The Marley Andrews School Of Soccer

Colchester

I am 25 years old and football is and has been my life since the age of 6. My first real taste of football was an after school club at the Gilberd School. This was where my passion for football ignited. I had been attending the club for approximately a year when one of the coaches recommended me to Colchester United. I knew I had a real talent from the amount of attention I was receiving and my passion for the game continued to grow. Soon after, I was invited to attend ACP sessions (Advanced Coaching Programme), which is a group of players that have been scouted, training together hoping for a chance to trial with Colchester United’s Centre of Excellence. Whilst I was training with the ACP, I was also playing for Lexden Saints. I was very happy here and my skill set along with my natural ability was expanding. At the age of 8, I was selected to trial with the Colchester United U9's. MY TRIAL WAS SUCCESSFUL! I signed for Colchester United and joined the U9’s. I was lucky enough to remain part of the club all the way through the youth system through to signing my first professional contract when I was 18. The main highlights of my career to date have to be, scoring 4 in a match against QPR when I was 9, and playing for the first team in pre-season friendlies. After being released, I signed for Heybridge Swifts, I then had 2 spells with Stanway Rovers. I am now playing for AFC Sudbury. I have set up The Marley Andrews School of Soccer to bring my skill, technical knowledge and passion of the game to children and help them develop as I did, nurturing any and all natural talent. As for my game, I believe that I have the ability and passion to play at a professional level and will be pursuing this alongside MASS.

Diamond Minds

London

I’m the creator of Diamond Minds, helping people like you breakthrough your blocks by using imaginative journaling and coaching. I used journaling during the stressful periods in my life – moving countries, moving homes, relationship breakdown. Now I use it for creative thinking, gathering insights, renewing motivation and strengths-finding! I love working with individuals and organisations brimming with ideas, hungry for growth, with creative sparks and love for their work popping from the moment they wake up! And yet, there is something getting in their way. That’s where I come in. I help clients move from block to breakthrough using creative approaches of journaling and coaching. I am creative and enthusiastic – and grounded and practical. In journaling I invoke imagination and play as, often, writing from “I” can be tiring. What is needed to jolt us out of our habitual or negative thinking are creative prompts. I always thought the world didn’t end at the end of my street! Growing up on the tiny island of Guernsey, I felt the pull of the other side, beyond St Peter Port Harbour! And stepping out, I… …..spent about a decade working overseas – Russia mostly, in Moscow and Ekaterinburg. I also lived in the Czech Republic, Japan, Italy, France and Germany. I went on many work trips to Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria for human rights organisations. ……I co-founded and ran a number of companies. Raise Your Game, a social enterprise which supported the young unemployed start their own businesses in London, and coached young students in pupil referral units and youth offending. Even earlier, I co-founded Communicating Cultures which worked in Russia on an ethnic minorities and the media project with partners the BBC Training School in Ekaterinburg and the Interethnic Cooperation Centre which is still going strong!

Ruislip,

James Gregory is the Founder & CEO of the Manchester-based Charity, Families Against Violence (FAM). The Charity has its origins in a tragic event over 13 years ago when the Founder’s son was shot dead in a case of mistaken identity in a gangland act of revenge. James personally experienced the lack of support for Black families in such tragic circumstances and resolved to do something about it. He founded Families Against Violence, a charity supporting principally Black and ethnic minority families in the Moss Side area with the over-arching aim of helping to prevent young people getting sucked into anti-social behaviour, criminal activity, gangs and violence. FAM works with hundreds of children and young people each week. The Charity uses sport, principally football, to engage with children and young people. Trained and experienced coaches can then mentor and become role models, helping sometimes hard-to-reach young people find pathways into training and employment and to have better life-chances. Separate from his role with FAM, James is the CEO of AAM. In both of these roles, and working with a network of experienced and inspirational coaches and trainers, he: – I. Networks with local and regional stakeholders, including in the criminal justice system; II. Acts as an advocate for addressing social injustices, particularly for Black and Ethnic Minority Communities; III. Plans, organises and runs sports events and activities for young people; IV. Plans and organises training events for young people; V. Manages a network of local sports coaches; and VI. Mentors young people. To support his role, James is a certified football coach and has obtained qualifications in ‘Working with Gangs’ and ‘Training the Trainer’, both from Birmingham University. He also has earned a mentoring Diploma from Manchester Metropolitan University. Feeding into his role with FAM, James spent 12 months as a Youth Worker for User Voice, an organisation that gives a voice to people in the criminal justice system. In that job he worked with young offenders in prisons help manage their reintegration into society.

The Asfari Foundation

the asfari foundation

London

We met away from our home countries and settled in England decades ago. We are both keenly aware of how fortunate we have been in escaping the tragedy and destruction caused by war, occupation and poor governance. We also realise the importance of a strong civil society and the rule of law, of exposure to diversity and tolerance and the lasting impact of a good education. We established the Asfari Foundation in 2006, after years of reactive giving. We wanted to create a long-term impact that focuses on the issues we felt most passionately about – education, and the building of a strong civil society which is the foundation for any fair, resilient, sustainable and productive society. We are proud of what the Foundation has accomplished in its short life. Whilst there is no limit to what should be done, especially in the countries we originally came from, through our partners we have provided scholarships, fellowships and training to hundreds of young people across the UK and the Middle East, established the Asfari Centre for Civil Society and Citizenship at the American University in Beirut and provided relief and education to tens of thousands of Syrians, displaced following the recent uprising, to name just a few programmes. Young people deserve a good education and the right to live in tolerant and pluralistic societies. So much ability cannot be wasted. Hope for a better life will not die in the face of today’s grim realities, especially in the Middle East. We want to play a small role in realising the potential of the youth, to make manifest our shared dreams of a safer, more inclusive and happier tomorrow.
