 1977. The school continued to grow, partly due to the closure of two local independent schools, Grosvenor House and Overwater School in Carlisle, and in 1983 was purchased by three local businessmen with children at the school led by Mr W Brotherton. School numbers continued to grow and extra boarding houses were created in the local area, in particular at Greensyke Farm where the Junior School moved to and the girls became housed at ‘The Oaks’ in Dalston. Lime House School was purchased from Mr W Brotherton and his family in 1998 by Mr Nigel Rice, Headmaster from 1983 until his retirement in 2017, his wife Mrs Diane Rice, Senior Housemistress and Head of Learning Support and the Bursar, Ms Jackie Fisher. Under their combined ownership Lime House has flourished to become the unique school it is today, offering an exceptional academic education to all children within a stimulating and supportive atmosphere.

NOVEMBER TO FEBRUARY 2023 Thank you to everyone that has provided us with feedback in regards to the changing format of the timetables and the way that we provide information about the sessions. For the November to December provision (Block 2) we have created separate timetables for each area and kept the planners combined for the Allerdale and Copeland area and the Eden and Carlisle area. The planner is intended to act as a calendar that you can add/change as other courses become available. Everyone registering interest in a course will be given a 15 mins call to talk through other courses that might be useful and to introduce you to the team! We are delivering courses in blocks of 6 weeks within school term times and having drop in/feedback/keep in touch sessions during school breaks, the attached timetables/planners have the the next 2 blocks on which takes you up to February 2023 – courses are subject to change where there is low or no uptake, or where a partner organisation has been booked in. Body conditioning (strength exercises) is a great way of improving your cycling. Whatever the season and whatever the weather, you can always do some strength and conditioning training to help you improve your performance on your bike. Let’s take a look at different exercises that are great for cyclists. Menu – The exercises What do you need to do? Exercises with bodyweight Exercises with weights Final thoughts The exercises: Burpees: use the whole body and improve power Leg lifts: these target hip flexors as well as abdominal stabilizers that help smoothen your pedalling. Planks (and variations of them): these improve your core strength and thus make you more efficient on your bike. Lunges: These help with all of the major muscle groups in cycling including calves, hamstrings, quads and glutes. Weighted exercises: kettlebell swings, renegade rows, front squats and single-leg deadlifts are all really useful for improving body condition. What do you need to do? If you’re wanting to improve your cycling and aren’t already doing conditioning and strength exercises, this is a big thing you can do to see improvement. Since cycling uses only one leg at a time, it needs repeated forces and is largely an aerobic activity. Cyclists also need to have endurance and a strong core. Lots of activities address these requirements but there are some that, when combined, are ideal for cyclists and their bodies’ needs. The best thing to do in terms of strength training is to choose exercises that have a similar movement pattern to cycling both with the lower body and the upper body. It’s also important to increase muscular endurance and core strength. What you want from body conditioning is to have a strong support system for when you’re cycling. The stronger you are aerobically, the better chance you will have of staving off fatigue in races and you will have more power potential. The following exercises use dumbbells and kettlebells. If you’re unsure of weight, see what you can manage. If you are unable to complete the set number of reps, lower the weights.

In October 2013 the CReSTeD Council revised their criteria for inclusion of schools and teaching centres within the Register. In many respects the changes may seem cosmetic, a case of re-organisation to place similar criteria together. However, on closer inspection you will find a major difference. In the past we have referred to dyslexia as the focus of our assessment within schools, we updated this a few years ago to read ‘dyslexia(SpLD)’. Our criteria now reads simply ‘SpLD’, the support for children with dyslexia works within a wider frameset that should include all learning difficulties. We have not forgotten our roots, we are still a dyslexia charity, we are simply taking into account the wider picture. Accrediting Schools and Teaching Centres for their Learning Support Provision. We maintain a register of schools and teaching centres which meet our criteria for the teaching of pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties. All schools and centres included in the Register are visited regularly to ensure they continue to meet the criteria set by CReSTeD. We act as a source of names for educational establishments which parents can use as their first step towards making a placement decision which will be critical to their child’s educational future. The majority of schools on the register are mainstream schools that are also able to give excellent help to pupils with SpLD: dyslexia and also – when combined with dyslexia – dyscalculia, dyspraxia, ADD, and pragmatic and semantic language difficulties. In addition we include teaching centres where children can find additional support outside of and /or in addition to their day to day schooling. The register provides guidance for parents who are looking for a school or teaching centre for their child with SpLD and has become established as a first source of such guidance. For example: Parents who contact the British Dyslexia Association, Dyslexia Action or the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity to enquire about schools will be referred to CReSTeD. Many local authorities rely on the CReSTeD register – which is published annually – to inform their financial decisions about funding a placement for dyslexia.
