Our Worship Our place in the Methodist family The Methodist Church in Scotland is part of the Methodist Church in Britain and the worldwide Methodist Movement -see the World Methodist Council. History The first Methodist societies were formed in the 18th Century by those who heard John Wesley and his preachers. John Wesley and his preachers were itinerant; they travelled almost incessantly. John Wesley believed that no preacher should stay with a society for more than 6-8 weeks; after that the people would no longer be attracted by the preaching. Methodist Structures Local churches are grouped into Circuits, within which preachers, deacons and presbyters are shared. The Circuit Meeting is chaired by the Superintendent Minister of the Circuit. There are 7 Circuits in the Scotland District, which covers all of Scotland, apart from Shetland. Representatives from all the Circuits attend the Scottish Synod, over which the Chair of the District presides. The Scotland District sends representatives to the Conference of the Methodist Church in Britain, over which the President of the Conference presides. Ecumenical Relations The Methodist Church in Scotland belongs to the EMU partnership between the Scottish Episcopal, Methodist and United Reformed Churches in Scotland. It is one of nine member churches of ACTS – Action of Churches Together in Scotland. Local Methodist churches have many connections with other denominations; in some places, they belong to Local Ecumenical Partnerships or United Churches. What is Distinctive about Methodism?

Sir John Dunford During his 50-year career in education, John Dunford has held a wide range of roles. These were outlined in the introduction to his book, ‘The School Leadership Journey’, published in November 2016 by John Catt. http://www.johncattbookshop.com/the-school-leadership-journey John was general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (formerly the Secondary Heads Association) from 1998 to 2010. Prior to that, he was a member of the leadership team of three secondary schools in the north-east of England from 1974 to 1998, including 16 years as head of Durham Johnston Comprehensive School, an 11-18 school with 1500 pupils. John was a member of the Councils of Durham and Nottingham Universities for 11 and 6 years respectively and was a member of the Local Government Association’s Commission on the Organisation of the School Year. He was chair of Whole Education from 2010 to 2019, the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors from 2011 to 2014 and of the charity Step Together Volunteering from 2010 to 2018. He served on the board of trustees of Teach First and the advisory board of Future Leaders from the inception of those organisations and was a member of the governing council of the National College for School Leadership. John was the government’s National Pupil Premium Champion from 2013 to 2015, an independent role in which he worked with schools, trusts, teaching schools and local authorities on the effective use of the pupil premium to raise the educational achievement of disadvantaged pupils, reporting back to the Department for Education on issues raised by school leaders and teachers. John is a trustee of the Learn Academies Trust in south Leicestershire.

Amplify is a training and development consultancy led by Tom Burke. Founded in 2003, amplify provides services primarily to the voluntary sector with a focus on children and youth issues both in the UK and in the Global South. Tom has an extensive history of personal, professional and voluntary work with children and young people and the wider voluntary sector. From a child involved in youth work and global child rights advocacy, he developed skills and experience as a practitioner and advocate. He can bring this mix of experiences into work as a trainer, writer and consultant. Most recently, Tom was Deputy Chief Executive at Y Care International, the international development agency of the YMCA movement. He led their International Citizen Service youth volunteering programme, safeguarding & security, global youth work, policy & advocacy and financial management. Working part-time this was balanced with a range of freelance projects. Previously, Tom grew up in the youth and child rights movement. As a young activist, he was a member of the steering group of the Child Rights Caucus at the UN Special Session on Children and director of social enterprise ‘Young People Change the World’. He was engaged in local youth participation initiatives creating platforms for young people to be heard or to access services, including in sexual health and children in care. Tom was Chair of Trustees of youth-focussed international development charity Peace Child International. He was previously Senior Policy and Change Officer at the Children’s Rights Alliance for England, where he specialised in children’s participation rights, undertaking policy analysis, Parliamentary lobbying and campaigning for change. Over the past 15 years, he has undertaken consultancy for a range of clients on projects ranging from safeguarding, inclusion, evaluation and research projects, training and direct delivery.

