Following requests from young people for a safe meeting place in Monmomouth local residents came together with young people to meet that need. The group became known as Monmouth Youth Project. In 2001 the Attik youth centre was opened (by the Bus Station) providing Monmouth’s young people with a safe place to socialise which is supported by professional youth workers. Young people were actively involved in the design of the Attik and the appointment of staff. In 2011 the Attik relocated to the Library Annex, next to the Library on Whitecross Street. At the Attik, young people are able to access a range of facilities, activities, trips, workshops and on site services including specialist youth workers, counselling and a young people’s health clinic. OPEN TO ALL YOUNG PEOPLE The Attik is open to all young people aged 11 – 25 years though it is mainly used by those aged 11 – 16. Those aged 16 and above tend to drop in for specific services. The Attik is free to use. Staffing – Youth workers are employed by Monmouthshire County Council’s Youth Services. Staff are qualified to National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 in Youth and Community Work or working towards this qualification. All staff and volunteers with access to young people have been cleared by the Data Baring Scheme (Criminal Record Bureau).

Photographer | Writer | Speaker | Teacher | Judge I dreamed of becoming a photographer when I was 15, but my mother wanted me to go to Oxford instead! I ended up reading English at Oxford and working as a strategy consultant for a few years before retiring at the age of 29. I then travelled round the world for seven years, doing four ski seasons and working on an internet start-up in San Francisco before finally returning to London in 2005. At that point, consulting work felt too stressful, so I decided to go 'quality of life'. I'm now a private tutor and international award-winning wildlife photographer. I became a tutor in 2009 when I happened to read an article in the paper called 'Ten Ways to Beat the Recession', and I started taking pictures again when I received a random email inviting me to go on safari and climb Mount Kenya. I've been a wildlife photographer since 2013, taking pictures in 26 countries on all seven continents and winning various awards including the Sunday Times/Audley Travel Big Shot. I spend a lot of time in Africa, and I’ve been on over 300 game drives and boat rides there. I’ve also worked as a Resident Photographer at various safari lodges: 2019: Klein’s Camp, Serengeti Under Canvas, Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp and Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp 2020: Gabus Game Ranch and Etosha National Park in Namibia 2022: Ol Jogi in Kenya and Muchenje in Botswana. I'm always happy to answer questions from guests, whether it’s about camera settings, the rules of composition or just identifying all the different species of wildlife. Back at camp, I'll give the odd talk on camera technique, give feedback on their images and show them some of my own. Maybe I’ll see you out there…! Artist’s Statement I have a passion for wildlife, and I want to celebrate all its facets in my photography, including power, beauty, cuteness and humour. These are the qualities I want to share with people. I’m not a conservationist, so I don’t take pictures of endangered animals to put on posters for Greenpeace or Friends of the Earth. I take them because I love close encounters with the natural world, and I want to share the excitement, relaxation, tenderness and wonder they evoke. I started out taking 'portraits' of animals. That was all very well, and a lion might look beautiful sitting on the African savannah at sunset, but there isn't much energy in that sort of picture. What I try to do now is to focus on action shots. I still take portraits - and sometimes I don't have a choice! - but my ideal image is much more likely to be a cheetah chasing down a Thomson’s gazelle than a bird sitting on a branch! My favourite animals are the predators, and the advantage of a long lens is that it can create the impression of being right up close and personal with some pretty dangerous beasts. It’s that sense of excitement that I try to capture in my work, and I'm happy to use whatever technology I can find to do the job. Friends Of Fairlands Farm

