Bournemouth

It is with great pleasure and much pride that I welcome you to Avonbourne Boys’ and Girls’ Academies website. We are proud to be two non-selective 11-18 schools based in Bournemouth and incredibly privileged to be part of the multi–Academy Trust, United Learning. Avonbourne Academies are also extremely fortunate to be part of the Bournemouth and Poole Cluster, where we work closely, and share good practice with Glenmoor and Winton Academies, Avonwood Primary School and The Cornerstone Academy. At Avonbourne Academies, we believe that every child matters and every lesson counts, and we believe in the importance of creating well - rounded citizens who achieve academic excellence. Avonbourne is a highly inclusive school that caters for the needs of all students. We ensure our most able students are stretched academically and students with special educational needs and disabilities are expertly supported, allowing the Academies to ensure the best in everyone. We were delighted to celebrate excellent GCSE and A level results in the Summer showing the huge improvement already achieved at the Academies. Avonbourne Boys' and Girls' Academies are two co - located schools that joined United Learning in 2019 with lessons being taught in a single - sex environment in Years 7-9, with opportunities for mixed sex teaching from Year 10 onwards . This has proved to be hugely successful with resources, staffing expertise and curriculum opportunities now being fully utilised for the benefit of all students at the Academies. Co-location has been seen by all stakeholders as offering the ‘best of both’, which I believe provides our students with the best possible chance of educational success. The school also hosts the United Sixth Form and provides teaching of the highest quality, excellent facilities, a caring and supportive environment, as well as delivering a comprehensive range of social and enrichment activities. As an organisation, we expect everyone to embrace our core REACH values of respect, equality, ambition, community, hard work & determination. Students can access a huge number of extra-curricular opportunities across the Academies, and I am hugely proud of our sports teams, creative performers and STEM enthusiasts. I hope you find the information on this website useful and please do not hesitate to contact the Academies if you wish to organise a tour and see for yourself the excellent work being done by the outstanding students who attend Avonbourne Boys' and Avonbourne Girls' Academies. If you would like to be kept up to date with developments at Avonbourne then I recommend following us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and accessing the Academies' newsletter.

Heatherwood Academy

heatherwood academy

Heatherwood's Equestrian Academy is available for private & small group lessons or you may join us for one of our week-long summer day camps. The Academy teaches safety around horses, horse anatomy, proper grooming, feeding and housing, equipment use and learning to "tack up" a horse. Riding covers proper seat, leg and hand position as well as learning to walk, trot and canter using correct diagonals, leads and gait. Each rider will be assessed to determine the pace at which they will advance to the next level. Heatherwood's goal is not only to teach horsemanship to our students, but to foster a bond between the rider and horse in order to develop a sense of awareness and sensitivity to the special attributes of their relationship. Every animal and guest at Heatherwood is treated with respect and kindness. Children often gain self-confidence and independence in their abilities to care for themselves and our animal friends. Private & Small group lessons - Offered in eight week sessions consisting of a 1/2 hour session each week. Small groups consist of two riders. Riders should plan extra time both before & after each lesson to help groom & tack up their horse if able to do so. Heatherwood facilities offer indoor & outdoor riding arenas for year round instruction. We also take students on our riding trails. We welcome adult & child riders of all levels, from beginners to those ready to advance to jumping. Whether you want to learn to ride for pleasure, advance to horse shows, or ride for an excellent way to exercise, Heatherwood Academy will tailor a program for your interests. Birthday parties - For up to ten children with riding lessons given for the party guests. We provide the cake, drinks, & decorations. Your guests learn about different breeds of horses & will groom a horse. Parties are scheduled year round. Boy & Girl Scout Troops - Individuals or the whole troop may come to Heatherwood to work on and earn merit badges. Educational Programs - Offered to schools & special groups, in the classroom or outdoors (weather permitting) or visit Heatherwood for an educational field trip. Doncaster Book Awards

