Essential knowledge – for counsellors, psychotherapists and anyone else working with distressed people This new online course is designed to stimulate deeper thinking about the ethical dilemmas and professional difficulties you may encounter when working with people suffering emotional distress. It gives you sound principles to remember and realistic guidelines to follow whenever difficult ethical situations arise. Whilst primarily designed for counsellors and psychotherapists, anyone interested in thinking more clearly about ethical matters, including social workers, occupational therapists, mental health workers, medical and legal professionals, can complete the course. The guidance offered is not a list of static ‘rules’ but a framework of interlocking ideas and insights through which it is possible to create clear and reasonable codes of professional conduct to help ensure we act ethically. The discussions between the tutors raise important considerations – deriving from real case histories – and give you valuable insights about the evolution of ethical behaviour and the nature of ethical problems today. Why this course is needed We live in a world that, despite technological progress, seems to have lost its moral compass. It should go without saying that all therapists should act ethically with their patients, but some don’t. The consequences of this can prove distressing and even damaging for the client involved, and, for the practitioner, can mean anything from public censure, suspension from practice, or full-scale striking off. So, in addition to following guidelines and a code of practice, therapists need to develop a sound inner intuition of what the right thing to do is in any particular circumstance. However, developing this intuition requires us to escape from our mental pigeon-holes so that we can develop richer patterns of thought, through consideration of a wide range of potential pitfalls and ethical dilemmas, to draw upon and return to throughout our professional lives. What will you explore The foundations of ethics Ethics and human nature The difference between ethics, morals and the law The reason ethical dilemmas arise The HG Code of Ethics Examples of modern ethical quandaries Living in a ‘victim culture’ that’s obsessed with blaming Why ethical behaviour is socially conditioned The importance of learning from mistakes Why relying on systems can inhibit flexibility of thought and behaviour Why organisational rigidity drives bureaucracies to behave unethically What determines our individual nature, character and mental health The assumptions we make that get in the way of ethical decision making Typical case histories dealt with by the HGI’s Registration and Professional Standards Committee Ethics: needs and wants Ethics, tribalism and political correctness Our inbuilt range of moral emotional responses The illusion of shared perceptions Three ethical safeguards arising from the Human Givens approach The importance of spare capacity when helping others The danger of patients putting therapists on a pedestal Why technology, using artificial intelligence, raises ethical questions Accredited CPD certificate and much more… Counts towards a Diploma By taking this course, you could be on your way to completing Part 1 of the Human Givens Diploma – a flexible, part-time psychotherapy course which will deepen your psychological knowledge and increase your ability to help people effectively and quickly. How to prevent mental illness New insights into the causes of mental illness, including severe conditions like schizophrenia, are explaining distressing symptoms and reducing suffering… Despite the billions spent trying to alleviate mental illness around the world, the rates of mental and emotional distress are increasing. Why? What is going wrong? Why are millions of people so stressed? And what can we do about it? Brilliant online course! At last, a clear explanation of what causes mental illnesses.PSYCHOLOGIST Why take this course ‘From Stress to Psychosis: how to prevent mental illness’ gives you the answers – and much more.. Over the last two decades, course tutor Ivan Tyrrell has played an influential role in integrating psychotherapy and counselling with the latest findings about brain functioning and human behaviour. On his enlightening course, you will find out how this knowledge – and the many insights derived from it – can be easily applied to improve the mental health of people suffering from a wide range of conditions, including the more serious. He explains, among other things, what happens to us when the brain is put under stress; why stress is associated with mental illness; why some people experience psychotic episodes and others don’t; what the difference is between being ‘stressed’ – which doesn’t feel good – and being ‘stretched’, which does. And why people on the autistic spectrum experience stress so intensely. You will also discover what people need to lead mentally and emotionally healthy lives – and what the best type of help is for anyone requiring psychotherapeutic interventions in order to recover quickly from stress overload, depression and anxiety disorders (including PTSD). And you will learn about a revolutionary new theory – described by some psychiatrists as “the only model on the table that explains