In 2017, The Comet,, a local newspaper, issued an appeal to find a way to restore and revive Fairlands Farm - to save it from 'wrack and ruin.' It reported that the farmhouse had been registered as an Asset of Community Value. The registration had occurred when a few residents of the local neighbourhood had noticed dereliction of the site. After making enquires to Stevenage Borough Council, they sought the help of a local charity based in their area, to prevent the council from executing their undesirable plan. Leading the residents, the charity could only ensure the site's registration and, refusing to take advice, ultimately could not develop a viable proposal for the use of the farm. Although aware the farmhouse was a Grade II listed building, the group's ambitions blinded them to its implications. Efforts to sell the site had first been made around 2008 when the local council sought to raise funds for town-centre redevelopment. That is really when our story should begin, but until ghosts from the past came to guide us ten summers later that wasn't known. The town-centre scheme had barely begun when prospective investors got cold feet due to a global financial crash, but it gave time to ensure the farmhouse gained its listed status which was a local historian, Margaret Ashby had first proposed in 2004. In 2011 further attempts were made to market the farm, but with the listing now in place the was no party willing to take on the risk. By 2016, lack of investment left the house unsafe for occupation. After 25 years at the farm, the trustees of Digswell Arts Trust decided it was time to call it a day and the artists cleaned their brushes for the last time. With the property unoccupied for the first time since 1990, the council returned to its plans to sell the property to a pub or restaurant chain for the third time. Renewed determination to rid itself of the albatross around its neck, the council commissioned a condition survey to establish the extent and cost of repairs needed, but the plans failed to pass under the radar of the ever-watchful residents, and so it came to our notice. Reading about the plight of the house, Friends of Fairlands Farm recognised that an organisation dedicated to ensuring respect for the long heritage of the farm, that its place in the hearts of the people of Stevenage, would be necessary to commit to and sustain its longevity, and so the CIC was formed. We hope that the former dairy farm and arts centre will once again proudly stand central to the whole community of Stevenage and invite you to support and join Friends of Fairlands Farm on this journey. Is it merely to pass exams so we can get to the top schools and universities? Is it to enable us to further our careers? Or is it to help us become well-rounded, independent thinking, confident individuals who are then able to take a full part in society? “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” (Nelson Mandela) I don’t claim to have all the answers, but after more than twenty-one years as a teacher, in both, the maintained and the independent sector, (and eight years in the advertising and publishing industry prior to that), one thing is clear: We get one chance and one chance only at education, and teachers get one chance with us. I set up Millie-Whizz to provide an individual, holistic approach to teaching, to complement the excellent work teachers do in schools because sometimes this is not enough. It’s a numbers’ game, after all. The idea was not to provide tutorials which simply focus on doing paper after paper, question after question, in the hope that something would sink in. Millie Whizz is a tutoring service that explains the whys and hows so that pupils not only learn what method they should use to solve a particular problem, but they actually understand the reasoning and are therefore empowered to apply that knowledge. The ethos of Millie Whizz is based upon helping children and young adults to overcome difficulties in their learning so that achieve great results in their school work, their exams and in life. Sometimes it is their fear of learning; sometimes it is their lack of motivation; sometimes it is boredom and lack of inspiration. So it follows then that a person who is happy in their learning will want to learn more. This leads to success in all areas, not just in their education. Feeling successful gives us an enormous boost, which leads to increased happiness and ultimately, to freedom. So how can we apply this freedom to education? The knowledge and understanding pupils gain, empowers them to experiment with formulae and arguments so that they begin to question the “What if…?” Tutoring is not just for those who struggle, but it works equally well for those who need to be stretched in their thinking so that they reach their full potential. If you do what you’ve always done and in doing so, achieve the same level of success each time, wouldn’t you want someone to show you a more effective way of maximizing your results? With global economies opening up and highly qualified people from all over the world wanting a piece of the action, there will, undoubtedly, be more competition than ever in the jobs market in years to come.

