Most importantly, our instructors are trained not just to provide answers, but to listen and provide individual feedback and clear explanation of concepts and techniques. They provide a safe and inviting classroom environment where you learn in a fun and enjoyable manner. In-depth learning opportunities with a good mix of theory and practical Using both practical and theoretical learning means that every type of learner will benefit, whether you are more hands on or learn better through listening to, and writing and reading what you are meant to. Using practical learning allows you to get hands on experience and learn the tools of the trade. It can allow you to feel confident and competent in the skills and techniques you will need when qualified to do your job effectively. Theory can help you understand why practicals are carried out in a certain way so that you can understand what you are doing yourself and explain to others. Theory on its own will not teach you all the skills you need, neither will practical. To master almost any field, you will need to do both. Guided Learning and Home Study To succeed in learning it is important that you spend time at home reading and digesting the theory as well as practising the techniques learnt in class. Our guided home study suggestions have been designed to steer you in the right direction, to keep your studying focussed and relevant. We never set homework for the sake of it. Each one is carefully designed to facilitate deeper learner and consolidation of relevant content. It enable us to offer continued support away from the classroom. Part-time weekend courses Very few people have the luxury of opting for full time courses. All our courses are part-time and our weekend courses are ideal for people with busy lives. Part-time weekday courses also available Ideal for therapists, shift workers, self-employed, part-timers and those not working Monday to Friday. Characters Stage School

Bradford On Avon

Characters was set up in November 2010 by Moira Townsend Williams to provide opportunities for children and young people to obtain a performance arts training with a creative ethos. Moira is a producer and writer living in Bradford on Avon, who has also been a professional actor, (trained at Guildford School of Acting) as well as a casting director and theatrical agent. Besides producing shows for Characters, she has produced 15 live shows of her own show The Casting Couch in London’s West End and a TV pilot for Channel 4, and various other film and theatre projects including the launch for Salisbury based Women’s Theatre JUNO. Characters employs teachers and directors who are also working in the industry so that the experience your child receives is always relevant and up-to-date. Current members of the team include Maria Finlay, who has many London acting credits, who teaches and directs our Saturday Stage School at The Arc as well as Little Characters, and Trinity Exam groups, Emma Tierney who teaches/directs our Bath Characters classes, and Megan Ashton who runs our Little Characters group. Past teachers and directors have included Leanne Copley, choreographer and performance arts teacher from St Brendan’s Sixth Form College who headed up the recent partnership with St Brendan's Performance Arts Academy, as well as Tillie Bolton who now runs her own Theatre School TSPA in Bristol. Our Stage Company, which devises new plays for performance, was in 2017 led by award-winning Bristol director Dave Lovatt and Musical Director Helen Temmink. Past workshops have been led by many well known industry professionals including Penelope Wildgoose, a Stroud based award-winning actor/director, David Bond, head of performance at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Sophie Jacobs-Wyburn, who now runs The egg youth theatre in Bath,David Lane, a leading Bristol based director and dramaturge, and Tom Wainwright, who was recently writer in residence at Bristol Old Vic. The vision of Characters is to provide a training that as closely as possible emulates a drama school training, adapted for the various age groups. This not only gives participants a solid foundation in techniques and skills, should they wish to pursue a career in performance arts later on in life, but also develops team building, confidence and self-esteem which are all key to a child’s personal development and happiness – whatever they do in life. Because we are not a franchise, we can keep our fees affordable, and we will always work with parents to swop skills for fees so that our classes are accessible to all.

Green Man Quilts

green man quilts

It had been strongly suggested at school that I didn’t continue with the sewing classes, after I cut my skirt along the fold line of the pattern, made a pigs ear of the french seams in the nightie and did who knows what damage to the domestic science apron (all we had to do was hem it and chain stitch our initials!). Those were the 3 projects for that year! Dismal! But I went home, told Auntie Mary about it and in a weekend she taught me more than I had learnt in the whole year. And inspired me to create things of beauty! I entered – and got first prize in the dressmaking competition at school the next year! My initial interest in quilts came from the Laura Ashley patchwork packs from the 1970s and 80s. Laura Ashley fed my passion for colour by selling me various bags of fabric – off-cuts, pre-cut hexagons – the lot, and with these I started my journey into quilt making. As a primary school teacher in the 80s I ran quilting clubs and worked with the children to create items for school fetes and the like. At this time I was a teacher member of the Quilters’ Guild and supported the Young Quilters team with a variety of workshops. I am no longer involved with Young Quilters though I have maintained my involvement with the Guild, serving as Festival of Quilts Officer from 2016 until 2021 and as a Trustee from 2021. I began to make quilts seriously in 1995 after I first attended a workshop taught by Judith Wilson in St Albans. Following this super introduction, I attended a number of courses taught by Judith over the next few years. I then successfully completed the City & Guilds Certificate in Craft and Design (Patchwork & Quilting) at Missenden Abbey taught by Barbara Weeks and, after a few years break, the City & Guilds Diploma in Craft and Design (Patchwork & Quilting) at Missenden Abbey taught by Janice Gunner. I have been influenced by the quilts exhibited at The American Museum, Bath and the V&A; and by many different quilters, a few of whom are referenced in my blog. My inspiration comes from the natural world, folk traditions, story and music and I am particularly drawn to Modern and Improv quilting. This adventure in craft and design, through quiltmaking, has led both directly and indirectly to some of the pieces on this website…. take a peek!

Gasworks

London

Established in 1994, Gasworks is a non-profit contemporary visual art organisation working at the intersection between UK and international practices and debates. We provide studios for London-based artists; commission emerging UK-based and international artists to present their first major exhibitions in the UK; and develop a highly-respected international residencies programme, which offers rare opportunities for international artists to research and develop new work in London. All programmes are accompanied by events and participatory workshops that engage audiences directly with artists and their work. Process and development are fundamental to us. We establish long-term relationships with artists and work with them to test out new ideas and establish dialogue with peers and the public. This level of support allows artists to confidently make a significant new step in their professional career, whether the outcome is a work-in-progress, an event or an exhibition. Over the last two and a half decades Gasworks has worked with over 500 artists from 80 countries around the world. Many of our alumni have gone on to exhibit at major institutions and art events, and have received nominations for - or won - prestigious awards including the Turner Prize, Absolut Award and Pinchuk Art Prize. Alumni include Yinka Shonibare, Goshka Macuga, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, The Otolith Group, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Tania Bruguera, Song Dong, Hassan Khan, Alexandre da Cunha, Renata Lucas, Cinthia Marcelle and many more. Gasworks has recently secured its future by purchasing and redeveloping its home. The £2.1million project has given the organisation unprecedented resilience and great confidence in continuing to support new generations of emerging UK and international artists. Gasworks is also the hub of the Triangle Network, an international network of over thirty arts organisations, mostly based in Africa, Asia and South America. Triangle Network regularly develops and facilitates artists’ residencies and workshops as well as peer-to-peer exchanges, both between the UK and the rest of the world or within a specific region. Triangle informs Gasworks’ programme, giving the organisation unparalleled opportunities to nurture and exhibit artists from across the world.
