I would like to warmly welcome you to Oxford Media & Business School and I hope this brief tour will encourage you to visit us and learn more about our students and what we offer. The atmosphere here at OMBS is warm and supportive with students who enjoy a balance between the intensity of the three term Professional Business Diploma course and the university student lifestyle in the city. Our ambitions for our students are wide-ranging. As well as acquiring the all-important technical skills we also know that soft skills are equally important. Each year we look forward to seeing our students graduate at the end of the course confident and inspired for their future. I look forward to meeting you and sharing further my pride in leading this outstanding college. Many colleges, most notably those at university level, deliver training principally through large lectures, often with as many as 200 students at a time. Whilst this presents few disadvantages to more experienced students who want to study an academic subject in depth, many students would benefit from a greater level of individual attention in a smaller class environment learning practical hands-on-skills essential for effective job performance. OMBS offers a unique combination of excellent facilities, small class sizes, personal tutors and a relaxed friendly environment. As a small college we know every student individually and see them grow throughout their time here reaching levels of expertise they never thought they would achieve. We support them through their academic work as well as their personal experiences. What we provide our students here at OMBS is the chance to gain the advanced skills they need to tackle that first step of their career. They leave here feeling confident and capable about their future. A large number of our students come to OMBS because they have heard about what it is like being a student here at college and in Oxford; because one of their family has been before; or because their school has reassured them that this is the right place and the right course for them. We are lucky to be located in the very heart of Oxford, in St Aldate’s, opposite the beautiful Christ Church Meadow, surrounded by beautiful buildings and historic colleges of the University. This is a wonderful opportunity to study in Oxford for a year.

The Adab Trust was set up in 2007 to facilitate improved employment outcomes for students from challenging backgrounds. Since inception, the Trust has worked with six universities and supported over 7,000 undergraduates and recent graduates. Our inaugural programme was the 'Leadership by Example Programme'. This involved high calibre graduates from ethnic minority backgrounds - particularly from modern universities – being put through a six stage employer-led training and selection programme. The selection programme was delivered by one of UK's leading executive search agencies - Odgers & Berndtson – alongside the market leader in psychometric testing - SHL group. Successful candidates were then marketed to employers and in our first year of operation, 45 candidates secured graduate level roles. From delivering our inaugural programme, we discovered that the principal barrier to most graduates being able to secure their desired jobs; was that they often lacked the soft skills employers sought. To address this, we developed our current programme - the very successful 'Employers in Higher Education (EHE) Programme'. The Employers in Higher Education (EHE) Programme: This programme aims to create a strong connection between education and employers. This is done by bringing employers onto campuses to deliver a range of creative and innovative training sessions to young people. ICPD was designed and launched by City of London senior business professionals. The team of experts are extremely passionate about City of London educational services, communication and professionalism. They are a group of Senior Principle Directors with over 150 years of successful business experience between them with detailed experience in the banking, Information Technology, Communications, Professional Level Education and Psychology industries. All our Principle Directors are fully accredited, certified and qualified professional business people. The group are all English who have experienced a variety of cultures through taking long term assignments by living and working in all corners of the Globe, Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East and the Americas. The concept for ICPD came through various detailed discussions with City of London affiliated further education establishments. In today’s world of technology and artificial intelligence, ICPD identified a growing need to take young people back to basic human interactions. Basic human skills have been ignored over many years and for future generations, it is essential that young people starting off need to adopt these “soft skills”. Firstly, to pass the selection and interview process and to enhance their chances with their career development. ICPD (Interview, Communication, Personal Development) developed a programme working alongside the universities. ICPD is fully committed in promoting the “City of London” as the preferred centre of choice for training in helping students make that jump from education to the workplace.

The local context (a small industrial town in rural northern Cumbria) is, perhaps, not one you might associate with academic excellence and yet we were the first secondary school in the county to have been judged “outstanding” by Ofsted under their revised framework. You will probably want to see for yourself what we have to offer and, to this end, I would be delighted to show you around. Emotional Intelligence – Plus (EQ+) I have always been a firm believer in the promotion of so-called ‘soft skills’, in Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and in improving the ability of pupils to interact effectively with others in different contexts. Many pupils suffer when they find themselves in a different social context (e.g. a discussion with an adult, a classroom presentation etc.) and find it hard to adapt. So, a few years ago, as part of the School Development Plan, we promoted this across the school through normal lessons and Form Periods to help pupils recognise its importance, and encouraged pupil progress in eight key areas, using where possible pupil role-models as teachers. These days, we regularly revisit EQ, albeit informally, encouraging pupils to be ‘EQ-competent’ and ‘interview ready’. And more recently, we have also embarked on a related project with an external company keen to promote Oracy Skills. Initially, we focussed on the whole of Year 8; latterly, we have adapted the programme to target around 100 pupils (from Year 7 to Year 12) who we believe might benefit more than others from this kind of intervention.