The Town Council has twelve elected members who give their time voluntarily for the benefit of Shaftesbury and its residents. The Council elects one of its members to be Town Mayor in May of each year, electing a Deputy Mayor at the same time. The Mayor presides over all Town Council meetings. Membership The Full Council meetings are attended by all members of the Town Council and are presided over by the Mayor and, in their absence, the Deputy Mayor. There are twelve Full Council meetings scheduled each year, beginning with the Annual Meeting which takes place in May. Responsibilities The Full Council meetings approve and adopt the minutes of Town Council and Committee meetings, receive reports on the Mayor’s engagements and correspondence and receive reports from Dorset Councillors and local organisations. The meetings also deal with contractual, financial, legal and policy matters that Committees do not have the remit to resolve. Committees The Town Council has one formal committee – Planning & Highways, meeting on a monthly basis. Dates for meetings of the Council’s Committees can be found on our Meetings page. In addition, the Town Council has two advisory committees – Shaftesbury Swimming Advisory Committee and Mampitts Advisory Committee, which both meet on an ad-hoc basic. Terms of References for all committees are contained within the Scheme of Delegation. Planning and Highways Committee information Parish or Town Meetings A parish meeting may be convened by any six local government electors for the parish. Not less than seven* clear days’** public notice is to be given of the meeting, the notice specifying the time, place and business to be transacted. The notice must be signed by the person or persons convening the meeting and will not be issued in the name of the clerk of the council. Public notice must be given by posting the notice in some conspicuous place(s) in the parish and in such other manner (if any) considered desirable by the person(s) convening the meeting. Usual places are public notice boards, post offices, village stores, village halls, etc. There is no statutory requirement to publish the notice in the press, although this often happens. The press and public have the same rights of admission to a parish meeting as they have to a meeting of the parish council (Public Bodies (Admission to Meetings) Act 1960). You are advised to contact the Town Clerk for further information and guidance if you are considering calling a Parish Meeting. * If the business proposed relates to the establishment or dissolution of a parish council, or the grouping of the parish under a common parish council, fourteen clear days’ notice is required. **clear days do not include the day of issue, the day of the meeting, public holidays or periods of national mourning

The Pony Club is an international voluntary youth organisation for young people interested in ponies and riding. Founded in England in 1929, and granted independent charitable status on 1st January 1997, there are around 330 Branches and 400 Centres in the UK alone. The Pony Club has been the starting point for a large majority of equestrian team members and medal winners. The Pony Club is represented in no less than 27 countries with a worldwide membership exceeding 110,000 making it the largest association of young riders in the world. Objectives The objectives of The Pony Club are: to encourage young people to ride and to learn to enjoy all kinds of sport connected with horses and riding to give instruction in riding and horsemastership and to educate Members to look after and to take proper care of their animal to promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty to create strength of character and self-discipline Membership Membership is open at any young person under the age of 25. Structure The Pony Club Office is based at Lowlands Equestrian Centre, Warwickshire from where The Pony Club is managed by a permanent staff responsible to The Board of Trustees and the Management Committee. Incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee Registered Company Number: 3072475 Registered Charity Number: 1050146 Areas The Pony Club is split into 19 Areas, with a number of Branches and Centres in each, across the country. Each Area has an Area Representative who will represent their Branches and Centres at Area Representatives meetings. Branches Each Branch covers a geographical area and is organised using the purposes and the rules of The Pony Club. Every Branch is administered by a voluntary District Commissioner helped by a Committee made up of voluntary members. Pony Club Branch Membership is open to anyone under 25 years of age. Members should have access to a horse or pony, by ownership or loan, and have the means to transport the horse or pony to and from rallies and events. Centres In 1998, the Centre Membership scheme was launched for those, without their own pony who ride at riding schools, to become Members and take part in all that The Pony Club has to offer. There are currently around 400 Pony Club Centres spread across the UK. Activities at the Centre are run by the Proprietor and their Coaches. New Pony Club Centre Membership is open to anyone under 25 years of age who does not own a pony. Members pay an annual subscription and receive instruction at a Pony Club linked Centre, this subscription constitutes Membership of the Club and includes third party insurance. Since January 2016, Centre Plus Membership is also available for young riders with their own pony who ride at a Pony Club Linked Centre.

