Communicators Training Associates Limited is an independent training provider based in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham with training facilities on site. We also deliver at outreach centres in Spennymoor, Crook and Darlington. In addition to the programmes we support, we provide ‘drop in’ sessions and host ‘information days’ at all our locations and more recently have launched our ‘virtual learning platform’ to enable everyone to learn from home. We have built an excellent reputation for giving a quality support offer to those who come to our sessions using a mix of classroom based activities on both a one-to-one and group-based setting, coupled with high quality online learning to help learners gain qualifications improving their life chances through gaining personal skills, moving to further learning, taking up volunteering opportunities and securing employment. Our employed learners tell us that the skills they learn during their time with us helps them progress in their job role. With flexibility in mind Communicators hosts a virtual learning platform providing e-learning to those individuals who want to study from home or their workplace. The Company was set up by our Managing Director Isobel Currie in 1999, and the following year we secured a contract for supported online learning with Ufi/learndirect. Initially set up to accommodate ICT training needs for companies across the North East, we rapidly widened the scope and range of our programmes to include NVQs in Management, Advice and Guidance, Administration, Customer Service, and Cleaning,; at the same time we introduced accredited programmes in Maths, English, Work Skills, Personal and Social Skills and Customer Service. Over the last 18 months we have further expanded the offer to include CSCS (for construction) and a suite of Community Learning Programmes called ‘My Future Matters’ which have been devised to support those who are furthest away from employment to find appropriate and sustainable work. Isobel maintained a continuous relationship with learndirect up until July 2017, becoming one of the longest serving members of the then network and securing several major, national quality and performance achievement awards on a regular basis including ‘Learner Support Staff’; Working with Employers’, Moving Learners into Work’ and overall ‘Best Delivery Centre. An enduring theme throughout this time has been the support given to the local community, DWP and Job Centres, various local charities, many, many employers and Her Majesty’s Prison Service in Durham. Since the closure of learndirect, Communicators has gone on to secure new contracts to support the continuation of the service with System Group, Durham County Council and most recently was awarded a Prime Contract with Tees Valley Combined Authority. Isobel believes that the success of Communicators is based on the dedicated team of Tutors and Administrators who are trained to a high standard to support our learning provision. A high proportion started their journey with Communicators as volunteers, some are former learners and all have gone on to become very valued members of a thriving team. Everyone in the Team put our learners at the heart of the operation with the genuine and embedded aim to help every learner achieve their full potential - whether they are employed or unemployed. We believe that by living and breathing our Values, each and everyone of us look to make our Vision a reality. We have successfully retained the Matrix accreditation validating the quality of our Information, Advice and Guidance services since inception. During our recent re-assessment, learners interviewed commented on the willingness of staff to provide encouragement and support tailored to them as individuals. This support was felt to be delivered by approachable, non-judgmental staff who are committed to ensuring learners achieve their goals. The weekly Assessment Days and IAG provided throughout a stay with Communicators ensures they are very clear about their learning pathway and options. There were also numerous examples provided about the difference the support had made to them, particularly helping to overcome mental health problems and lack of confidence and self-esteem. Learners interviewed were very clear about what they could expect from Communicators, and were very complimentary about our company. Many of them shared their own stories of how we had made an impact on their lives, with some saying: ‘I don’t think I would still be around if I hadn’t come to Communicators.’ ‘They really do sit and listen to you’. ‘They spend lots of time getting to know you, it’s a relaxed atmosphere and I don’t want to go home at the end’. ‘You spend a lot of time talking about your goals and aspirations, they are always positive’ ‘They make you aware of the choices and guide you, I was adamant I wanted to do IT but when we sat and talked about Maths and English, I realised it would be easier if I got those qualifications first.’ ‘I can’t believe how far I’ve come in a short period of time.’ ‘I’ve got dyslexia and they have helped me understand what it is and how it affects me, I’m getting lots of support.’ ‘Lots of encouragement, you are accepted for who you are, made to feel straight away part of the group.’ ‘Whenever I’ve not understood or struggled, the tutors have been there to guide me through, without them I wouldn’t have progressed as well.’

