We offer a comprehensive range of distance and on-line learning: Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and other helping intervention courses. For nearly twenty eight years we have provided counselling courses for the caring professions, voluntary sectors, and individual students, both in the UK, and overseas. Southampton Coalporters A.R.C. was founded in 1875 and as such is the oldest and most established rowing club within the city of Southampton. The club has been successfully competing every year since its foundation. Coalporters itself takes its name from the rowers who transported coal to visiting ships on the River Itchen. These workers formed the club in which they could participate using their skills in competition against anyone else who would race against them. In 1884 the club scratched together a crew of 18 to race and beat a previously undefeated racing crew of 14 from the visiting American Navy. The race was set over a five mile course for stakes of sixty dollars . The crew imbalance was more than compensated for by the fact that the Americans could race their own specially designed racing boat, whilst Coalporters had to race in a disused service cutter from the condemned stores in Portsmouth Dockyard. The Americans asked for a rematch for higher stakes for which Coalporters took up the challenge and again went on to win. Soon after Coalporters were challenged by the "Portsmouth Shovelers" which laid the foundations for the more conventional river and coastal rowing competitions of today. The club has progressively grown in stature over the years to become a well renowned and respected club throughout the rowing circuit both locally and nationally. We have been on our present site beside Northam Bridge for over 40 years. The latest addition to the club was completed in 2005, extending the building further towards the water to increase the size of the training / gym area and also extending the back of the club to incorporate a club / committee room. The refurbishment also included the rebuilding of the changing rooms and the installation of new racking in the boat house. In 2019 Coalporters embarked on a new era to develop the club for the future. New storage and club refurbishment is now being planned, the first phase starts with conversion of the Northam Arch project. This will provide more boat storage space for members and our rowing crews.

The minimum age to start learning to drive in the UK is seventeen. You will also need a Provisional Driver's Licence. There are two ways to apply for this. You will need to include a passport photo and original proof of your identity unless you have a modern 'biometric' passport (in which case you only need give your passport number). You can request that the D1 Pack be posted to you at https://www.gov.uk/dvlaforms Provisional Licence: Online Go to https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence and follow the instructions there. How Many Driving Lessons Will I Need? The Department of Transport carried out a survey of thousands of people who passed their practical test over a seven year period and published their findings in 2008. The average was 47 hours of driving lessons, with an average of 20 further hours practising with friends or relatives. Atlas recommend that your driving lessons are two hours long. If you intend to practice with a family member or friend please make sure that you are both aware of the law. When Do You Want Your Lessons To Take Place? At Atlas we're flexible: you decide when you would like to learn. We do recommend that you have your driving lessons at different times of day and also both during the week and at weekends. We will pick you up from your home, or we can meet you at work for a quick lunchtime lesson or for 'rush hour' practice. It's up to you. Choice of Instructors (ADIs) It's important that you feel relaxed and comfortable during your lessons and that you and your instructor 'get' each other. At Atlas we have a number of different ADIs, so we can offer you a choice of instructor in most of the areas we cover. How Soon Can I Take My Test? No-one is allowed to apply to take their Practical Driving Test without first passing a combined Theory and Hazard Perception Test (commonly referred to as 'the theory test'). You will need your Provisional Licence to book these tests, and you can book online at https://www.gov.uk/book-theory-test find out about the Theory & Practical Driving Tests 'Pass Plus': Advanced Driving Lessons It's not a cliche when instructors say that the real learning begins after you pass your driving test. Even if you drive very often you can normally expect it to be at least 6 months before you are the safest and best driver you can be. And it's a sad fact that new drivers - particularly young drivers - are far more likely to have an accident. Road Safety Charity Brake highlighted 2015 data from the DVLA and DfT which showed that, whilst new drivers from 17-19 made up only 1.5% of those licenced to drive in the UK, this age group was responsible (i.e. they were the driver) for 9% of accidents that involved serious injury or death. There are two main reasons: over-confidence and risk taking (including speeding); poor assessment of hazards. Be a Safer, Better Driver with Pass Plus To help new drivers the DVSA has developed the 'Pass Plus' training programme. There is no official test; instead, the assessment takes the form of five to six hours extra tuition covering: Town driving Busy high streets, especially at rush hour, present many challenges. Bad weather driving Rain and poor light increase the danger from hazards. Countryside driving Roads can be narrow, twisting and poorly surfaced. Night driving Things look very different at night. Driving as it becomes dark and the light changes every ten minutes can be challenging too. Dual carriageway driving More challenging than motorways in many regards, not least because you sometimes have to exit right across oncoming traffic. Motorway driving We also offer our own additional lessons specifically for this (see below). Pass Plus: What You Gain Pass Plus lessons with assessment are designed to help you gain quality experience behind the wheel, develop a positive driving style, and hopefully reduce the risk of you having an accident. On successful completion of the course you are issued with a certificate that entitles you to a discount on your insurance premium - as much as 50%, depending on your insurer. Motorway Driving Lessons Almost all new drivers feel most nervous at the prospect of driving on the motorway. Yet, once you become familiar with them, motorways are far less stressful places to be in charge of a car than your average high street! You are travelling at high speed, but everyone is going in the same direction and there are no pedestrians or parked vehicles to worry about. Atlas' motorway lessons are specially designed for newly qualified drivers. We will give you the confidence to go on the motorway on your own by giving you in-depth tuition on: using slip roads to get on and off the motorway; reading signs and reacting in good time; understanding junctions; driving at a constant high speed; and overtaking and changing lane.

Services for schools The Government’s expectation is that schools and colleges will work towards the Gatsby benchmarks. There are 8 benchmarks which constitute ‘good practice’ in career guidance for schools and colleges, they are: A stable careers programme Learning from career and labour market information Addressing the needs of each student Linking curriculum learning to careers Encounters with employers and employees Experiences of workplaces Encounters with further and higher education Personal guidance. Harrow College is now offering a range of new services to local schools for students in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13. The College offer can be linked to the Gatsby Benchmarks as well as support the school to meet their commitment to the Technical and Further Education Bill's amendment passed in the House of Lords in February 2017 by Lord Baker. We provide support to learners to progress from schools onto further education and apprenticeships. We encourage awareness of the many career opportunities available to young people and the vocational or academic qualification route they may need to take to succeed in their chosen career. College staff can assist and work with schools to: • Provide vocational advice and guidance • Collaborate during Careers Events and Parents’ Evenings • Arrange visits to college for individual learners and/or groups • Organise workshops at the College or in your school for specific subject areas allowing students to get ‘hands on’ experience. Parents Evening and Careers fair - Our staff can attend Parents Evenings, Careers Fairs and Year 11 options evenings in your school, to offer advice and guidance to learners, their parents and guardians. Tour for learners and teachers - Our staff are on hand to offer bespoke tours of the College to your staff, learners and their parents. This often helps learners to get a feel for how studying in a college might be like and we will help you advise your learners appropriately. Taster days - We hold taster days throughout the year to engage learners. Taster days can be a half or full day depending on your school timetable and requirements, and most subject areas are available. Presentation and talks – Our industry experienced staff can come into your school and deliver informative presentations to teachers, learners and their parents/ guardians. We understand time can be an issue so we can also deliver presentations at a time and place that suits you. CPD for teachers - Throughout the year our staff host a range of events for teachers and careers advisers. These events are a great opportunity to visit the College, view facilities and hear from vocational teaching teams on the options available to young people.
