Giving is part of the fabric of our community at TSP and what makes our school so special. Our staff give their time and expertise to create a memorable education for our children, and the children give so much energy and enthusiasm to their work. We would also like to invite members of the wider TSP community to give time, talent or treasure, however they can, in support of our school to make a direct difference to our children’s lives. Recent projects that have been supported / funded include: · Contributing to the refurbishment of the Hall through purchasing a new projector and speakers · Improving year 3 and 4 classrooms · Sourcing new ICT equipment · Extra workshops to further enhance the school’s curriculum The school’s current focus is on: · enhancing the Year 1 playground area. This small, contained area is very tired and in need of some improvements to create a stimulating, engaging space for play. Your contributions will make a difference every day for the children who pass through year 1 each year. · improving the Key Stage 1 playground which is a thoroughfare for the school and is also used as the play area for Clubhouse, our wrap around care service. · Following the refurbishment of the school hall which has improved central space for the children to use throughout the day, to now also upgrade the sound and lighting equipment which would further enhance our school performances and workshops. We aim to raise a minimum of £5,000 each academic year to support projects such as these – the more we can raise, the sooner our children can benefit. We know that giving money isn’t always possible, so here’s what you can do, whatever your circumstances:

Conwy,

We have been using lime in North Wales for twenty years now, so we know our stuff! We have a lifelong interest in vernacular architecture, a concern for our environment and years of experience working on conservation and building restoration projects. In 2011 we moved to Plas Tirion and set up our training and resource centre, for the repair of historic buildings. We believe that everyone can learn the skills required to carry out authentic and lasting repairs to their historic structures, which respect the tradition, aesthetics and fabric of the original architecture. These include the practical techniques needed, as well as a foundation knowledge of the right materials and how to source them. Most of all, our ethos is all about a sustianable future for traditional building, whether thats keeping valuable skills alive or using local materials that are readily available, and avoiding wherever possible expensive packaged product, which is heavy on plastic and road miles. Over the last decade we have trained thousands of people in traditional craft skills, of all ages and backgrounds. Our main focus is on traditional building methods but alongside this we also hold workshops in other heritage skills, such as basketmaking, fresco painting, relief printmaking, pottery and stonecarving. We live and work by our philosophy at Plas Tirion - we are ten years into a gradual and sensitive restoration of the whole site, which includes a C16th manor house, a C15th Snowdonian hall house, C19th agricultural buildings, a Tudor garden, orchards, meadows and woodland. NBC was founded by Ned and Sophie Scharer. Ned is a qualified Conservator, specialising in the repair of decorative plaster, stone, statuary and monuments, and is an expert in traditional mortars. Sophie is a potter and printmaker, and an experienced arts educator.

Cornwall

Was born in Africa and lived in Lagos until her 9th birthday when her family moved back to the UK and more specifically Cornwall. Moving to Cornwall at such a key age shaped her passions and future in so many ways. Having always been in swimming pools and the sea in Africa the love of water intensified on the beautiful beaches and in the crashing Atlantic surf of the Cornish Coastline. The sea and its different moods have always been in her life. Being a keen surfer in her teens her love of playing in and with the elements became all encompassing when she discovered the thrill of kitesurfing. A pioneer in the early days of the sport she set up one of the first schools in the UK, and competed on the world circuit with her highest ranking being 3rd in the world. She also enjoyed other kiting challenges and set a world record by kitesurfing from Cornwall to Ireland ( under her maiden name Wharry), She discovered Glass by accident, through her landlady whilst studying at Falmouth art college, falling instantly in love with the look and the process of working with glass she decided to specialise in Architectural Stained Glass at Swansea. Though not actively working with glass during her sporting career, the fascination never left. Now retired from competition, glass is back as the focus of her passion. “Its colour, its reflections and translucent quality instantly captured my heart. To me it has a similar quality to water. It is enigmatic you can look at it, or through it. It is there and not there and can create a potent visual effect, either opulent or subtle. I love the challenge of designing for different buildings, interiors and people, whether a large architectural piece or an intensely personal small piece. “ Dreya

Language For Fun

language for fun

Newcastle-Under-Lyme

Join one of our Lovely, lively language classes for adults. We have 500 classes in the UK, just waiting for you to learn French, Spanish or Italian for fun!At the time, I was teaching in an FE college, and in a Primary School and studying for a PGCE in adult education. I quickly realised that many of the games and interactive techniques that the children enjoyed could be adapted for adult pupils. I decided to trial a language course for adults where the focus was on fun and conversation, rather than results and written work. So in 2007 I created French for Fun and held my first classes in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Through trial and error, I came up with a regular weekly format that worked and incorporated the learning theory from my PGCE. The classes are now built around a series of conversations, so everyone gets up and talks in every lesson at the same time (no trembling in front of the class). In January 2010, after enrolling our 60th student, I decided to see if French for Fun worked with other languages. In March 2010, Sally and Alejandra started to translate the programme in to Spanish with great success and we have also finished the Italian translation. I also started to offer licences to other teachers, training them to use my materials and supporting them to set up their own language teaching business. We now have 100 teachers dotted around the country and we’re training more all the time, so there will be a class coming to somewhere near you soon. Yippee! If you know anyone who would like to get involved in the next chapter of this story, either as a learner, a teacher, or to translate the programme in to their language, get in touch!