doncaster book awards

The Doncaster Book Award strives to promote reading for pleasure among our young people, in order to create a positive attitude towards books and reading and to extend reading choices. This will, in turn, lead to improved literacy levels, better educational outcomes and thus improve future economic prospects for Doncaster’s children. We also strive to provide children with opportunities for new and exciting experiences based around books and reading, to encourage positive social interaction between young people from all parts of the Borough and thus help make Doncaster a thriving reading community. All About Us The Doncaster Book Award (DBA) is a not-for-profit Social Enterprise Company Limited by Guarantee. It is run by a committee of five volunteers who give their time free of charge. We are fully inclusive and all our events and activities are open to everyone and free to attend. ALL of the funding generated goes to cover running costs and provide our young people with fun and exciting reading-based activities. We are now into our 14th year of operation and have gone from 13 schools in our first year to over 75 in 2018. The DBA is unique in that it is entirely child-led; the website, logo and slogan have all been originally designed by the young people of Doncaster; they also choose the books on our lists, and they vote for the shortlist and winner each year. No adult gets a say! Our website is designed to give children a voice about what they are reading via our Reviews page and to showcase their activities. We are developing this idea further by providing slots for our young people on our monthly radio show and podcast on Sine FM. We provide an exciting and varied programme of events, activities and competitions that keep the profile of reading high, generate enthusiasm and the idea that reading is fun. These have been extremely varied and have included: visits from hugely popular authors such as Cressida Cowell, Andy Cope, Darren Shan, Simon Mayo, Cathy Cassidy and many more illustrator talks and workshops from artists including Chris Riddell, Viviane Schwarz, Liz Million, Chris Mould and Martin Brown Drama and Dance workshops working with a local theatre company, Talegate Theatre Vlogging workshops Poetry slams Ceramics workshops Sports-themed events ... the list goes on! Check out our Events page to see pictures and reports of our activities over the years. None of this would be possible without the generous support of our sponsors and we’d like to thank you all for helping to make it possible.

Maggie's Studio - Artist, Tutor, Writer, Mentor

maggie's studio - artist, tutor, writer, mentor

maggie hollinshead Create - I have been creating things for as long as I can remember, my work is mostly mixed media and textiles. I share my creativity as commissions and artist-led garden design. Commission Client - “Wow, you’ve really understood us” Garden Design Clients - “I’m very impressed you have created something special, it’s a real garden” “I can’t believe that’s our garden” Inspire - I am passionate about my creativity and I enjoy helping others to find their creative side through creative workshops and classes Creative Workshop Student - “Maggie is the most inspiring artist/tutor, she is so generous with sharing her knowledge. She encourages you to search deeper to find your own style, she gives and receives lots of pleasure in the process.” Encourage - I also enjoy helping others through creative mentoring and my work delivering creative sessions within NHS Mental Health settings facilitated by Arts for Health Creative Mentoring Client - “I've been running my small, creative hobby-business for several years now with a relative degree of success. It's grown organically over the years without any real business planning and direction. However, in 2022, I decided that I wanted to try and change this approach so that I could start to develop a more sustainable lifestyle business and Maggie's creative mentoring sessions have been hugely beneficial in this process. The distant learning sessions encouraged me to really think about my business goals, strengths and weaknesses and understand more fully the barriers that have been preventing me from moving forward with the business. The one-to-one sessions then provided a safe space to share ideas and worries with Maggie as well as work on the all-important masterplan of things I need 'to-do-' to take the business to the next level from hobby business to professional business. We covered so much in such a short space of time from branding, product ideas and pricing structure to social media strategy and also drank a lot of coffee! It really is hard not to feel inspired in Maggie's company. Her enthusiasm, knowledge and experience is inspirational and hugely uplifting and true to her word, she does indeed have a warm and infectious smile. She really does encourage you to feel that anything is possible and I'm excited to be moving forward with my business plans as 2023 approaches. I would highly recommend Maggie's creative mentoring sessions to anyone just starting out on their creative business venture or to those who have reached a bit of a crossroads and are unsure what steps to take next. With Maggie by your side, you'll come away energised and enthused and with a list of actions to help you develop and grow your business.”

