Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School was established as a result of a bequest in the will of Oliver Smith. Mr. Smith was born in Hatfield, Massachusetts in 1766. He engaged in farming at an early age, and acquired large wealth by stock-raising. He was a magistrate for forty years; twice he was a representative to the legislature; and in 1820, he was a member of the State constitutional convention. He never married and may have been considered eccentric by his neighbors, but he amassed a large fortune, which he bequeathed to establish the "Smith Charities," a unique system of benevolence. At his death in 1845, his estate was valued at nearly $400,000; and the will was contested by his family. Legendary lawyer and legislator Daniel Webster successfully defended the will for the city of Northampton. The fund for the Agricultural School became available for use in 1905, and the amount of $50,000 was turned over to the City of Northampton for the purchase of land on which to build Smith School. The school opened for students in 1908 as the first vocational school in Massachusetts. Since 1845, when the fund to develop an agricultural school was established, Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School has been at the forefront of a movement toward excellence in vocational training. Today, Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School is a public high school for residents of Northampton and tuition students from all of Hampshire County on a "space available" basis. Students spend alternating weeks in shop and academic programs as they prepare for both a high school diploma and a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency. Graduates of Smith School are expected to meet academic standards, achieve occupational competency, develop ready-to-go work skills, and prepare for continuing education. Integration of technology in course work is encouraged, and students have access to state-of-the-art computer labs with Internet capability. Hopefully it will inspire and help you on your own fitness journey. Fitness has always been a part of my life. Both my parents were or had been in the fitness industry at some point and I grew up being a part of every sports team and club at school. Dancing was a large part of it and I went on to study professional stage dance at college after school. I had danced since I was 3 and It had always been my dream to be a dancer until I injured my back in my final year of tuition. So I taught dance and cheerleading to primary and secondary girls for a couple of years before it was back to the drawing board and with the love of health and fitness and wanting to help people,I went down the trainer path. I first done my exercise to music and my gym qualification then onto my Level 3 personal training certificate. In 2013 I was looking at bikini and fitness models and competitors online in America and said to my old man “I want to look like that!” And his response was “great, go do it.” Without any knowledge or experience in this field I set out to do my research. I started looking at shows, competitors, supplements, training, how to cut, how to bulk, stage tan, bikinis, shoes… the list was endless. I hadn’t thought about a coach before as didn’t know they existed then (now everyone and their gran seems to be one). My dad was a bodybuilder in his teens and early 20s so asked him for a little help. And by little he told me if I was looking okay or needed to be leaner. Very funny when I look back now.

I am an experienced teacher based in Ilkley specialising in Secondary School Mathematics. I offer individual tuition in Maths for pupils from Upper Primary School through GCSE to A Level. By working as a tutor on a one-to-one basis I can build on the teaching received in school by identifying their individual needs and recognising and resolving their difficulties with this key subject. I believe all young people have the ability to achieve in Mathematics and the key ingredient is having confidence that you can master the topic. Many people are familiar with that feeling of not knowing where to start in maths and the loss of confidence undermines motivation making understanding difficult. By working with a tutor pupils can identify what they are able to do and then progress from the point at which they feel secure. Pace and approach is individually tailored to their needs and compliments methods already met in school. I have worked in Maths Education throughout my adult life. I gain a great deal of pleasure from working with young people and contributing to their development. For me the greatest reward professionally comes when a pupil has been struggling with a topic and suddenly they ‘get it’. I am also available to tutor adults who are seeking to improve their maths or need support to gain a maths qualification. During in the COVID 19 pandemic I continued to tutor using Zoom. This worked well and there are some advantages to using this medium - sharing IT content, recording worksheets plus no need for the student to travel to a lesson. Face to face tutoring is also an option at my home address, where I have a dedicated tutoring room. I shall be pleased to discuss the assistance you or you child needs and also the most suitable method for teaching the maths session.
