WHAT WE DO The Sourdough School is a research institute for the study of the nutrition and digestibility of bread. The school is run by Vanessa Kimbell – baker, best-selling author, a regular contributor to the BBC4 Food Programme, researcher and teacher. It is at the Sourdough School that we research, develop and create sourdough bread – but it is more than just bread, and it’s more than just a school. Over the last few years, the gut microbiome and its role in supporting digestion and our mental and physical health has been one of our main areas of research. HOW WE TEACH YOU TO MAKE SOURDOUGH The Sourdough Club is where we teach you how to make our amazing bread. It is the part of The Sourdough School where we share our recipes, tutorials, tips, lessons and support you so that you can learn how to make Sourdough where ever you are. WHY ARE WE DIFFERENT? Here at the school Vanessa and the team have taken the most up to date scientific findings and applied them to sourdough and other fermented foods, working towards our mission to scientifically prove that sourdough and gut-friendly nutritious food can have a positive impact on our physical and mental health. THE SCHOOL: The Sourdough School is more than a cookery school. It’s about sharing incredible scientific knowledge about the connection of bread and our gut microbiome. It’s supported by a network of medical professionals, scientists, wheat breeders, nutritionists, specialist bakers, researchers, academics and we’ve been pooling the research on sourdough & fermentation from all over the world into a central point. We develop recipes, techniques and formula’s as our aim is not just to study, but conduct our own research on formula’s & grains and fermentation and to share what we find. It’s about applying evidence and the practical application of fermenting and baking into delicious, affordable nutritious bread recipes to bake, to eat and to enjoy. The Sourdough School has featured in the 3 BEST courses in the UK in the Sunday Times and in The Telegraph top ten baking courses in the UK, as well being included in the London Evening Standard top course in the UK. Each year the Sourdough School has: Research and development workshops working on different themed areas from bread and guts, sourdough for non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, IBS, blood sugar management, sports and mental health. An annual week-long diploma focusing on in-depth analysis on bread and guts. Research study groups with renowned neuroscientists, wheat breeders, microbiologists, scientists and medical professionals. Her own research development kitchen applying the scientific findings about bread and fermented foods to create new bread formulas and recipes. A clinical study as part of her PhD working with De Montford University and baking innovation group Puratos. The school also has an online offering called the Sourdough Club where people can learn how to make sourdough online via in-depth video masterclasses hosted by Vanessa. Until easter this year our we held RCGP accredited for our nutrition and digestion of bread diploma. We decided not to renew our subscription to allow for longer courses that included more baking.

When month after month, my account moved between positive and negative, because of choices that I had made to buy things that were not so important, I honestly felt like this was all that my financial life was going to look like. I didn’t know that this was the feeling that would be the pivot to my financial expertise and the birth of my company ‘Young Spender’. A company delivering coaching, and workshops designed to develop the financial education of young people. A choice was made to break the cycle. Within 4 months I had managed to clear a debt that had felt so overwhelming, and I had taught myself the habits and strategies needed to manage my money effectively. I stopped getting that wobbly feeling at the end of the month and there were no longer any minus signs in front of my cash. With my success at demolishing this debt following the strategies I had learnt, alongside the knowledge that I was gaining from my career in Finance and Accounting, I realised that more had to be done to support and educate young people like myself to stop making poor financial choices. North London Beekeepers (NLB) is the home of beekeeping for many beekeepers in Camden, Islington, Hackney, Haringey, and Westminster, parts of Brent and south Barnet.  Our long history of promoting beekeeping goes back to the 1930s and at present we have approximately 110 members. The NLB teaching apiary is close to Kenwood House and Highgate Village, with additional recently opened apiaries at Alexandra Palace and Highgate.  North London Beekeepers is one of the 75 local associations of the British Beekeeping Associations (BBKA) that serve local communities with support and education. We are affiliated to the Middlesex Federation of Beekeepers’ Associations, which represents our members at area and national levels on the BBKA (www.bbka.org.uk). North London Beekeepers aims to promote apiculture and educate people about beekeeping by holding classes, lectures, practical workshops and discussions as well as participating in local festivals showing live bees and selling honey. We provide advice and assistance in numerous ways to beekeeping members of NLB, welcoming beginners, novices and experienced beekeepers to our ‘beekeeping club’.

