The CITB Site Managers Safety Training Scheme course is designed for site managers, or aspiring site managers. It is designed for those with responsibility for managing, monitoring, implementing and reporting in a construction environment.

Assessment
To successfully achieve the course, delegates must:
Complete all four core exercises
Pass the trainer review and
Pass the end of course exam

The trainer review provides a pass/fail based on the delegate's performance and engagement in the core exercises and engagement in the course overall. Details of this are provided in XA6T.

The paper consists of 25 questions, selected by CITB, covering all aspects of the course. The exam must be taken at the end of the course. Each
Exam paper has:
18 multiple choice questions (each worth one mark)
7 questions in multi-response or short written answer format (each worth two marks)

The exam pass mark is 81% (26 out of 32). The exam lasts for 35 minutes and must be completed within this time under exam conditions. Delegates are permitted to use the Construction site safety - The comprehensive guide (GE700) publication and the Construction site management delegate workbook (XA6) for the last 15 minutes of the exam.

This is a five-day course. Delegates are required to complete the full course (37.5 hours) to be eligible for certification.

The course covers relevant health, safety and environmental legislation affecting safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce. 

The SMSTS course is endorsed by Build UK as the standard training for all construction managers.

The refresher course is only for delegates who have previously passed the five-day SMSTS or subsequent refresher course, and hold a valid SMSTS certificate. Evidence must be provided to the training provider of their eligibility.

Successful completion of the course requires the delegate to pass an exam paper at the end of the course.

This course complements the Temporary works coordinator training course (TWCTC) and is designed to provide training for those undertaking the role of temporary works supervisor (TWS), as defined in BS 5975:2019. The rationale for the TWSTC is to set and raise standards across the industry, and to enable a transferable knowledge base between employers to avoid unnecessary supplementary training.

Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. However, delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a temporary works supervisor. 

Assessment
The examination paper is compulsory and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions selected by CITB. 

It forms the basis of assessing whether a delegate has achieved a sufficient level of understanding to be awarded the Temporary works supervisor training course (TWSTC) certificate. 

The examination lasts for 30 minutes and must be completed within this time. 
The examination is open book.
The examination pass mark is 72%.

Length of Course
This course is designed to be completed in one day. Delegates are required to attend the full day (seven hours) and pass the end-of-course assessment to be eligible for certification.

The course has been designed to give confidence to senior management, and to ensure that those who engage contractors have an assessed standard of knowledge.This course will give the delegate a thorough knowledge of the temporary works coordinator (TWC) role. However, this does not make a delegate competent by itself. Competence requires other attributes, such as experience. 

Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. However, delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a TWC.

Assessment
Assessment will be by a multiple-choice examination at the end of the course. Delegates will also be expected to interact and participate during the course. 

The examination paper is compulsory and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions selected by CITB. It forms the basis of assessing whether a delegate has achieved a sufficient level of understanding to be awarded the Temporary works coordinator training course (TWCTC) certificate.

The course is supported by a number of organisations, including the Temporary Works forum, CECA, Build UK, HSE and FMB. This enables transferability of the training within the industry. Temporary works are safety- and business-critical and require careful coordination. An accepted way of achieving this is through the adoption of the management process outlined in BS 5975:2019, which introduces the temporary works coordinator (TWC) as a key figure. This course explains the role and its overall management context. Temporary works on both smaller and larger sites can be high risk. Therefore, understanding the essentials of good risk and safety management, as outlined in BS 5975:2019, is relevant for projects of all sizes.

