ABOUT US Enhancing Life Chances by Bringing Communities Together in Handsworth We exist to enhance the life chances of children, young people and families by bringing together diverse communities in Handsworth and across Birmingham. We manage a broad range of community and educational project working alongside our school association members and community partners to improve the lives of families. We focus on enhancing the life chances of children in our city, on family health and wellbeing and on social integration. We do this through our strategic priorities: STRATEGIC PRIORITIES to support schools to work together and share learning for improvement organise initiatives that help to raise the aspirations of local children and their families promote good citizenship and the advancement of learning for all. We have enabled a huge variety of projects since our inception in 1999, including our flagship Young People’s Parliament, our schools learning networks and more recently organising our community’s response to Covid-19 pandemic: creating a food distribution hub from our conference centre.

Dr Shelley James is an international expert on light and well-being, TedX and keynote speaker, WELL Advisor and Visiting Lecturer at the Royal College of Art. She is also a trained glass artist and electrician. Light is as important to the healthy function of every cell in your body as food, water and air. Shelley is on a mission to inspire others to harness the power of the humble lightbulb to be healthier, happier and save the planet too. Clients include global lighting and technology brands and regulators, healthcare and education trusts, architects and designers, academic institutions and museums. A recent social media campaign to raise awareness of the impact of light on teens was translated into three languages and reached over 2.5 million young people around the world. Her recent TedX talk was selected for the Ted platform. It’s now had over 100,000 views and was in the top three most-watched Ted talks in May.

The High Nature Centre

The High Nature Centre is a 5 acre smallholding located on a coastal plateau 130m above sea level on the South Devon Coast. The site is level and surrounded by mature hedges, and is a short walk away from a dramatic picturesque stretch of the South West Coast Path and some of the most spectacular sandy beaches in England. High Nature was founded in 2009 by Permaculture Designers Catherine Middleditch and Douglas Lane. Originally a plant nursery known as Wayfield Nurseries, the small holding has a history of growing cauliflowers, cut flowers and was then managed by a local woman known as ‘Green Jane’ who grew beautiful organic fruit and vegetables for the local community. Over the last 10-15 years, the land has slowly been diversified using permaculture ethics and principles into a mixed use of eco-tourism, organic food growing, well-being activities, nature connection, rewilding, and social outreach. The Centre continues to be managed by Catherine along with Tobdan and their daughter Tanzen-Zangmo.

One of the UK’s first community owned farms Ffarm Moelyci has, since 2003, pioneered the idea that community ownership can play a part in how farming both grows good food and nurtures strong communities. With 390 acres of superb wildlife the farm includes a wide range of habitats including: The 220 acres of SSSI heath-land mountaintop; Gwynedd’s finest grasslands for finding fungi. This rich environment is the backdrop to the new era at Ffarm Moelyci. In 2018, after a long period of uncertainty, the farm was sold on the open market to a consortium Ymlaen Moelyci. Ymlaen Moelyci is a consortium of 10+ individual landowners who work collaboratively to make Ffarm Moelyci a success. Each member is able to drive their business to success on their own land, whilst all coming together to pool ideas, inspiration and knowledge. Whilst now being privately owned, the farm can continue to provide benefits its community has come to love and much much more…
