Simon Brooks works with schools and educators around the world interested in building cultures of thinking, where children delight in their learning and develop deep, meaningful and lasting understanding through the process of becoming critical and creative thinkers. Simon holds an Honour's degree in English Literature from Cardiff University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of Worcester, and a Master of Educational Studies degree from the University of New South Wales, Sydney Australia. In 2014, he was the recipient of the prestigious UNSW Dean's Leadership Award, and was honoured to become a fellow of the Project Zero Institute at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is currently in the process of writing a book introducing a new framework for teaching and learning called Curiosity-Based-Learning. Educator - Facilitator - Change Agent Simon has enjoyed many years’ experience in senior educational leadership roles, working in both government and independent sectors in the UK and Australia. His first significant leadership role was as Head of English at Cleeve School in Cheltenham, UK. Following this, Simon spent ten years as Director of Teaching and Learning at Masada College in Sydney Australia, developing close connections with Dr. Ron Ritchhart and the Project Zero team at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In this role, Simon led the transformation of the school into a lighthouse school for Cultures of Thinking pedagogy and practice, and became a key influencer in the cultures of thinking movement in Australia. Simon’s most recent in-school role prior to becoming an independent educational consultant in 2016 was as Regional Principal for an international network of independent schools. In 2017, Simon became a founding member of the Project Zero Sydney Network, and continues his work with this not-for-profit organisation designed to share Harvard Project Zero ideas with the educational community. In 2018, Simon and his family moved from Sydney to Cheltenham in the UK, and he continues to work closely with partner schools in the UK, Australia and around the world. Kent Tigers Basketball Club

The Kent Tigers Basketball Club was founded in 2021 by Sten Mayunga. The club began its journey in Division 3 of the local league, quickly establishing itself as a formidable force in the region. The inception of the club was driven by a desire to create a community-focused and elite basketball club within the Kent region. In 2022, the club expanded its program with the launch of its juniors program. This program offers structured basketball training and competitive opportunities for boys and girls from under-12 to under-18 levels. The same year, Kent Tigers entered into a significant partnership with the Universities at Medway. This collaboration aimed at taking control over the basketball program at the Medway University campus, enhancing opportunities for university students to engage in high-level basketball. In its inaugural season, the Men’s senior team showcased exceptional performance by going unbeaten in the League and clinching both the Medway Basketball Association D3 title and the Nobby Crouch Plate with a decisive 93-41 win over Iroquois. Kent Tigers is committed to providing a complete player pathway, a vision championed by General Manager Sten Mayunga. The club operates in Dartford and other areas within Kent, catering to various abilities and genders. In addition, Kent Tigers has formed a partnership with Little Hoopers [https://littlehoopers.org.uk/], a child-friendly basketball program known for its innovative approach to introducing basketball to young children. Little Hoopers’ programs, designed for children as young as three years old, focuses on creating a safe, fun, and educational environment for young children. This partnership enriches the club’s structure, extending its pathway to include foundational basketball experiences for toddlers and preschoolers, fostering early engagement with the sport. As a community-driven club, Kent Tigers has emphasised creating opportunities for local engagement and sports development. Their partnership with the Universities at Medway and Little Hoopers is a testament to their commitment to fostering basketball at the grassroots and university levels, ensuring a sustainable and inclusive growth of the sport in the region. This approach led them to win the Basketball England South East community club of the year in 2022.

I’m Matthew and I’ve been helping my students succeed at school and university since 1992, including over 13,000 hours of one-to-one tuition to over 400 students. My philosophy is: more than higher grades. I teach A level Maths and Further Maths, A level Statistics, and A level Physics. At GCSE level I have worked very successfully with students aiming for a grade 6 and above. I also help undergraduates on courses with mathematical content, such as Economics and Business Studies. My focus is on achieving high grades through understanding the material. I tailor my approach depending on individual needs and interests and I believe in making the subject as simple and enjoyable as possible. I am enthusiastic, friendly and approachable. I really want my students to succeed and I’m very happy to be contacted for help outside of their lesson time. I was recently invited by Talksport Radio to be their “maths expert” to speak on the topic of coin tossing, in the context of determining who bats first in a cricket match. You can read a fuller version of what I said here. UCAS + OXBRIDGE ADVICE It is not enough simply to do well at A level, of course: students need to be given the tools to succeed at university. To that end I take a very full interest in their education generally. As one student recently put it, I am “so much more than just a maths tutor”. For example I give guidance and support with university entrance, including the UCAS personal statement, applying to Oxford and Cambridge, and interview preparation, and I have personal experience of working in both the legal and accounting professions. I’ve written a detailed guide for university applicants: Writing your UCAS personal statement. ACADEMIC HISTORY + TEACHING EXPERIENCE I have an outstanding academic record and over twenty-five years experience as a teacher and examiner, during which I’ve received excellent feedback from my students and their parents. I have tutored over 400 students in Harrogate: that’s over 13,000 hours of one-to-one teaching since I started tutoring in 2006. FEES My fees are £220 per month, which covers four one-hour lessons and ongoing continuous support and help outside of lesson time. I do whatever I can to help my students succeed: I’ve even answered messages from a frantic student at midnight, and I’m always happy to talk to parents and guardians. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Because I tutor full-time, I only teach from my home on Victoria Avenue, in central Harrogate, and online. I teach on weekdays from 4pm to 9pm. Fascinated by the inner workings of human beings, as teenagers, my friend Julie and I would escape games lessons at Bath Convent to read poetry - hidden behind the coats in the cloakroom. We’d sit and contemplate what the great poets were trying to convey for hours at a time. We’d stay up all night sometimes, talking at length about how life worked. I took this inquisitive appetite for knowledge to university where I became enamoured with the confessional nature of the American poets who seemed capable of expressing the internal experience with infinite precision. In discovering the perspective-shifting teachings of Neuro-Linguistic Programming in the mid-80s, I came to understand how important it is to invest in your future and dedicate time and energy to your development. And so, that’s what I set out to do - not only for myself but to help others achieve this too.
