This intensive 13-hour interactive workshop is designed to teach educational and caregiver teams the theory and protocol for the Picture Exchange Communication System® (PECS®), an evidence-based practice based on Applied Behaviour Analysis, typical language development, and B.F. Skinner’s Verbal Behaviour. The workshop begins with an introduction to creating the most effective learning environment for implementing PECS® and The Pyramid Approach to Education®. Included is a discussion of the limitations of teaching other communication modalities (speech, sign, SGD) as an initial communication strategy. Using presenter demonstrations, role-play opportunities, and video examples participants will gain a thorough understanding and hands-on experience of each of the six phases of PECS. Participants will leave the training with the skills necessary to teach spontaneous requesting, picture discrimination, sentence structure, attributes for expanding language, responding to questions, and commenting. The workshop concludes with a review of the extensive literature supporting PECS as an evidence-based practice, tips to teach your learner to accept being told, “No,” and information related to transitioning from PECS to other communication modalities, such as speech, tablets with AAC apps, or speech generating devices. For those who wish to successfully teach their learners functional communication (whether you have used PECS for some time or are new to the field), this workshop is an essential part of your development. Join Daniel Docherty and Sheetle Shah for this practical two-day course exploring sacred pattern and the art of henna. On the first day of the course Daniel will give an overview of the practice and philosophy of Mandalas from various traditions. Participants will be introduced to certain key characteristics and significant symbolism inherent within traditional Mandalas. We will learn how to construct some of these sacred patterns using the traditional tools of compass and straightedge. Sheetle, a henna artist with 20 years of experience with this traditional art form, will guide participants through the processes of making and preparing henna paste 'from scratch'. You will learn how to apply intricate patterns to paper, hands or feet depending on your preference! Henna is a natural pigment with remarkable staining qualities. You will learn how it is traditionally applied to hands and feet during festivals and celebrations; today, henna is also applied for ‘belly blessings’, cosmetic tattoos, semi-permanent face painting, hair dye and has developed many other creative roles.

The Firth of Forth is a stunning and diverse location for photography. During this full-day session we will travel across both the North and South banks of the River Forth to capture some amazing locations from characterful old jetties to the Forth Bridges; from the smallest port in Scotland to hidden bays. This is designed for people who know the basics of their camera and want to learn how to take stunning landscape and seascapes images whilst discovering the beautiful scenery around the Forth estuary. Attendees on the session will learn how to create stunning images in-camera through the use of filters and more advanced composition techniques. The full-day session commences from first light and will last until sunset so there are many opportunities to practice your skills. During the day we will also spend some time looking at how we can use editing software to enhance your images. The workshop will have a minimum of two and a maximum of six attendees to ensure that everyone receives individual attention from a professional photographer. About Ideal if you understand how to set the exposure of your camera manually and want to learn how to use filters to improve your photographs. We visit several locations along the banks of the Forth River to capture sunrise and sunset, panoramas and change the way we see movement in water. This is a full-day workshop, picking up from Edinburgh a couple of hours before sunrise and returning about an hour after sunset. Lunch is not included Experience level – intermediate and advanced What to Bring A camera that you can set the exposure manually A good sturdy tripod. It is helpful to have a wide-angle lens and a long zoom, although if you only have a kit-lens then that will still be fine for this workshop. You will need a filter system such as Lee, Nisi or Cokin with ND and ND graduated filters Ensure your camera batteries are fully charged and strongly consider having a spare An empty memory card, we’ll take about 150 photographs during the session.