We have a long and proud history, having educated boys for over 100 years: we have been a technical school, reported as the most improved boy’s school in the country, a community school and now an academy, a single school and now the founding ‘brother’ to our sister school, Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls. We have year-on-year exam results at GCSE and A Level that make us, our students and their families rightly proud. Yet our relentless focus is upon the futures of our current students as we counsel them through their educational careers to be the most successful version of themselves. To support your son through their secondary education, we have firm foundations in exemplary pastoral care and expert teaching. Safeguarding our students is the absolute priority that informs the behaviours we demonstrate in the staff and student bodies. Our pastoral care and personal development programme are child-centred, empathetic to individual children’s needs, recognising their challenges and assisting with overcoming them. We care; we listen; we understand context and we actively build meaningful relationships with every child. Our teaching is equally child-centred, offering support and challenge as required to ensure that all our students achieve the grades they need to pursue the courses and careers they aspire to with confidence. Our curriculum is designed so that students can make interconnections between the various subject disciplines, hence stimulating a culture of curiosity and questioning so that all our boys leave us as well-rounded, caring members of the community, ready to navigate the adult world safely, critically and knowledgeably. We also recognise that child development is enhanced through pleasure and we therefore cater for their personal interests with an extensive enrichment programme, including wellbeing days, our Activities Week, curriculum and reward trips and a variety of clubs. There are always opportunities for your son to have their voice heard, whether through the Student Council or more informal feedback to tutors, teachers and head of year or our dedicated student voice co-ordinator. I am confident that you will have made the right choice for your son by privileging us with his care, education and personal development so welcome to the Poly family.

Live More Offline

London

In this digital age there is more competition for our attention than ever before. This has a knock on impact on our lives as where we place our attention determines what we experience and how we feel... I, Alex La Via, was inspired to set up Live More Offline after noticing the impact of digital technology in my work and home life. Digital wellness is about using technology in a way that brings us closer to the things and people we value rather than being distracted away from our goals. Examples of unhelpful digital habits can be the extra episode of Netflix which leaves us feeling tired the next day, digital notifications that get in the way of focused work or scrolling time away yet feeling we don't have the time for the things we love. I am passionate about helping people to create a relationship with technology that is on their terms and creates the life they want! Alex La Via The Live More Offline approach is rooted in the evidence base of mindfulness and neuroscience. Drawing on research emerging on the impact of digital technology on focus, memory, creativity, empathy, wellbeing and sleep, to name just a few areas. I have experienced the 'always on' culture first-hand, within my corporate career, and understand the challenges of managing the blurred line between work and home life. In addition, I noticed my greatest challenge with technology on relocating to Yorkshire in early 2018 and being between jobs. At this time, I started spending more time on social media and Netflix. After noticing the impact on my life, I took the bold decision to disconnect from digital technology by flying to Spain and walking 500 miles on the Camino de Santiago. Spending six weeks walking in nature and disconnecting from digital technology, I felt energised, healthy and inspired. This led me to question how to get the right balance back at home. From this moment, I have undertaken academic research and furthered my training into the impact that digital technology is having on wellbeing and creating the lives we want. I now bring this combination of personal experience and knowledge to empower others to find a balance with digital technology which supports their goals and the life they want to live. It would be a pleasure to help you in creating meaningful change to meet your needs and goals. Experience: Over ten years' experience working within Big Four accountancy and FTSE 100 / FTSE 250 in-house environments Academic research with a Masters Degree in Mindfulness-Based Approaches at Aberdeen University, with a research focus on the impact that digital technology is having on wellbeing and the potential for mindfulness in digital habit change Qualified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Teacher, listed by the UK Network for Mindfulness-Based Teacher Training Organisations as a mindfulness teacher who adheres to the UK Good Practice Guidelines Qualified digital wellness coach Studied with Judson Brewer's 'Mindfulness-Based Behaviour Change Facilitator' Training Course Qualified Mental Heath First Aider
