The length of any training course will depend on what type of machine is used,
the environment it is used in & the experience of the candidates on the training
course. 1-day refresher courses for experienced operators that haven’t had any
training for at least a 3-5-year period (this is the time period recommended by
the HSE to employers whereby staff need to be refresher trained, on all site
equipment). 3-5-day courses: for novices who have not received any formal
training and have no experience. All courses begin with theory sessions where
candidates learn the theoretical background knowledge of the respective machine
they are being trained on. This will include any relevant aspects of current UK
statutory legislation, there will be a mandatory theory assessment at some point
in the training. Practical training begins with an explanation as to the
operation of the relevant piece of MHE equipment. Practical elements cover daily
machine checks and safe operating techniques – candidates will then practice the
operation of the machine until you become proficient, whereby a practical
assessment will take place.
