Kent

In 2001 the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) established their own College, ABDO College, as a centre of excellence raising the standards in optical education for the whole profession. ABDO College is based in Godmersham, Kent and specialises in distance and blended learning education for the optical profession. It is the only college in the UK devoted solely to the teaching of the theory and practical aspects of ophthalmic dispensing and its related specialist areas. Offering a range of courses through Access, Diploma, Degree, Advanced and Honours levels, ABDO College provides members of the Association with quality programmes leading to ABDO examinations. It gives members the opportunity to enhance their own knowledge and career progression and enables development for practice staff at many levels. At the College, devotion and care are coupled with extensive professional knowledge to equip students with the understanding and skills for their chosen progression. ABDO College has an impressive reputation for high standards and exemplary pass rates. Face-to-face tuition, led by eminent and appropriately qualified lecturers, takes place at the first class training facility in Kent. The College, which is the centrepiece of the Godmersham Park estate, lies within 1,000 acres of beautiful Kent countryside and benefits from stunning views across the North Downs. Situated between Ashford and Canterbury, it is accessible by rail, bus and car and provides an ideal venue for study and reflection away from the pressures and demands of everyday practice life. Distance learning coursework and supplementary material is provided by the dedicated courses team at ABDO College and helpful staff are always on hand to guide and support. The College also offers student accommodation for those visiting Godmersham for block release and day courses and the ABDO College Bookshop to fulfil all textbook requirements.

Cook Stars - Hull East and Holderness

I have 2 amazing children Noah and Phoebe who love to help me out in the kitchen and join in with classes and workshops whenever they can. My wonderful husband Andy shares my passion for cooking and enjoying good food. He has been a sweet chef in a Michelin star restaurant but these days he is kept busy preparing ingredients and washing the pots from the Cook Stars sessions. I come from a family of foodies and food lovers. My mum Marion, introduced me to cooking from a very early age when I would often "help her" in the kitchen. She even used to come into my junior school to volunteer to teach baking and ended up doing this for 25 years!! My brother was also inspired and now owns his own Michelin star restaurant! My degree is in Psychology and Sociology but I have always had an interest in learning about food, cooking and sharing my knowledge and skills. I worked in the hospitality industry as a waitress for many years from part time while going through my education to full time as restaurant supervisor and back to being a waitress while starting out in my teaching career. After graduating I moved to Romania for a short time doing charity work in Gypsy villages particularly working with the children within the communities and helping to feed the villagers by making soup twice a week with one of the heads of the village and distributing it to villagers in need. I worked in a local secondary school for 15 years first as a teaching assistant working in a variety of subjects with students with a variety of needs. I completed my training as a Food teacher in 2005, I have taught a variety of food courses in KS3 and KS4. I was head of the D&T faculty and also worked alongside some local primary schools on a variety of projects. On my return to work after having Phoebe I realised that I needed to look at different avenues to regain my work life balance. Cook stars is the perfect opportunity for me to do this. I can do what I truly love which is teaching Kids to cook and encouraging children to enjoy cooking and learning about nutrition.

Cambridge

Colours of Dance was established in Cambridge in 2010 by Imogen Knight, who initially offered ballet, tap and modern classes in Fulbourn and Great Wilbraham. Miss Imogen went on to settle the school into a 'home' of Cambridge Dance Studios in 2012. Joined now by nine other teachers, (see Teachers - Bios), Colours of Dance offers classes for all ages and abilities in Ballet, Tap, Streetdance, Modern & Contemporary, as well as Pilates (see Classes - By Type). We are very proud of our growing school, of the joy in the room at show time, of the results our students achieve in exams, and of our growing band of talented alumni who have gone onto vocational training at some of the foremost dance schools in the country. Colours of Dance has had to pause classes in Great Wilbraham during Covid, but hopefully we will return. However, we remain deeply committed to keeping up an outreach programme from the Studios, and as part of this, we work closely with several local schools, assisting with their own provision of dance classes & clubs, as well as running classes from their premises. The Cambridge Dance Studiostudio-1-rev.jpgs have proper dance floors and full-length mirrors, and provide a professional-standard dance environment for all our students - every week! Through the recruitment of and cooperation with other teaching and dance professionals, we have developed a busy and friendly dance community. footloose.jpg At Colours of Dance, we love teaching dance to all ages, from 2 through to adult. We believe that all dance classes should be taught safely by qualified, inspiring, dedicated and experienced professionals who work together as a team to nurture, support and develop all our students, so that our classes are appropriately challenging, fun and creative. We love working with students who come once a week equally as much as those who would like to come more often and perhaps work towards exams or a career in dance. Led by our Principal, we also nurture young or aspiring teachers, supporting and mentoring them while they undertake training to achieve national qualifications and teacher registration. If you have any queries or you don’t see a class suitable for you or your child, then please do get in touch anyway, as there may be something in the pipeline, or a suitable alternative.
