A recording of Alastair's live online performance during the Covid-19 crisis for the World Storytelling Cafe Alastair K. Daniel is a performance storyteller, researcher, writer and consultant in storytelling (and related fields) working in the UK and abroad. Following twelve years touring schools in the UK and the Low Countries with The Story Tent, in 2010 Alastair made the move from professional storytelling to academia. In the summer of 2022, Alastair ended his term as Principal Lecturer in Primary English at the University of Roehampton in 2022 to focus on storytelling once more, and develop his work as an independent scholar. Alastair's 'Story Tent' style brings traditional and literary texts to life through physicalisation, puppets, masks, costumes, artefacts, rhymes and songs - creating performances in which the distinction between performer and audience become blurred. The Story Tent project came out of Alastair's use of storytelling as a teaching strategy with children with profound emotional and behavioural difficulties. He found that storytelling (contrasted with story-reading) provided a unique method of drawing children, who often had difficulties with imaginative play, into new worlds. As a consultant and researcher, Alastair has worked with a range of organisations and specialises in the application of oral storytelling in educational contexts and the use of narrative analysis to evaluate educational programmes.

My Personal Story I was born in East London, England in 1963. I live in Buckinghamshire England, working with clients globally. I am the proud mother of two adult children and four grandchildren. I grew up in a family who endured and suffered poor mental health, narcissistic abuse, and addiction issues. As a child and young adult, I battled with chronic depression, fear, and anxiety. In my 20’s I went into long term personal psychotherapy and group therapy. This was the catalyst for me in becoming a therapist. Though personal development, increased self-awareness, and behavioural change I was able to turn my life around and began to live a healthier and more fulfilling life. This personal work gave me the desire and passion to help others face their fears and abuse issues while healing and developing self-awareness. My intention and focus are to help and enable client’s live life to their full potential and become the best version of themselves.

The Unicorn Centre, a registered charity, is a purpose built riding for the disabled facility which offers riding therapy and learning and training opportunities for over 200 disabled adults and children from the Tees Valley area each week. Opened in 1998, the Centre has become an established part of the local community, with a strong contingent of about 100 local volunteers who assist with riding lessons each week. View our video about the Unicorn Centre and what it can offer here: Unicorn Centre Video Our aim is to provide riding for people with disabilities in an inclusive, safe and supportive environment that will allow each individual to achieve their full potential. To provide this service we depend on a committed group of staff and volunteers and input from families and personal assistants.With limited funding from user fees, we rely entirely on fundraising and donations to subsidise the cost of lessons. In addition we depend on contributions by able-bodied individuals and clubs also making use of our facilities. The Centre works across the spectrum of disabilities, age range, social status and environments. Our focus is to ensure that each individual is given the chance to derive a direct therapeutic benefit and the opportunity to achieve their full potential; whether that be sitting with support astride a pony and riding down one side of the arena or competing at Paralympic dressage level.

Concern surrounding underachievement of young males was brought into sharp focus in 2007 by the independent REACH report. Sponsored by The Home Office, The Department for Communities and Local Government and The Department for Education and Families, the report explored the costs associated with the problems that can arise from a disadvantaged socio-economic background, in this case specifically for young black males. These costs are associated with over-representation in the Criminal Justice System and reduced gross earnings and taxes associated with educational underachievement. They are estimated at £808 million a year and could amount to £24 billion over the next 50 years if the underlying issues are not addressed. From a working-class background himself, Clive attributes his corporate career success to hard work and maintaining a positive attitude. A key finding of the REACH report was a lack of positive male role models, particularly black male role models, in the media and the lives of young men. Clive knows from experience that the socio-economic gap to success can be bridged – he has held a number of senior level HR positions, is a company director and was awarded an OBE in 2010 for his contributions to the REACH report and the workplace mediation industry. Thus his involvement in the REACH report, together with his own personal experience, has inspired the development of the Bridge Builders Mentoring Scheme.

The Survey Association, known generally as TSA, is the trade body for commercial survey companies in the UK. The association was formed in 1979 to give a focus for private sector businesses in land and hydrographic survey. It is important to realise, however, that it is not a regulatory body. The role of TSA is to promote best practice amongst its members, provide a forum for members for discussion, debate and continuing professional development and, to the wider audience such as engineers and architects, provide guidance on new methods and techniques and a list of suitably qualified and experienced companies. Today, the association has over 200 companies in membership as full, associate, supplier, affiliate or academic members directly involved in the geospatial profession. TSA is also involved in lobbying Government departments when appropriate and other agencies such as the Environment Agency regarding policies likely to affect or involve the survey profession. TSA meets regularly with RICS and CICES on a range of issues and has established a group called the SLG, or Survey Liaison Group. This body convenes at regular intervals to examine matters of mutual interest and to ensure that there is little or no duplication of effort by the three bodies. Representatives from the Geospatial Commission also regularly join SLG meetings. As a trauma focused therapist, Raquel established a counseling and consultant practice to help people work through their most challenging experiences and support the professional development of the next generation of future trauma focused clinicians. It's known that experiencing trauma can block the brain's natural way to recover from distressing events. Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life or safety that can leave one feeling overwhelmed and isolated and can impact the nervous system, resulting in a traumatic stress response. It's essential to utilize healing strategies that focus on the mind and body to heal from a traumatic experience. As such, Raquel trained in both EMDR and Somatic Experiencing® approaches.  Raquel chose to specialize in EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing because it has been extensively researched and has demonstrated effectiveness in treating trauma or other distressing life experiences. EMDR therapy is designed to reactivate the natural healing process through alternating eye movements, sounds, or taps. As a SE™ Practitioner in Training, she integrates Somatic Experiencing® techniques into her practice. Somatic Experiencing® is a body-oriented approach to healing trauma and other stress disorders. The SE™ approach releases traumatic shock from the body, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma.