I guess I’m just a “singing nerd” at the end of the day! I love singing, I love listening to other people sing and I love it when people start to truly express themselves through their singing voices with power, presence and confidence. I’ve been singing all my life. I started out singing in a very good, local High Anglican church choir at the age of 7 that exposed me to harmony and counterpoint, Requiems and Latin - all whilst wearing robes and a frilly ruff! I managed to obtain my Bishops’ Chorister Award just before my voice broke, before moving to the Alto and then finally the Tenor sections of the choir. At this stage my ear was drifting away from classical choral singing and more towards Soul, RnB and Gospel (thanks Whoopi Goldberg and Sister Act!) As a Gospel Singer, I sang with the Liverpool Love & Joy Gospel Choir for many years, touring all over the country from small town halls to football stadia - I had truly fallen in love with this very expressive and emotive art form, and eventually set up Sanctified Gospel Choir who went on to win a Gospel Entertainment & Music (GEM) Award in 2005. I managed to gain a place to study music at the prestigious Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) which was set up by former-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, and graduated with honours in 2003. During my time studying at LIPA, I had the opportunity to sing and perform with a vast array of talented artists and performers and fell into providing backing vocals for a number of different main-stream artists of the time. Having discovered over time that I really enjoyed singing backing vocals, was happier with my back to an audience directing as opposed to standing in the spotlight, it was no surprise to me that I ended up gravitating towards teaching singing as a side hustle. And that’s what it was, a side hustle, I had no clue what I was doing and that’s when I fortunately discovered the Speech Level Singing methodology or SLS. Upon completion of my initial SLS training, I was then also invited to Lecture in Vocals at LIPA and taught there for 12 years in total, teaching one-to-one and group singing classes to the students on the Music, Acting and Dance degree and foundation level courses. After achieving Level 3 status within the SLS organisation, I wanted to broaden out my knowledge of vocal pedagogy, vocal harmonics and acoustics, and along with a number of other teachers from around the world came together under the guidance of Dave Stroud to form what is now known as Vocology in Practice or ViP. Shortly after helping to found ViP, where I served as Education Director for a year, I obtained my MA in Music from the University of Salford, where I focussed my studies on the Psychology of Performance and the condition, "Adophobia" (literally the Fear of Singing), on which I wrote extensively for my thesis. I work hard to keep myself informed on the latest pedagogical research and developments within in the world of vocal health and how to teach to ensure that I can provide the very best for my clients. I’ve also recently started training in Laryngeal Massage so that I can bring this highly beneficial manual therapy to the my clients. Highlights of my career to date include being a Lecturer in Singing at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and helping to establish and teach on the singing program on the BA(hons) in Musical Theatre at the Institute of the Arts Barcelona. I have also been fortunate to train voices at Rare Studios in Liverpool. I arranged and directed the backing choir on the 2012 UK Christmas No.1 song "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" on behalf of the Justice Collective, for which I was awarded a Gold Disc. Aside from my teaching studio, I am the choral director for the Liverpool Community Choir, training the lead voices for the Birkenhead Operatic Society and have recently started training voices for the Pro Vocal Artist artist development program. Over the last ten years or so, my career has taken me down the path of teacher training and I am fortunate to train teachers for two organisations; BAST (Be A Singing Teacher), where I am one of only 5 teacher trainers in the world, and MVT (Modern Vocal Training), the latter of which I serve as an Educational Director. I absolutely love training new teachers; I find it to be really invigorating, plus it keeps me accountable and makes sure that I’m keeping abreast of the latest developments in my field.

