The Institution was formed in 1912, and has its headquarters in London, UK. It, and its members, are active worldwide, with 50% of its membership outside the UK. The Institution aims to advance the science and practice of train control and communications engineering within the industry, and to maintain high standards of knowledge and competence within the profession. The overriding purpose in doing this is for the public benefit, to help ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and freight by rail.

The Braid Society was founded in 1993 and it has grown since then to include members from across the UK and many other countries. The Society aims to promote the education and practice of the art and craft of making constructed or embellished braids and narrow bands. All appropriate interests are encouraged and membership is open to everyone. Members include professional craftsmen, teachers, collectors, researchers, authors, perpetual students and people who are just interested in the craft. Techniques include Japanese braiding (Kumihimo), Peruvian braiding, ply-split braiding, inkle weaving (narrow band weaving), cord making, loop braiding and other finger-manipulated work, lucet, braiding with tablet weaving, and sprang.

Early Years is the largest organisation in Northern Ireland working with and for young children. We are a non-profit making organisation and have been working since 1965 to promote high quality childcare for children aged 0 - 18 and their families. Early Years is a membership-based organisation, a registered charity, a company limited by guarantee and is governed by a Board of Directors. On 1st November 2007 we changed our name to Early Years - the organisation for young children. When we started our work in 1965 NIPPA stood for Northern Ireland Pre-School Playgroup Association, but as our work developed we realised that this did not fully reflect all that we do so we changed our name to NIPPA - the early years organisation. In 2005 we realised that our work had moved on again and after consultation with members and stakeholders we voted to change our name to Early Years - the organisation for young children. Currently Early Years provides information and training for parents, childcare providers, employers and local authorities.

When the Scottish Ski Club (SSC) was founded, in 1907, the wooden skis of its members would have been more than seven feet long. Just 50 people in Scotland were known to own a pair and all were invited to join the new club. Fourteen men attended the inaugural meeting, including Dr Bruce, a scientist who lived in the observatory on Ben Nevis and used his skis to go up and down to Fort William. This intrepid academic became the SSC’s first chair and the membership fee was set at five shillings.
