The RYA Competent Crew course is aimed at beginners to the world of sailing, with little or no experience, who want to become active crew members rather than just passengers. After the course, you will be able to steer a yacht, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in the day-to-day routines of sailing a yacht as well as rope handling and general duties. To take this course, you must have completed at least 5 days, 100 miles and 4 night hours on board a sailing yacht, and must be 16 or older. 5 Day Sailing Course - £695 RYA Instructor/Student Ratio max 1:5. We normally sail with 1:4 Check Dates And Availability IMG_3247.JPG RYA Coastal Skipper Or Yachtmaster Offshore Prep The RYA Coastal Skipper practical course is aimed at yachtsmen and women with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation who are wanting to undertake coastal passages by day and night. After this course, you will have the confidence to skipper a yacht on a coastal passage by day or night. Or if completing the Yachtmaster Offshore prep you will arrange with the school to book a RYA Examiner to take the 8/10 hour practical exam soon afterwards. To take this course(Coastal) you will have completed at least 15 days, 300 miles, 8 night hours and 2 days as skipper on board a sailing yacht, and must be 17 for Coastal and 18 for Yachtmaster Offshore for which you will need 2500 miles and three skippered passages over 60 miles plus 50 night hours. 5 Day Sailing Course - £695 RYA Instructor/Student Ratio max 1:5. This course is a requirement for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. Materials supplied. VHF book and exam paper. All professional drivers of large goods vehicles must have a Driver Qualification Card, or DQC. There are a small number of exemptions, but essentially if you’re driving an HGV / LGV (licence categories C, C1, C1+E or C+E), then Driver CPC is a legal obligation. Professional PCV drivers with equivalent licences are also required to hold a DQC. Ongoing requirement Whether the initial DQC was gained as part of the drivers’ initial licence acquisition or by attending Driver CPC training courses, Driver CPC is an ongoing requirement. It is mandated by EU law (Directive 2003/59) and is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of drivers, as well as enhancing safety on our roads. The requirement for Driver CPC has not changed as a result of Brexit and there are no Government plans to do so – the relevant regulations pass into UK law. We believe that done well, Driver CPC training makes a positive contribution to the road transport industry, supporting the ongoing professional development of the drivers who make such a valuable contribution to our society. What must a driver do? Each DQC is valid for five years from the date of issue. This means that – unlike the 2014 deadline set when Driver CPC was introduced – each driver’s renewal date is unique to them. All drivers must undertake 35 hours’ periodic training before the end of the five years following the issue date on their DQC. If the training is not undertaken during that time, they will not be permitted to drive professionally until they have completed their 35 hours. The best way to ensure that a DQC doesn’t lapse is to carry out at least one day’s mandatory periodic training every year. To check your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) training record, visit the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency website. The consequences If a driver is caught driving commercially without their Driver Qualification Card: Both driver and operator face fines of up to £1000 Driver suspended from driving commercially until training is completed Possible reduction in driving workforce, and operations adversely affected If operations are affected, your reputation with customers could be damaged If convicted, operator’s OCRS rating will drop to red Likely increase in insurance premiums What should I look for in Driver CPC training? When choosing your Driver CPC training provider, look for a wide range of relevant topics for drivers to choose from. This keeps the training useful, interesting and engaging. Look out for interactive elements, such as videos, quizzes and feedback sessions, which will benefit drivers, and add real value to the training.

The main aim behind Driver CPC is to improve road safety, providing better qualified drivers to help reduce road casualties. Driver CPC also aims to bring an improved professional and positive image to the industries, attracting more people to drive buses, coaches and lorries for a living. It is aimed not only at improving the knowledge and skills of LGV and PCV drivers when they first start work, but also ensuring those skills are maintained and developed throughout the driver’s working life. For new drivers it introduces a new initial qualification which increases the amount of knowledge that drivers need before they can drive. When combined with the current licence acquisition tests, the initial qualification comprises a four hour theory test and a two hour practical test. All drivers, new and existing, will then have to undertake 35 hours of training every five years to ensure that their Driver CPC is current. This is known as Periodic Training. Periodic Training is designed to confirm and expand on the existing knowledge and skills of each driver to ensure that they continue to be safe, courteous and fuel efficient drivers. This will also enable drivers to keep up-to-date with ever changing regulations and to benefit from training throughout their whole career. All existing professional PCV drivers who held a full, valid category D, D1, D+E or D1+E licence at 10 September 2008 will need to complete the 35 hours of Periodic Training by 10 September 2013, unless they are exempt. After this, they will need to undertake a further 35 hours of training in every subsequent five year period in order to retain their Driver CPC. Existing PCV drivers are known as 'Acquired Rights' drivers i.e. drivers who already held a full vocational licence to drive buses and coaches prior to 10 September 2008. Drivers who hold a D1 (minibus) entitlement by virtue of passing a car test pre 1997 are not classed as acquired rights drivers and will therefore need to complete the initial qualification.

Bill is chairman of The Education Partnership, which has for the past twenty years provided a truly comprehensive range of governance and compliance expertise to schools, colleges, and outdoor education activity centres. He was previously a Head Teacher of all-age boarding and day schools in the maintained and independent sectors, including those for children with complex learning and behavioural needs. Bill works with proprietors and Head Teachers in preparation for and following up inspections by Ofsted (Education and Social Care) and ISI (Regulatory Compliance and Education Quality). His expertise in this area covers NMS, RSS, dual registration, initial registration, final registration and material change. Bill also works with schools judged as “inadequate” by Ofsted or “unsatisfactory” by ISI, helping them to achieve “good”, “outstanding” and “excellent” Ofsted or ISI outcomes. Bill is approached by an increasing number of proprietors, chairs of trustees and headteachers, who find themselves in challenging circumstances. This includes schools that have received a warning notice from the Department for Education due to their failure to meet the Independent School Standards Regulations (ISSR) and/or the National Minimum Standards (NMS) for boarding and residential special schools. Consistently, these schools see improvements at subsequent inspections. Currently, Bill is undertaking a longitudinal study of independent proprietorial schools, examining the governance implications of compliance and external inspection outcomes. To this end, we are looking for proprietorial schools in England for whom we could undertake a free of charge one-day compliance health check in return for participating in a confidential semi-structured interview on this subject at the end of the day. Advice Note AN 06 Safe working practices on roofs: the distinction between ‘walkable’ and ‘non-fragility’ has been produced to remind all those involved in roof work construction that they have a responsibility to be aware of the most up to date advice on safe working practices and also to be compliant with the legal requirements. Guidance document GD 32 Self drilling fastener installation tools explains that screw guns are an installer essential when working in roofing and cladding construction, as they ensure that the optimum mechanical performance of a self-drilling fastener is obtained, guaranteeing the integrity of the building envelope. Impact drivers should not be used! Their repetitive impact action can lead to drilling failures, reduce the fastener pull-out performance, and damage the coating or strip the moulding on the fastener head.
