Formerly Joanne Heald, Joanne graduated from Trinity College of Music in 2005 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Voice, BMus (Hons) and Trinity’s Silver Medal for Vocal achievement. Her singing and acting credits include Kenneth Branagh’s film The Magic Flute, Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes, Larina in Eugene Onegin at Jackson’s Lane Theatre, London, The Stepmother in Neely Bruce’s Musical Hansel and Gretel at The Mick Jagger Centre, Woman and Nun in The Saint of Bleeker Street at the Peacock Theatre in London and the Father in an all female cast of Hansel and Gretel at The People’s Theatre London. She has sung the soprano solos of many oratorios and scared works in the UK and America, including Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, Regina Coeli and Exultate Jubilate, Faure’s Requiem, Haydn’s Salve Regina, Nelson Mass and Handel’s Messiah. Joanne began her teaching career at Bird College of Dance, Music and Theatre Performance, where she taught Singing, Piano and Music Theatre within the Music Department and school programmes. She combined this with being a Music Examiner for A Level with the OCR exam board and conducting the Bexley Youth Choir. After 11 years at Bird College, Joanne moved to Russell House Preparatory School in Kent where she became the Assistant Head of Music and was involved with teaching Music and the school’s choral endeavours including conducting a prize winning Chamber Choir. Joanne played the piano at all school events and helped coach the singing and dance for their Musical drama performances. She left in July 2018 to have her 3rd child. Since relocating to Derby, Joanne is Parish Organist and leads the choir at St Stephen’s Church, teaches singing at Stagecoach and coaches Musical Theatre Students. Joanne also teaches the LAMDA communication syllabus which includes: Speaking Verse and Prose, Reading for Performance and Speaking in Public. Theatre people. Joanne is a licensed chaperone. Imam Abdul Hafeez Siddique is the Founder and CEO of The Flowhesion Foundation. He is an experienced, qualified Muslim Chaplain who studied at a traditional Islamic seminary in Bolton. Abdul graduated from the seminary at the age of 17 making him, at the point of qualification, one of the youngest Imam’s in Britain. Post qualification, he serves as a Muslim Chaplain at HMP Wymott where he works as part of a multi-disciplinary, multi-faith team. Abdul has a strong academic background in community cohesion and social capital research. After completing his undergraduate degree in this field, he was awarded a postgraduate scholarship by the Mariott Trust. Subsequently this led him to become the first person in the Northwest to look in to how members of the South-Asian Muslim community in Bolton interpreted the terminology and lexicology surrounding community cohesion. He asked these difficult questions to marginalised members of the bamer community. The research allowed Abdul to undertake an in-depth theoretical study of the evolution of the concept: community cohesion and his in-depth qualitative interviews formed the basis of his study that was supervised by Professor Carole Truman and Dr Margaret Boneham at the University of Bolton. This seminal study came to fruition in the form of a thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) titled ‘A critical analysis of Cantle’s (2001) community cohesion model and its applicability to marginalised elements of Bolton’s south-asian Muslim Community’ that was awarded to him in 2011. In addition, Abdul has over 10 years experience working with socially excluded immigrant BAME communities and their representatives in Bolton to promote community cohesion and build social capital.

