Lowimpact

lowimpact

Lowimpact is a co-op with ideas, inspiration, information and advice on low-impact living: how to reduce your negative impacts on nature, and increase positive ones. We network with other groups who are building the components of a new economy that doesn’t damage people, communities and environment, and we work with specialists building new monetary / exchange systems that form the core of this new economy. If you believe that humanity is on the wrong path, then you’ll find plenty of resources here to help get ourselves onto a better one. Explore our topics to find ways to bring about changes in your own life, large and small. Tell us what you’re doing, and offer advice to others. We recognise that large, centralised institutions are keeping us on the wrong path, intent on maintaining a status quo that gives them their wealth and power. Read about our ‘new economy’ agenda, and if you agree, then help build it! There are no leaders or gurus. You’re just as important as anyone else. Welcome – please explore, play, contribute and take what feels right for you. Watch and read our interviews with fascinating and inspiring people building the components of a new system; post your thoughts – we’re interested in hearing ideas and hosting respectful debate; change your consumption habits; get your business into our directory; help start a mutual credit club in your community, and build the elements of a new economy around it; hone your arguments; think; discuss; do; help shape a movement to reduce our impact on nature, build community and increase happiness.

Slamfresh

At SlamFresh, we believe poetry can make a big difference to young people’s lives. But the need to create a nurturing and supportive environment in which to write has never been greater. Although the popularity of the art form, particularly spoken word, continues to grow on an unprecedented scale, last year, for the first time in our country’s history, poetry was nearly made an optional GCSE subject. As well as this, the recent closure of schools has meant that young people from lower economic backgrounds have been put at an even greater disadvantage than they already were. Cut off from schools, many of these young people simply have not had the space or resources to access creative opportunities, at a time when they need them more than ever. SlamFresh is a CIC based in the Newcastle upon Tyne which aims to address these problems. We run workshops that focus on the contemporary styles of spoken word and slam poetry, styles of writing which we have found can engage some of the most reluctant students. SlamFresh work in partnership with schools and community centres to mentor young people in writing, editing and performance. We have 3 company directors, Rowan McCabe, Michael MacDonald and Jeff Price. Rowan McCabe and Michael MacDonald (stage name Donald Jenkins) also serve as the two primary facilitators for the workshops, although guests may be brought in on a freelance basis where required. The directors met through their work as professional poets. Collectively, they have spent over 40 years working with children and young people.

Broadstones School “To Educate, Motivate and Inspire Young People to Achieve in a Nurturing Environment” Broadstones is a DFE registered independent special school. It caters for learners aged 13-16 that find traditional school settings problematic and find learning through vocational activities beneficial. At Broadstones, we specialise in helping those that may have fallen behind, or out of education due to social, emotional or mental health issues, to catch up and identify a clear path to post-16 education. Our most recent Ofsted report states Broadstones is a GOOD school, where learners “make good progress” and are “happy and feel safe in the school.” “Staff are quick to form excellent relationships and re-build pupils’ self-confidence and self-esteem” and “teachers design work to meet the personal needs and interests of each pupil. As a result, pupils engage in learning and make good gains in their progress and development.” The school’s “approach is re-building pupils’ broken understanding of how to be successful in society. Staff are skilful in nurturing and supporting pupils’ social and emotional needs.“ For the full report open the link in the Ofsted section at the top of this page. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum with both academic and vocational courses. Please see the curriculum section of the website for details. The local context (a small industrial town in rural northern Cumbria) is, perhaps, not one you might associate with academic excellence and yet we were the first secondary school in the county to have been judged “outstanding” by Ofsted under their revised framework. You will probably want to see for yourself what we have to offer and, to this end, I would be delighted to show you around. Emotional Intelligence – Plus (EQ+) I have always been a firm believer in the promotion of so-called ‘soft skills’, in Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and in improving the ability of pupils to interact effectively with others in different contexts. Many pupils suffer when they find themselves in a different social context (e.g. a discussion with an adult, a classroom presentation etc.) and find it hard to adapt. So, a few years ago, as part of the School Development Plan, we promoted this across the school through normal lessons and Form Periods to help pupils recognise its importance, and encouraged pupil progress in eight key areas, using where possible pupil role-models as teachers. These days, we regularly revisit EQ, albeit informally, encouraging pupils to be ‘EQ-competent’ and ‘interview ready’. And more recently, we have also embarked on a related project with an external company keen to promote Oracy Skills. Initially, we focussed on the whole of Year 8; latterly, we have adapted the programme to target around 100 pupils (from Year 7 to Year 12) who we believe might benefit more than others from this kind of intervention.