About Us The Scottish Universities’ International Summer School (SUISS) offers an intense, challenging and diverse programme of study that takes place annually during the months of July and August in Edinburgh, the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. We offer three courses in Text and Context: British and Irish Literature from 1900 to the Present, one course in Creative Writing, and one course in Contemporary British and Irish Theatre and Performance. Our literature courses offer extensive examination of Modernism, Contemporary Literature and Scottish Literature, while our Creative Writing course allows students to develop their personal writing portfolios. The Theatre and Performance course, which explores both theoretical and performative approaches to drama, coincides with the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and is delivered in partnership with the Scottish Playwrights’ Studio. We are located at the University of Edinburgh, and run by a team of hard-working individuals, led by the Administrator and Co-Directors. This core team, along with our advisory committee, oversees the lecture programme and management of the summer school each year. In the summer, we employ volunteer student hosts, who are SUISS graduates themselves. They are on hand to address the needs and concerns of our visiting students. Our very talented tutors, who are usually in the process of completing a PhD in a literature related field, instruct the seminars. Around 4 million people visit Edinburgh every year, many of them for the Edinburgh International Book Festival in August – the largest public celebration of the written word in the world – but many to explore the literary city and all it has to offer the book lover. Edinburgh is an acclaimed centre of learning. The National Library of Scotland (NLS) is a copyright library, and holds a copy of every book published in the United Kingdom. One of the largest and finest collections in the British Isles, the NLS provides outstanding facilities for research in all fields. The resources of the NLS are complimented by The University of Edinburgh Library, the extensive collections of which are designed to meet the needs of both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

This project is the vessel through which I teach about the brain mechanisms of dance in a fun, engaging manner so that everyone can access and get the maximum benefits from dancing. Oftentimes, the focus in dance science and dance education is turned to the body, leaving behind it's connection to the mind and brain. Understanding the brain mechanisms in dance can improve performance, make classes more inclusive, prevent injury and optimize both learning and teaching. In the workshops I provide the theory in a dynamic fashion, always applying it to practice promoting embodied cognition and equipping dancers with easy-to-apply techniques. In a fast-paced world where we are often disconnected from ourselves, my focus is to use the body as a tool of learning and give the what and the how in a practical and interesting way. Part of the workshops is dedicated to initiating conversation and exchange insights. Experiencing and sharing experiences leads to greater knowledge that includes subjective and objective aspects of knowing. My approach is based on scientific evidence-based knowledge, my background in dance (performing, teaching), coaching, and mental health experience. By being embedded in academia and being an active student, I keep up-to-date with the most recent information in a constantly changing neuroscientific field. From this project, I have developed my own evidence-based method called Dance Integrated Healing which enhances all the healing properties of dance. Hi there - I'm Paul Green, the founder of The Business Community. I've been an independent business owner since 2003 and love working with small businesses; in particular family-run businesses. I'd like to share a little story about the reason for this and what my "why" is. What drives me My father ran his own small business designing, manufacturing and supplying electrical control panels to various companies within the UK and overseas. At the age of 11, unfortunately, the business went bust - as happens to quite a few businesses. This meant having to move house, move schools - money was tight and the atmosphere was not that great in the household. Having gone through this experience, it obviously left an impression. A few years ago, I attended a workshop (run by Jacky Sherman) looking at why a person is in business and exploring the type of businesses that I enjoyed working with. In this session, the seed that was subconsciously planted many years before emerged. It became apparent that what was driving me in my endeavours to support small, family-run businesses, is that I didn't want any children associated with the business owners to go through the trauma of a failed business! This is why I strive to impact the performance of the businesses I work with; having them be better at what they do - focusing on profitability and cashflow within the business. My journey My experience and knowledge of 20 years being employed by someone else and to date, working with 100s of business owners, gives me the confidence and ability to offer business advice, coaching and training when given the opportunity to do so. Having experienced the trials and tribulations that face a small business on that entrepreneurial journey, I am passionate about making sure businesses don't make the same mistakes that I made en route! I am a big believer in collaboration and encourage businesses to work together to grow their businesses; as well as offering help and support to each other for mutual gain. In 2020, my story culminated in the creation of The Business Community. This brings together my principles of businesses working together. We invite movement teachers to deepen their practice with us, with weekly classes or one-off workshops. Bodywise is a Pilates teacher-training centre, running in-depth Matwork and Equipment teacher-training courses (accredited by the Pilates Foundation, the highest standard in Pilates training). All teachers at Bodywise are Pilates Foundation trained and highly creative - each with their own unique approach. The Pilates Foundation requires its members to maintain up-to-date insurance and first aid certification. PF Teachers must also commit to ongoing learning, training and practice through Continual Professional Development courses (CPD) each year. We also have a small shop on the premises selling various Pilates equipment such as mats, softballs, therabands, foam rollers, yoga blocks, spiky massage balls, non-slip socks and some clothing / books.