The institution's original buildings were the first in the country to be purpose-built for the professional training of teachers. The first cohort of 10 male student teachers had been taught in temporary premises in Nicholas Street from February 1840, until increasing student numbers led to a move to further temporary accommodation in Bridge Street later that year. The need for a permanent site led the Dean and Chapter of Chester Cathedral to donate land adjacent to Parkgate Road and the new facilities were opened in 1842 for the 50 student teachers and their school pupils. The Parkgate Road Campus has subsequently been developed to accommodate the needs of students and the University still provides higher education in this location and at other sites in the city and beyond. Education qualifications remain significant and are now a fraction of the 420 course combinations on offer. In the 20th Century, the institution steadily expanded its student numbers and the variety and nature of its courses, which range from Animation to Zoo Management. The University of Chester now has over 1,700 staff and some 20,000 students, drawn from the United Kingdom, Europe and further afield, particularly from the United States, India, China, Nigeria, Turkey, Uganda, Pakistan, Ghana, Bangladesh, Qatar, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. As well as undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, a new range of foundation degrees and apprenticeship degrees combines conventional university study with learning at work. MPhil and PhD qualifications are an established and growing area of activity, with the University gaining the powers to award its own research degrees in 2007. The emphasis is very much on research that has practical benefits both economically and culturally, and the University provides consultancy support across a variety of areas of expertise. Recent projects have included helping to develop England’s first ‘carbon neutral’ village, discovering a vitamin compound which reduces the risk of heart disease and dementia, translating the Bible into British Sign Language, and research into understanding the psychological impact of cancer to improve wellbeing and quality of life for patients and their families. Development of well-respected courses in Health and Social Care, Humanities, Business and Management, Arts and Media, Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry and Clinical Sciences, and Education and Children’s Services has further extended the University’s work and connections with industry, commerce and the professions. Many millions of pounds are continually invested in the accommodation and resources to enhance the student experience and there is a strong focus on making students feel supported and at home. Recent developments include the addition of two large accommodation blocks (Grosvenor and Sumner Houses) and a significant expansion of the learning resource centre at the Parkgate Road Campus. The Handbridge former Western Command Army HQ, in which Winston Churchill held wartime meetings with international politicians, is now the Queen’s Park Campus and opened for the academic year 2015/16 as a base for the Faculty of Business and Management, educating the leaders of tomorrow. This followed the launch of Thornton Science Park in 2014/15, hosting the UK’s first new Faculty of Science and Engineering in two decades and bringing together teaching and research with business and innovative industry practices on one site.

About Us The Scottish Universities’ International Summer School (SUISS) offers an intense, challenging and diverse programme of study that takes place annually during the months of July and August in Edinburgh, the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. We offer three courses in Text and Context: British and Irish Literature from 1900 to the Present, one course in Creative Writing, and one course in Contemporary British and Irish Theatre and Performance. Our literature courses offer extensive examination of Modernism, Contemporary Literature and Scottish Literature, while our Creative Writing course allows students to develop their personal writing portfolios. The Theatre and Performance course, which explores both theoretical and performative approaches to drama, coincides with the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and is delivered in partnership with the Scottish Playwrights’ Studio. We are located at the University of Edinburgh, and run by a team of hard-working individuals, led by the Administrator and Co-Directors. This core team, along with our advisory committee, oversees the lecture programme and management of the summer school each year. In the summer, we employ volunteer student hosts, who are SUISS graduates themselves. They are on hand to address the needs and concerns of our visiting students. Our very talented tutors, who are usually in the process of completing a PhD in a literature related field, instruct the seminars. Simon Brooks works with schools and educators around the world interested in building cultures of thinking, where children delight in their learning and develop deep, meaningful and lasting understanding through the process of becoming critical and creative thinkers. Simon holds an Honour's degree in English Literature from Cardiff University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of Worcester, and a Master of Educational Studies degree from the University of New South Wales, Sydney Australia. In 2014, he was the recipient of the prestigious UNSW Dean's Leadership Award, and was honoured to become a fellow of the Project Zero Institute at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is currently in the process of writing a book introducing a new framework for teaching and learning called Curiosity-Based-Learning. Educator - Facilitator - Change Agent Simon has enjoyed many years’ experience in senior educational leadership roles, working in both government and independent sectors in the UK and Australia. His first significant leadership role was as Head of English at Cleeve School in Cheltenham, UK. Following this, Simon spent ten years as Director of Teaching and Learning at Masada College in Sydney Australia, developing close connections with Dr. Ron Ritchhart and the Project Zero team at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In this role, Simon led the transformation of the school into a lighthouse school for Cultures of Thinking pedagogy and practice, and became a key influencer in the cultures of thinking movement in Australia. Simon’s most recent in-school role prior to becoming an independent educational consultant in 2016 was as Regional Principal for an international network of independent schools. In 2017, Simon became a founding member of the Project Zero Sydney Network, and continues his work with this not-for-profit organisation designed to share Harvard Project Zero ideas with the educational community. In 2018, Simon and his family moved from Sydney to Cheltenham in the UK, and he continues to work closely with partner schools in the UK, Australia and around the world.
