All of the pottery is made using red earthenware clay and traditional craft methods. Most of the work is thrown on the potters wheel and decorate using coloured slips and glaze. Sometimes materials are added to vary the texture. It may then be torn or broken and reassembled to make contemporary vessels created or recycled from pieces. The images, colours and textures are based on drawings made in the garden or allotment. Using a love of traditional slip decorated and county pottery to comment on our contemporary relationship with the environment. Red clay represents a need to connect with the earth and our long history of care,use and misuse. These pots create an honest picture of this relationship, both good and bad. Standing up for earwigs and brussels sprouts, rusting wheelbarrows and decay, as integral parts of the landscape. Without them life would be infinitely dull and sterile.

After a career of teaching music in Scottish schools, I took up pottery at night classes and became hooked enough to complete a B.A . Hons in Ceramics at the iconic Glasgow School of Art. It was here that I made many connections with wonderful potters the world over, and received a brilliant education in this magical material. I aim to show my delight in ceramic form , texture and colour with great attention to detail and concern for the practical use of functional pieces. I also love to experiment with the expressive and imaginative possibilities of glaze in purely abstract work. From 2007 -2019 my husband and I lived in Stromness, in the Northern Isles of Orkney. Here we were drawn by an amazing landscape, constant reminders of its Neolithic past, and by its unique cultural and natural heritage. Grounded in agriculture and fishery, submitting to the limitations of island life and the often very challenging weather, there is a discipline in living here which corresponds to working with clay- one cannot control everything but must work with what is given. In 2019 we moved south to the Scottish Borders to be closer to family. From being surrounded by sea, we are now in the most landlocked area of Scotland and surrounded by trees! Studio visits can be made by appointment and I also teach individuals and small groups, so whether you are local or a visitor, perhaps we will meet one way or another!

NEWPORT ON TAY

Forgan Arts Centre is a thriving hub rooted in the community and strives to offer educational and cultural opportunities to people of all ages and abilities, in an environment that enriches well-being. Established in 1978, the Centre offers a wide variety of modern and traditional classes and events to the residents of Newport-On-Tay and surrounding towns and villages. Weekly classes include Pottery, Upholstery, Jewellery, Painting, Dressmaking, Charcoal drawing, Printing, Stained Class, Watercolour, Photography, Life Drawing and more! In addition to our popular, long-running courses, we run new workshops, classes and events each season - so be sure to keep an eye on what we're doing. You can follow us on Facebook and Instagram too. The Centre is a Registered Charity (SCO08537), managed by a volunteer Management Committee and run by our Centre Coordinator team. Committee meetings are held approximately every two months. Additionally, there is an Annual General Meeting which all members are welcome to attend. We are largely self-supporting through running classes and events, and also currently receive some grant support from Fife Council.

Charitable Purposes The Scottish Potters Association objectives are the advancement of the Arts and Culture and in furtherance of this: To promote and encourage the making, appreciation and development of Scottish pottery and ceramic craft, art and culture. To provide information and opportunities for communication and collaboration between ceramic makers, artists and the public. To work in partnership with other organisations. To provide and promote Equal Opportunities such that; the organisation will not discriminate based on race, sex, disability, sexuality, age or based on political, religious or other opinions. As and if required by funders and/or members, the fuller Local Authority Equal Opportunities policies may be adopted. Activities To meet those objectives, the SPA aims to: arrange opportunities for the public: to see potters at work; to get hands on with clay; to see potters work on display; run workshops for members; organise demonstration events for members; organise public exhibitions of members work; produce and distribute a map of potters active in Scotland; provide financial support in the form of a bursary; provide opportunities for members to network.
