This is a recording of a session which took place on Zoom on Thursday 3 July 2025.   Are you interested in developing programmes and exhibits with LGBTQ+ content for children and families?    About this training    During this training session, we will address the challenges museum staff and volunteers face when creating LGBTQ+ content for children and families. Alongside this we will discuss strategies for advocating for this content and explore resources for planning and implementation.    This webinar will be led by Margaret Middleton, a freelance exhibit designer and museum consultant based in Manchester. Their background is in children's museums and they have written and consulted widely on creating LGBTQ+ museum content for families, especially those with children aged 10 and under.    Margaret will be joined by Dylan Saul, Family Programmes Facilitator and Moa Strand, Families and Young People Programmes Manager at Royal Museums Greenwich and Daniel Jessop, Learning and Community Engagement Officer at Novium Museum, who will talk about their LGBTQ+ work for children and families.     The session will help you to:  Understand the importance of this work, Think critically about the challenges you may face undertaking this work, Develop ways to advocate for this work, Gain inspiration from case studies to take your own work forward.   Take a look at the full schedule.    Who should attend?  This training is aimed at staff and volunteers who work in museums, art galleries and heritage sites and are interested in developing programmes and exhibits with LGBTQ+ content for children and families.

The Emergency First Aid at Work Awareness Course is ideal for businesses, especially in low-risk environments. This course covers all the core competencies outlined by the HSE, making it an acceptable workplace first aid course. Completing this course allows you to be an appointed first aider in the low-risk workplace. It meets HSE workplace first aid requirements and aligns with the latest UK Resuscitation Council guidelines. Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider a. Identify the role and responsibilities of a first aider b. Identify how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others c. Identify the need for consent to provide first aid 2. Be able to assess an incident a. Conduct a scene survey b. Conduct a primary survey of a casualty c. Summon appropriate assistance when necessary 3. Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty a. Identify when to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) b. Demonstrate CPR using a manikin (including the use of an AED device) c. Justify when to place a casualty into the recovery position d. Demonstrate how to place a casualty into the recovery position e. Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is experiencing a seizure 4. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking a. Identify when choking is: - mild-severe b. Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking 5. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding a. Identify the severity of external bleeding b. Demonstrate control of external bleeding 6. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock a. Recognise a casualty who is suffering from shock b. Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock 7. Creating sensory backpacks for families with Special Educational Needs (SEND) Webinar recording Do you want to create sensory backpacks for families with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), but don’t know where to start? About this training In the UK, 11% of children are disabled and in England, 18.4% have special educational needs. Adding non-disabled siblings to these numbers increases this potential audience to a fifth of children in the UK. This simple fact is a powerful advocacy tool to make a business case for SEND inclusion in your museum. One way to support SEND families during a visit is to create a sensory backpack. These resources don’t cost a lot to create, and they can make a powerful difference to a SEND family’s visit. Their economic impact, promoting a longer dwell time and potentially greater spend in the museum, pays back an initial investment quickly. In this session, SEND in Museums Consultant Sam Bowen will guide you through how to create a sensory backpack, drawing on her own professional museum learning knowledge and lived experience as a parent of a child with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
