Thistle Aikikai is a member of the Scottish and Borders Birankai under the technical direction of T.K Chiba Shihan. The Chief Instructor, Michael Flynn Shihan began his study of Aikido in 1982 at San Diego Aikikai under the direction of Shihan TK Chiba. He was named Shihan in June of 2005 and was awarded 7th Dan by Doshu Ueshiba Moriteru on 14 January 2018 during the Kagami Baraki celebration at Hombu Dojo. He was formally awarded his Shihan Certificate in a ceremony at Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo in November 2006 by the second Doshu, Ueshiba Moriteru. He has also received Iaido Shihan title from Mitsuzuka Sensei. Since arriving in Scotland, Flynn Sensei has established the Thistle Aikikai. He serves as the Chairman and Technical Director of Scottish and Borders Birankai. Thisle Aikikai offers beginner through to advanced classes in Aikido and weapons. All are welcome. Instruction in Iaido , the art of drawing the sword and striking a killing blow, is also offered at Thistle Aikikai. In Iaido, students learn to use the sword not merely as a tool for cutting down one’s enemy, but as a method of allowing the mind and body to become more harmonious with nature. During training, students will learn the forms of the Muso Shinden Ryu Iai as developed by Nakayama Hakudo Sensei, with a goal toward synchronizing their breathing and body motions within the techniques in order to understand and practice the efficient use of the body. Welcome Who are we and what do we do? Books Beyond Bars UK is a collective of volunteers who send books and other educational materials, free of charge, to incarcerated LGBTQIA+ people across the United Kingdom. If you are an LGBTQIA+ person in prison, or know someone who is, click here for a copy of our main order form or here for a ‘discreet’ version with the full name of the project and any specific reference to LGBTQIA+ content removed. We receive letters from LGBTQIA+ people in prison in the UK stating what kinds of books and/or resources they want and need. From the books and zines we have in stock we then put together packages containing books, educational materials, and LGBTQIA+ resources. We try to meet requests as closely as possible based on genre and type from the books donated to us. Our decision to launch this project in the UK has been inspired by our sister project in the US, LGBT Books to Prisoners. The team there have sent book parcels to more than 8,000 incarcerated people across the US. To do this work, we rely on donations of books and funds to cover costs such as postage.

Somerset Community Food was established as a Registered Charity in 2001. Our aim is to reconnect people with local healthy food through community action. We support the network of community food projects active in Somerset. We provide training, run community food conferences and send out a local food newsletter several times a year. We also host Incredible Edible Somerset a forum and information hub for community food projects across Somerset. We are currently working with Somerset County Council and Somerset Community Foundation on the Somerset Growing Projects Network. In all our work we value: Choice - We recognise that people have very different ideas about what constitutes 'good healthy food' and that a healthy diet can be achieved in different ways. Kick start your career in the building industryI have been working in the wider timber processing-building products industry for over 20 years.  With a background in operations, human resources and health and safety management roles I have a good overview and understanding of the barriers that can hinder a person’s ability to enter or remain within the industry. Not everyone has the same opportunities or ability to forge a prosperous future for themselves or their families. The Building Futures programme is a purposeful way for me to contribute to the wellbeing and enduring lifestyles of rangitahi here in the Hawkes Bay community.  Helping someone to secure a job within this industry is satisfying and rewarding.  Knowing that could have a positive impact on their future, makes it priceless. I am a wife, mother, and grandmother so I have amassed a wealth of experience in life and many of its stresses.  I don’t believe I have all the answers, but I have learned that having listening ears is invaluable and sometimes a hug goes a long way towards making things better. We hold regular meetings with a range of speakers; giving members the opportunity to exchange views, network and obtain information on topical issues. We send regular correspondence to ensure that members are kept up to date with events, local or national government policy & regulatory changes that impact on the Independent Sector. Membership of GCPA is considered a sign of a progressive organisation, committed to delivering the highest standards of care and keen to play an active part in the county’s wider social care community. Representatives of the Gloucestershire Care Providers Association attend regular strategic and liaison meetings with Social Care Officers, to discuss and review contracts, procedures and other issues. We also work very closely with the NHS, including the Clinical Commissioning Group and Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust throughout the county, working together on a variety of initiatives aimed both at tackling immediate issues facing vulnerable people and designing better ways of working for the future. In addition we have strong links with CQC (Care Quality Commission) and regularly liaise with Senior County Councillors, local MPs, local authority Commissioners and other decision makers, influencers and interested organisations.
