The Horse Institute is the vision of Marie-Claude Stockl and Larry Stockl, two seasoned corporate executives who grew frustrated with spending valuable training budgets on the same old courses year after year. (Think drab conference rooms, endless slide show presentations, and the relief of logging on to e-mail for distraction.) Understanding that the only thing more challenging than providing best-in-class coaching is getting attendees’ attention, Marie-Claude and Larry made it their mission to create a dynamic new teaching method -- one that engages participants in a more impactful, insightful and memorable way. Introducing The Horse Institute, where real-world corporate leadership expertise meets experiential coaching in the form of Equine Assisted Learning. The Horse Institute’s human and equine faculty guide participants to “Aha!” moments in the areas of leadership, effective communication and teamwork, then translate them into actionable next steps that transform workplace performance. Learning with horses provides a whole new perspective. We call it Leadership Development Through Fresh Eyes. Located in the Heart of the Historic Hudson Valley The Horse Institute is situated on 30 scenic acres about 100 miles north of New York City and a few minutes drive from the town of Pine Plains. Surrounded by rolling hills, local farms and stunning views, The Horse Institute offers a breath of fresh air and a "fresh eyes" experience away from business as usual.

I was interested in making and designing from a very early age and was intrigued by the intricate cake decorations that a family friend made in sugar. I was, and still am, always building and making things with my father who is an engineer and he repaired and made jewellery, so I had a little knowledge of the techniques he used in his loft studio. I studied art and design at Bath college with an amazing group of inspiring tutors and one of the pieces that I used in my application was a flower made from copper which was my first piece of soldering. When applying to universities I was breath taken by the silverware at the Buckinghamshire University degree show an knew from that point I wanted to work in metal. I gained a BA in Designed Metalwork and Jewellery from Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College where I was taught by an exceptional group of tutors who still influence my work today. This took me to become a fellow of the Bishopsland trust where I developed my range of stainless steel and silver jewellery while on the year residential programme. This was an excellent platform for me to learn all about how to start up a business and how to do craft fairs. Pope and Oliver along with the visiting tutors do an amazing job at this very unique programme.

It wasn’t until adult life, after going through a series of experiences which led to a deep depression that I was brought back on to my mat once again and really began a deep understanding and connection to the benefits yoga. I teach at several venues in Hertfordshire and abroad. I am trained in hot yoga but I also teach non-hot and enjoy guiding yogis from early beginners to advanced practitioners. Yoga is a practice for everyone and although my journey as an instructor started as mind rehabilitation and a spiritual journey, utilising breath and mindfulness, I have come to recognise the health benefits for the body. My passion is to constantly learn more and educate myself further to pass this on in my clients.

Students and staff also benefit from its projects with partners such as the Institute of Physics, the British Council, various embassies and key universities. It is always amazing to reflect upon the enormous range of curricular and extra-curricular events, activities, trips and enrichment opportunities that have helped to develop and realise the potential and the differing talents that exist within our student and staff population. The success of the academy is due to the dedicated staff that make all these things happen and to students, parents, partner organisations, alumni and ‘friends of Cranford’ who participate so enthusiastically and work so hard for success. In this way, Cranford works together as a united and harmonious team to achieve such amazing results and create so many opportunities. I remain extremely proud of the academy, its students and its community.