I am incredibly grateful to my fellow governors for voluntarily devoting so much of their time and effort to the school community. Our governing body comprises elected representatives from the local authority, staff, parents and members of the community and the combined experience, skills and knowledge is vast. The job description for governors is clear, set the strategic direction of the school, hold school leaders to account for improvement and ensuring that the school budget is spent appropriately. As such, much of our time is spent working with Mrs Johnson and the senior leadership team to continually review and refine the quality of our provision through our subcommittee meetings. Muir Gray is the Founding Director of OAP Ltd, with the following business streams: OVSP, CASP, & Living Longer Better. He has advised Public Health England and the Chair of the NHS Health and Social Care Digital service. Muir’s work focuses on providing training to healthcare professionals on value based healthcare. Sir Muir has worked for the National Health Service in England since 1972, occupying a variety of senior positions during that time, including serving as the Director of Research and Development for Anglia and Oxford Regional Health Authority, and first establishing and then being the Director of the UK National Screening Committee. He founded the National Library for Health, and was the Director of Clinical Knowledge, Process, and Safety for the NHS (England) National Programme for IT, serving as the Director of the National Knowledge Service. He was the first person to hold the post of Chief Knowledge Officer of the NHS (England), also serving as the co-Director of the Department of Health’s Quality Innovation Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) Right Care Programme. Together with Sir Iain Chalmers, Muir was instrumental in establishing the Cochrane Collaboration. Sir Muir is an internationally renowned authority on healthcare systems and has advised governments of several countries outside the UK including Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and Germany and regularly delivers plenary sessions at international events, the most recent being the 2014 World Health Summit in Berlin, the Big Data in Pharma conference in London in 2015 and the 2015 Transplantation meeting at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Sir Muir is also a Professor in the Nuffield Department of Surgery at the University of Oxford. He received the CBE in 2000 and was knighted in 2005 for services to the National Health Service.

Hands On Pottery is a small ceramics school based near the centre of Nottingham. The building is light and airy offering Wheelchair access to all three work studios. We have been working with people since 1990 and we encourage everyone to reach their own individual aims and objectives. Confidence is enhanced by our high standards of teaching and working in a comfortable friendly environment. The pottery is all wheel chair friendly with adjustable tables and a loop fitted in the main workshop. As the pottery is all on the ground floor it is easily accessible for all. When working at the pottery you will be encouraged to work individually, on your own chosen designs, which will be finished to a very high standard. The teachers working at the pottery are proud of our reputation, as many students have discovered their creative ability with us through the art of clay. Many students who have never worked with clay before have gained qualifications or found a new creative skill they enjoy. We believe that clay is a wonderful medium to work with and that clay brings out the best in people. The most satisfactory way we can describe our findings is: "It's not what people do to clay, it's what clay does to people" Hands On Pottery offers classes to everybody. We are prepared for you to come to us at the pottery, or for us to come to you in a place of your choice. You can also decide the length of time you would like the class to run for, how many people will be in the group and starting and finishing times. Our work: Schools where we offer Classes to learn the skill of pottery and also to help obtain certain art based Qualifications within the school. We work with people with physical and learning disabilities in schools, centres, nursing homes or at the pottery. Nursery schools and play groups. Hospitals Fun days, play days, festervals and open days. Scout and guide groups and individuals working towards their badges. Birthday parties for children are very popular and can be either paint a pot or making and painting your own work. Parties for adults are also recommended for birthdays, stag and hen groups and other celebrations that you may like something to remember. Corporate events – we work with different companies on team building sessions, which are customised for your group’s individual requirements. We work with young people who are unable to attend school, with children and young people who are being home schooled and with children and young people from different cultural backgrounds. Our Workshops Our workshops are equipped with specialist tools, equipment and materials. We also have a variety of different wheels for throwing, kilns, a choice of different clays and lots of glazes to choose from. We fire our kilns to earthenware and stoneware temperatures, which is useful for both decorative and functional wares. The Teachers The teachers are all practising potters, ceramisists or artists who have professional teaching qualifications. We all offer one to one support to enable everyone to benefit as much as possible during the time you spend with us. Cathy has 24 years experience as a therapist and is a registered MBACP Senior Accredited Counsellor and Supervisor with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy adhering to the BACP Code of Ethics. Cathy values working therapeutically with both clients and supervisees and enjoys the unique learning process that therapy provides. Cathy has a particular interest in the traumatic impact of domestic and sexual abuse. Cathy is Chair of Trustees for the charity Compassion – addressing domestic abuse and providing long term support to victims and families. For many years Cathy sat on the DV Hate Crime Scrutiny Panel addressing domestic abuse prosecutions for the Suffolk Crown Prosecution Service and continues to provide consultancy for organisations. Cathy is enthusiastic and passionate about her work in the arena of domestic abuse, but when not working Cathy enjoys time with her family, walking, gardening, travel and catching up with friends.