Urban Bees helps bees in towns and cities by working with communities, charities and corporates to educate people about the importance of bees and improving forage and habitat in urban areas. We provide ‘bee makeovers’; practical steps for transforming our environment and our thinking to help bees and other pollinators – from planting trees and flowers that offer year-round food, to making and installing homes for wild bees. Urban Bees was set up a few years ago by Brian McCallum and Alison Benjamin. They wanted to share their passion for their new beekeeping hobby with other city dwellers and to make the urban environment more bee-friendly. Their first training apiary was in Battersea, south London. With funding from the Co-op Plan Bee, they set up a teaching apiary in Camley Street Nature Reserve in King’s Cross and a community apiary in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. They now produce Regents Park honey from their apiary in the royal park, maintain hives and bee-friendly planters for a number of corporate clients, and advise and educate through books, newsletters, talks and consultancy about how to help wild bees. ""Brian McCallum Brian runs Urban Bees. He is a qualified teacher and worked for nine years as a part-time seasonal bee inspector for the government. He is a member of the Bee Farmer’s Association and the co-author of four books on bees, Keeping Bees and Making Honey, A World without Bees, Bees in the City, and The Good Bee: A Celebration of Bees and How to Save Them. Brian provides 'meet the bees' sessions for a number of corporate clients and other organisations. He created the 'hive talking' bee map to match existing and aspiring beekeepers and people who want to host hives. He educates children, young people and adults about bees, writes blogs. He tweets @Beesinthecity. Alison Benjamin Alison co-founded Urban Bees. She is a journalist, author, educator and bee-friendly plant expert. She co-authored Keeping Bees and Making Honey, A World without Bees, Bees in the City, an urban beekeepers’ handbook; and The Good Bee: A Celebration of Bees and How to Save Them. She was part of the team that designed the award-winning King’s Cross Bee Trail App. And she created a solitary bee garden at the 2018 RHS Chelsea Flower Show with River of Flowers which won a silver medal. After a 20 year career at The Guardian, Alison is now pursuing her passion for wild bees, by doing bee makeovers, creating and maintaining bee-friendly planters, writing newsletters, giving talks and developing partnerships to improve forage and habitat for bees and pollinators in towns and cities.

Suitable from birth to pre-school, we have chosen toys specifically to help in all areas of your Childs development. Our play space is the perfect fun day out in Durham and the North East. The team at Woodland Play Patch look forward to meeting you all at our creative play space! What we are about Owned and ran by Craig and Sophie Williams, parents to their son Avery and Ivy-Isabella, Woodland Play Patch was designed to offer a welcoming and calming play space to all parents, carers, babies and toddlers within County Durham and across the North East of England. After giving birth to Avery, Sophie felt limited with places that she could take Avery to, that had a focus specifically on babies and younger toddlers. Most places that were available were targeted towards older toddlers with a small baby pen and were so large and busy that often anxiety of taking Avery out meant that she often stayed at home. After attending a local toddlers group in Durham, where she met like minded mums, Sophie realised the importance of building a strong mum friendship circle and over the years from Avery being born to opening Woodland Play Patch, has created some strong mum friendships that she knows she has for life. After being "that mum" herself, Sophie and Craig wanted to create a space where mothers, fathers and carers can come with new born babies and toddlers, without the chaos of soft play. Somewhere intimate, where over time, customers will always see a familiar face and to encourage mums to sit together, talk and socialise. Somewhere, that allows the children to grow and develop where they can come as babies and enjoy until they start school. Five years on, Sophie is now lucky enough to benefit from Woodland Play Patch herself. After giving birth to their second child, daughter Ivy during the Pandemic, Sophie now has a strong community of mams, who she has met from Woodlands New Mam Socials. Although Woodland Play Patch was interrupted during the pandemic, we have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know our customers over the last three years and seeing how the little ones use their imaginations with our toys. We have a strong, loyal customer base of families who enjoy talking to other families, who there is always a friendly face when you visit.
