After gaining her Arts Degree from Sheffield City Polytechnic, Janet set up her silversmithing business in London where she was based for ten years. She moved to Berkshire where she has stayed, initially becoming Jeweller in Residence at South Hill Park Arts Centre and now teaching her own classes in Woodley. She has been making and teaching jewellery for over 40 years and has had the pleasure of seeing her students enjoy learning about jewellery making and some of her students have chosen to go on to run their own jewellery business. Her designs concentrate on form and technique. Flow, texture and carving informs most of her work. She likes her work to be timeless, enhance the body and come to life when worn by the owner. Her work continues to be exhibited here in Britain and abroad, has featured in a variety of publications including Vogue and is part of the contemporary jewellery collection at the Dallas Museum of Art, USA. OCOSC was founded in 1989 to provide after school childcare between 3 PM and 6 PM in an area where such facilities were in very short supply but in high demand. This has since expanded to include mornings and holidays, an a wrap-around style. In line with parents’ requirements, the organisation is currently able to provide continuous support to children from age 4 to 14, 52 weeks of the year and a single point for collection and/or dropping-off family members of different ages and attending different schools. The objectives that the Club aims to meet through its work include early year education, training and providing care and counselling to children and young people. We cater for the educational, emotional, cultural, developmental and physical needs of the children that attend, in line with Ofsted requirements. Of our 18 staff, 12 have a recognised childcare qualification, 11 a recognised Playwork qualification and we aim to help all staff achieve their paediatric first aid certificate. My work is driven by the urge to experiment and sample yarns. I respond to the environments I find myself in, urban or rural. Trees are a constant inspiration, as are buildings. I have recently been making work concerned with vision and the loss of sight. I favour plant fibres: cotton, hemp, linen, jute and bamboo but also include wool and silk. I have been weaving on small frames since I was a child. Following an art and design Foundation Course, I gained a BA (Hons) in African and Asian Art and Archaeology at SOAS, London University. I have worked as an arts administrator and assistant for artists and arts organisations, gaining a certificate in Arts Management and Levels 1 & 2 OCA Textiles. Having specialised in Tapestry Weaving, I completed the post-graduate diploma at West Dean College in 1997. I exhibit in the UK and internationally. Conversely, I am also working on and researching a medieval-inspired community embroidered tapestry to commemorate the Battle of Lewes (1264). I teach tapestry weaving and crewel embroidery techniques.
