Best In The FieldWhat does BASC stand for? BASC stands for the British Association for Shooting and Conservation. How did BASC begin? The organisation was founded as the Wildfowlers’ Association of Great Britain and Ireland (WAGBI) in 1908 by Stanley Duncan FZS and Sir Ralph Payne-Gallwey Bt. Why did Stanley Duncan form the Association? There were three main reasons why he set up WAGBI: He wanted to help professional wildfowlers. He was becoming alarmed at the increasing drainage and subsequent development of excellent wildfowl habitat. He realised that as time went by it would be necessary to defend the sport of wildfowling against the growing enthusiasm of extremists.

A Composers' Viewpoint CDP members are deeply involved in the current huge shifts in music-making. As an organisation we place the emphasis on sound transformation in creative musical contexts. Our aim is to provide new computer tools for sound design, in which the emphasis is on a detailed and flexible access to the inner features of sounds. Our goal is to help composers work with sounds. To this end, numerous programs are semi-algorithmic in nature, such as the segmentation routines and the Texture Set, which shape whole multi-event passages of music – 'semi-algorithmic' in this context means ways to adjust both individual parameters and multiple events over time.) In other words, CDP is not just focused on 'DSP' functions (digital signal processing), nor on sequencing or audio editing, and not at all with sound synthesis: other software handles these things nicely. CDP focuses on transforming existing sounds (musique concrète) and how they might be shaped over time to create anything from a single complex sound or gesture, to an extended soundscape or composition. In doing this, we mainly adopt the composer's viewpoint and seek to create a mutually supportive environment in which practising composers can help each other, both in designing software tools and in using them effectively. We believe in and depend on the crucial importance of the composer's ability to hear music not only before it is written, but even before the means to produce it are available.

Coombe is a small-scale rural centre, dedicated to growing creativity. It’s a place where you can develop new skills, supported by a beautiful environment, great food & people who actively enable the creative process. It’s also a place to make and show work, connect with nature and get inspired. We opened in 1983, it was one of the first small artist-led centres offering week-long creative courses. Since then, over the past 35 years, we are lucky to have developed an amazing network of people from all over the world. Our core activity is a mix of tutored art retreats that run year-round, bespoke projects for the creative community and showcasing new work on and off site. We celebrate difference, enjoy the messy ways of the creative process, celebrating the tricky bits, sharing in the successes and frustrations, encouraging others to explore and share the process of making.
