At SlamFresh, we believe poetry can make a big difference to young people’s lives. But the need to create a nurturing and supportive environment in which to write has never been greater. Although the popularity of the art form, particularly spoken word, continues to grow on an unprecedented scale, last year, for the first time in our country’s history, poetry was nearly made an optional GCSE subject. As well as this, the recent closure of schools has meant that young people from lower economic backgrounds have been put at an even greater disadvantage than they already were. Cut off from schools, many of these young people simply have not had the space or resources to access creative opportunities, at a time when they need them more than ever. SlamFresh is a CIC based in the Newcastle upon Tyne which aims to address these problems. We run workshops that focus on the contemporary styles of spoken word and slam poetry, styles of writing which we have found can engage some of the most reluctant students. SlamFresh work in partnership with schools and community centres to mentor young people in writing, editing and performance. We have 3 company directors, Rowan McCabe, Michael MacDonald and Jeff Price. Rowan McCabe and Michael MacDonald (stage name Donald Jenkins) also serve as the two primary facilitators for the workshops, although guests may be brought in on a freelance basis where required. The directors met through their work as professional poets. Collectively, they have spent over 40 years working with children and young people.

Having personally grownup and lived the maktab/madrasah education experience in the 80’s and 90’s and started teaching in the late 90’s to the present day, coupled with fatherhood, I have had the opportunity to build a close understanding and interest in making sure our community can provide a learning experience to young Muslims that is relevant and relatable for the world they live in. This is despite the limitations we have in resourcing and time. In a time when our children are surrounded with competing ideologies and ways of living, and with maktab education being foundational to their lives as Muslims, it is critical that it hits home for them as independently thinking individuals. I would like to thank our wonderful teachers and parents over the years for their trust and belief in the vision that there was always a better way to educate our children. Teachers have worked tirelessly to develop the curriculum whilst simultaneously delivering it diligently. Keeping one eye on current student progress and an eye on the horizon. In this fast changing world we have constantly reflected on the effectiveness of our content and delivery in preparing for the future. Life is busy. So much to do and achieve. Days turn into weeks, time is always slipping away as we try to fit everything into an already overfilled schedule. We lack the space to befriend ourselves. To listen to what our body and heart really desires for us. This can leave us feeling tired, with headaches, anxious, unable to sleep, full of aches and pains, a sense of being unwell but unable to pinpoint what or why. My experience of this, left my body exhausted and my mind in a state of confusion. Eventually my body refused to play the game of life at the pace I demanded. I knew deep down something had to change. I returned to my practice of yoga, I studied the breath, its connection to our emotions and thoughts. I learnt how the body holds the secrets to our own happiness. I studied yoga nidra, different meditation and awareness practices, relaxation techniques and the power of visualisation. I watched how as we layer these practices into one long experience it has the power to shift entire groups of people from a sense of dis-ease into complete ease. This makes my heart sing, to take just an hour with a group of people and create a space to enable them to reconnect to their most authentic selves.