A ½ day short City and Guilds 2393-10 course aimed at anyone involved in electrical installations in dwellings. The Government approved Document P (electrical safety) came into effect on the 1st January 2005. For the first time the mainstream work of domestic electrical installers became subject to the requirements and procedures associated with Building Control. Domestic Electrical installers need to appreciate the requirements that apply to building work they carry out in connection with their electrical work, and they need to understand the way that Building Control works and the procedures that need to be followed. Recap of basic phlebotomy theory and practice - precursor to
the advanced course.
M02 - Aspirated and Vacuated Systems:
Open systems (Syringe & Needle), closed systems (Vacutainer & Monovette), Alternative closed systems, Using Monovette - aspiration and evacuated techniques, monovette adapter systems.
M03 - Specialised and Advanced Phlebotomy Equipment:
The centrifuge - overview. Safe operation and use. Managing a centrifuge breakage or spillage.
Equipment and practices in unusual situations.
Patients with special needs and requiring specific attention.
Equipment preparation for blood samples that are collected at
0 degrees, 37 degrees C and other non-standard conditions.
A look at advances in technology and how to use the latest devices.
M04 - Point of Care Testing:
What is POC Testing? Advantages, Disadvantages and Clinical
Outcomes. Comparison of POC with lab testing. 10 common POC tests. Roles for phlebotomists performing POC Tests.
M05 - Neonates and Children:
Sample collection from new-born to pre-adult. A detailed overview of legal principles of law including child consent and child protection for phlebotomists. Neonatal and child blood collection equipment.
A comprehensive look at heel and finger-prick procedures including
microtainers, lancets and capillary tube collection. Detailed heel prick procedure. Paediatric finger prick collection. The life-threatening hazard of over-collecting. Communication techniques in differing age bands.
Consent and the law. Basic principles of lawful consent for neonates and paediatric patients. Child protection.
Detailed analysis of neonatal and paediatric blood collection including Guthrie card collection. Neonatal bottles - colours and tests. Paediatric blood gases collection.
Butterfly needles - when to use. Blood tests during pregnancy. Neonatal blood screening - nine conditions covered. Bilirubin in neonates.
M06 - Geriatric Patients:
The challenges of phlebotomy in older people. Understanding skin changes and venepuncture implications. A profile of common
geriatric blood tests. Age related problems. Procedural precautions.
M07 - Special Procedures:
Drawing blood from back of hand. Drawing blood from lower limb veins. Managing the unwilling or difficult patient. Managing the psychiatric patient. Managing the isolated patient. Non-routine blood tests. Managing the latex allergy patient (type 1 and type 4 reactions). Latex indicators. Sample handling - non-routine procedures. Drug trials and research projects.
M08 - Special Tests and Sample Handling Procedures:
A look at sample collection at specific times of day and night,
samples that are protected from light, collected on ice and
collected at body temperature. Procedures for each group - collection notes, analytic time, optimal collection time and notes for each group.
M09 - Advanced Phlebotomy Tasks:
Additional procedures. Maintaining POC equipment. Stock control and stock rotation. Quality control. Data entry. Product evaluation. Training and competency evaluation.
M10 - Alternative Environments:
A step-by-step look at non-clinical phlebotomy environments including private testing, DEFRA, forensic and police, cord blood collection, DNA analysis, veterinary services, overseas and volunteering.

PART 2 (CLASSROOM)
MORNING , AFTERNOON OR EVENING SESSION:

1 - Welcome, introductions and overview:
- Classroom - health & safety briefing, schedule overview.
- Virtual Classroom - audio/visual checks and registration. Unpacking and overview of your training kit.
2 - Syringe and Needle (open system): Correct use and applications.
3 - Monovette (open and closed systems):
Using the Monovette system in aspiration mode - correct use and applications.
Using the Monovette system in evacuated mode - correct use and applications.
4 - IR Vein Detector:
Demonstration of the IR vein detector for assisting in detection of difficult veins.
5 - Veins in back of hand:
Detecting suitable veins in the back of the hand.
6 - POC testing:
Point of Care Testing - use of glucose meter to demonstrate a typical POC test procedure. Correct use and overview of other POC test devices.
7 - Using lancets (finger collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for POC testing and whole blood micro-collection.
8 - Using lancets (heel collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for neonatal blood spot tests (Guthrie Test).
9 - Capillary collection
Using glass capillary tubes for micro-collection. Correct use and handling.
10 - Microtube collection
Correct use of BD Microtainers (and similar micro-collection bottles) - collection and handling.

This two-day course is a must for anyone who is considering or already working in a role with supervisory responsibilities. This course provides an understanding of health, safety, welfare, and environmental issues. It highlights legal responsibilities and the need to promote health and safety to supervise effectively.
It is endorsed by Build UK as the standard training for all supervisors working on Build UK sites.
Aims
To give a clear understanding of health, safety, welfare, and environmental legislation that affects your supervisory role. To help you fulfil your responsibilities regarding health, safety, welfare, and the environment. To help you implement new guidance and industry best practice affected by changes.
Course Content
• Health and safety law and how it will apply to supervisors.
• Your supervisory responsibilities in controlling site safety.
• Risk assessments and the need for method statements.
• Effective site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefings.
• Monitoring site activities effectively.
• Timely intervention when bad practice is identified.
Prerequisites
This course is for you if you are considering, or already have, supervisory responsibilities.
Assessment
At the end of this course, all delegates will have a clear understanding of controlling health and safety on site from a supervisor’s role.