Independent Dance (ID) supports the development of dance through radical enquiry, learning, community-building and audience engagement. Based at Siobhan Davies Studios in London, ID is a research engine and ‘home’ organisation for a growing community of practitioners in the UK and around the world. It has been artist and female-led since 1984. Our public programme supports a wide range of accessible and interdisciplinary approaches to dance, somatics, improvisation and choreography. Co-designed with UK/ international artists and partner organisations, this far-reaching programme includes classes, talks, workshops, research, digital initiatives and festivals. ID also bridges higher education and professional spheres, leading on MA/MFA Creative Practice: Dance Professional in partnership with Trinity Laban and Siobhan Davies Studios. Our aim is to generate a diverse and dynamic ‘community of practice’ which is not limited to one place or location and to agitate for positive change and justice within ID, the arts and society. Independent Dance is proud to be part of an ongoing National Portfolio Organisation consortium led by Siobhan Davies Studios, supported using public funding by Arts Council England. Films Without Borders (FWB) is a non-political UK registered charity that provides hands-on educational filmmaking workshops for youth between the ages of 15 – 19, living in challenging countries around the globe. FWB’s intention is to break down barriers, build bridges, and create a dialogue whilst simultaneously teaching youth the first stages of film production.. Since our launch in 2010 we have run more than 20 successful workshops in countries which include Israel, Rwanda, South Africa, Palestine, and most recently in aboriginal communities in Australia, enabling us to access over 300 young people living at risk. Our FWB participants subsequently made a series of high quality short films, which have been screened at prestigious international film festivals, including the Cannes International Film Festival. We are delighted that our films were screened during royal visits in Australia and South Africa, where they were shown in the presence of President Zuma and the Earl and Countess of Wessex. The films have also been shown on various networks around the world. In 2013 FWB won the Brit Week Innovation in Philanthropy Award in Los Angeles. In 2014 FWB arranged paid work experience at the Jerusalem Cinemathèque/Film Festival for a Palestinian FWB participant. She continues to work for the organization on a paid freelance basis. In 2015 we are delighted to announce that Lionsgate UK has supported three internships, one with a casting director and two on a major feature film. The interns are from Israel, Rwanda and a South African township. This has resulted in the Israeli intern working on a paid freelance basis for the casting director. The South African intern has been moved out of the township and placed into a job created by S-ABC in South Africa. This has all been initiated and financially supported by FWB. We are currently looking at supporting a Masters in film for the Rwandan participant. We share an independent partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, whereby we incorporate award participants into FWB’s global workshops. Our other major partners include Swarovski, Lionsgate UK, Swiss International Airlines, Twickenham Studios, Deluxe Post Production/Encore, The Editpool. After graduating with a BA(Hons) Fine Art at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, London in 1988, I returned home to Northumberland to work as a photographic artist and silversmith. In 1994 I trained to teach whilst continuing on my own creative journey. I started experimenting with the many processes in the making of felt in 2005. I fell in love with its versatility, being able to paint with a varied palette of dyed wools, create something delicate and ephemeral using fine wools and silks, or use more sculptural techniques to form vessels. In 2008 I was introduced to the many varieties of coloured willows grown locally for basketry and the traditional techniques used to work with them. It excited me and I started using these to create vessels and sculptural forms. In 2011 I set up Biteabout Arts with the intention of creating unique items for sale and delivering a variety of art and craft workshops. We have been renovating the buildings at our smallholding to provide a working environment and somewhere to deliver workshops. Biteabout Farm is a North Northumbrian smallholding consisting of over 7 acres of permanent pasture. It was formally known as Coalshank (sited near to Biteabout Colliery) and also The Red Lion Inn ...'a troublesome little pub' until the 1940s. Badly neglected in more recent years, we took it on in 2002 and started its transformation. With far more work needed than initially anticipated, renovation is still ongoing, but nearing completion. I am now working in my studio and have a program of workshops on offer here. Sculptures are made to commission. Drawing on their creative expertise of materials, processes, 3D form and design, a working partnership between Anna Turnbull and Richard Charters. Working together, they explore the creative possibilities of your idea. The creative process takes time. It starts with collaboration through drawing, discussion and exploration of materials. An animated armature is created in mild steel by Richard, the bones. Anna weaves the flesh, emphasising its muscles and flow, its movement. It is the dialogue between them that brings the creations to life. Each sculpture is unique due to its individually made metal armature and the natural material of willow. Past pieces can be recreated, but each will have its own stance, character, life.