the symptoms of schizophrenia” – which throws much-needed light on this distressing illness and explains why it has been virtually eliminated in communities where the correct approach to dealing with early onset of psychosis exists. The resulting psychotherapeutic human givens guidelines are already improving treatment – bringing important new hope to sufferers and those working with or caring for them. A different approach to the medical model – more humane and holistic, which is what is needed.OUTREACH & DEVELOPMENT WORKER (MENTAL HEALTH) What will you learn A better understanding of what ‘mental illness’ is The three reasons why all mental illnesses arise Why some stressed people – but not others – go on to experience psychotic symptoms (such as hallucinations, delusions and hearing voices) A richer understanding of the mind/body connection and its impact on our emotional and psychological health What increasing stress levels do to our brains and bodies Information about more effective treatment possibilities that are opening up for clinical psychology, psychotherapy and counselling A moving insight into Asperger’s syndrome Why high functioning people with Asperger’s are easily stressed and cause stress in others What everyone needs to be mentally and emotionally healthy – and how to maintain that wellbeing Natural ways of reducing emotional arousal and avoiding stress overload The central role of emotions in our lives – and why taking it into account is essential for psychotherapy to be successful Knowledge of the APET™ model – which rapidly improves psychotherapeutic outcomes and interventions – and how to integrate it into your work Illuminating case histories The brain as a pattern-matching organ – and what this means for mental health and successful therapy A remarkable observation (shown on film) about the connection between stress, dreaming, depression and psychosis Includes: Course notes Accredited CPD certificate and much more… Counts towards a Diploma By taking this course, you could be on your way to completing Part 1 of the Human Givens Diploma – a flexible, part-time psychotherapy course which will deepen your psychological knowledge and increase your ability to help people effectively and quickly. Developing and using our innate resources well is as integral to mental health as meeting our emotional needs – join HG co-founder Ivan Tyrrell and Diploma tutor Carol Harper to explore them further Accredited CPD Certificate: 5 hours Suitable for: All health and welfare professionals – and anyone interested in what makes us who we are A perfectly coordinated seminar, a ‘dance’ between psychotherapy geniuses Ivan Tyrrell and Carol Harper - I wouldn't have missed it for the worldIAKOVOS FLASKIS Why take this course Nature provided us with a wealth of inbuilt resources to help us get our innate physical and emotional needs met. They are a fundamental part of being human, what we call human ‘givens’, and can be usefully thought of as internal guidance systems that not only enable us to survive but to achieve remarkable things. They have been continuously refined over thousands of years and are still evolving. A lot of attention is given to the importance of ensuring that people’s innate emotional and physical needs are met well – but our resources are an integral part of this: if they are not fully developed, or are misused or even damaged, we can suffer greatly. A clear understanding of these guidance systems, how they work and what they do for us, is essential if you wish to help others, improve our society, or understand yourself and those around you better. This is especially true if you are an involved parent, teacher, manager, or any kind of therapist. If you work with, or for, others you need this knowledge – understanding what makes us all ‘tick’ should be at the heart of everything we do. Amazing! Incredibly fascinating subject delivered with a deep respect for the profound human resources with which we are endowed...DAMIAN FEARNS, TRAINER, FACILITATOR, COACH What you will gain A deeper understanding of yourself and others More insight into the holistic nature of the rich but incomplete patterns that we inherit from our genes How and why these patterns must seek their completion in the environment An increased understanding of how memory is involved in learning – from birth to old age Guidance about how malleable memory is and why forgetting is as important as remembering The unexpected science behind emotional arousal – how emotions are created moment by moment A deeper understanding of the APET model – and why metaphorical pattern matching is central to all human interactions and endeavours Greater insight into why emotions create trance states in us – and the role this plays in many disorders Why being able to go into trance is essential for learning A richer understanding of the important role imagination plays A better understanding of how dreaming preserves the integrity of our genetic inheritance The confidence and skills to build on the instinct for rapport and what happens when that instinct is only crudely met in infancy An understanding of how rapport plays an important part in language acquisition How to counter the blight of loneliness Why reasoning is important and so difficult for some people What it means to ‘know’ something How we can check out our own emotional responses and biases We also consider whether intuition is an innate resource and the role accessing the Observing Self has in spiritual development And much more… No prior knowledge of the human givens approach is needed to benefit from this course. The latest mind body research gives us profound insights into the effects on mental health of 'physical' factors, including breathwork and time in Nature, new ways to improve mental and physical health, and more… This wide-ranging day will deepen your knowledge of the mind-body system and the impact ‘physical factors’ can have on our emotions, state of mind and memory – with additional ways to help people quickly and effectively… Accredited CPD: 6 hours Length: 1 day (9.30am - 4.00pm) A brilliant framework to understand the neurobiology of our needs and how to manage stressDR ALLY JAFFEE, NHS DOCTOR Why take this course Having a deeper understanding of the latest research into the effects on mental health of ‘physical’ factors – such as movement and exercise, time in Nature, ‘breathwork’ and real-time connection with others – enables us to tailor powerful therapeutic interventions and deliver more informed psycho-education. This jam-packed day also covers the physiology of responses such as ‘freeze, fight or flight’, the effects of physical activity on emotional, mental, memory and brain health, why stress can become chronic, the many ways we can activate our innate capacity to restore calm through our breath and attention, why these relaxation techniques work and what they do for us physically. The findings you will explore on the workshop have implications for many areas of mental health, even addiction, and give us additional ways to help people resolve many difficulties quickly and effectively, as well as improve overall health. The HG approach recognises that meeting our emotional needs and using our resources well are key to good mental health – yet the impact of ‘physical’ factors on our emotions and state of mind can be just as profound. Even though our physical needs may appear obvious – a healthy diet, regular physical exercise etc – we know that most of the chronic diseases sweeping through the Western World are linked to “lifestyle”, indicating that many people are not actually meeting their physical needs in healthy balanced ways – despite the vast array of information available to them. Finding clarity about how best to meet our own physical needs can also help us maintain our capacity to help others. Throughout the day, Dr Andrew Morrice, a practising GP, draws on both the latest research and his decades of experience managing the complex combination of mental and physical health problems in General Practice (20 of those years using the Human Givens model). We will sift the sense from the nonsense, and see the fundamentals behind the buzzwords and trends, making it easier to think clearly about our own health as well as that of our patients or clients… Really insightful course with an amazing way into practical applications of the HG concepts...ALIYA DRAKE, HG THERAPIST What will you learn How the now well-known human ‘needs and resources’ relate to our evolutionary past, and physical lives The many ways physical movement affects the functioning of the mind and our emotions A deeper look into the physiology of emotional responses, such as ‘fight, flight, freeze’ and their impact on health Greater knowledge of the fundamentals of how we can find calm – and the very many ways these can be used to help people New information from the latest mind/body research that has implications for therapeutic lifestyle changes Also covered: What is ‘health’? And how do we get it? Key practices to support your own health, as well as your clients’ How to avoid the unhelpful psychology and aversive ‘pattern match’ that many of us have when it comes to ‘exercise’ Whether we can really be addicted to exercise and if so why? A deeper understanding about the role of “Green Space” in mental health Increased knowledge of the ways in which physical changes in the body contribute to emotional distress The many ways in which movement and physical activity are connected with mental health How thinking and moving, memory and place are inextricably linked Why stress becomes chronic (long-lasting) Greater clarity about the role some emotions play in creating physical ill health – and the powerful ways in which other emotional states promote health (including the key role of oxytocin) The science of the relaxation and oxytocin responses, and how these relate to many types of addiction, including smoking Organising ideas to understand how 6 different types of relaxation practice relate to each other A practical exploration of the many ways the relaxation response can be activated through breath and attention – including a new technique for dealing with panic Why some people may have come to believe that ‘the breathing’ can’t or won’t help them Summaries of the role of diet and sleep on our health – along with the factors considered today in ‘Therapeutic Lifestyle Change’ Time to ask our expert tutor questions and benefit from group discussions Course Programme The ‘The Mind-Body Connection in depth: Movement, Emotion and Calm’ course starts at 9.30am and runs until 4.00pm.
