West Central London Fixers bring together volunteer repairers and the community to fix their electronics for free. The idea is to nurture repair culture in the community, rather than throwing away electronics – indeed e-waste has become a huge environmental problem. The events are open to volunteer learner repairers so are educational as well. WCL Fixers currently organise monthly free repair events at the Dalgarno Trust and the Space in North Kensington as well as at the Livat shopping centre in Hammersmith. The idea however is to have three branches: WCL Fixers – North Kensington WCL Fixers – Hammersmith WCL Fixers - Westminster - from April 2023 We are supported by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the London Borough of Hammersmith Fulham. We work in partnership with the Restart Project. West Central London Fixers also engages in the private repair and recycling of laptops. However, as we do not stock spare parts for all electronics, it may be at times best to seek professional advice. Click on the link to locate your local repair shop. Reuse things: Library of Things, also present at Livat Hammersmith, helps you save money and reduce waste by affordably renting out useful Things like drills, sound systems and sewing machines from local spaces. My Grandpa Stanley Waughman started me off with woodwork at the age of 3 - a good solid age for a girl to start working with hand tools. He was a leather worker by trade and, because of this, his hands were huge, hard and calloused – he could cusp a wasp in them without feeling its sting. As a child I knew he must be very important because his name, Stanley, was written on all his tools. Up until I was 6 years old I lived in Galston, Ayrshire, and just two doors down from my Grandparents. Ours was a quiet little cul-de-sac, except on days where I played my bright, plastic Fisher Price record player on the street corner. This was in the early 80’s, when we all played outside and scuffed knees and grubby nails were a sign of a good days play. I’d pick up pretty bits and bobs and pop them in my pockets to show my friends – some pretty stones, a handful of gooseberries, and once, the severed head of a pheasant that sent them scarpering and squealing. I just thought the feathers were beautiful. To this day, I still have a soft spot for pheasants.

I learned to sew and embroider at a very young age, with skills passed down through generations of Irish Grandmothers.  These skills have been honed with training from some of the worlds' leading embroidery schools such as Hand and Lock and the Royal School of Needlework in London. With over 25 years of experience, I own and operate the Maire Curtis Lakeland Studio and accept bespoke commissions from all over the world for individuals and couture designers. Growing up and living in the stunning Cumbrian Lake District provides an endless source of inspiration and when I am not stitching or designing, I am to be found up to my elbows in dirt in the garden or drawing and painting. Whilst face to face workshops prove very popular, I am now offering courses and workshops online to a wider audience.  This also allows people to learn at their own pace in the comfort of their home. Now that our courses are hosted directly via the Cademy website, you have instant access to dip in and out as you choose any time you want. COURSE FEATURES All of our courses feature in depth tuition with professional hints and tips supported by images and videos.  You also have direct tutor support for six months from registration.  Contact information will be provided in the course notes. A course pack will be posted to you upon registration but the course has been designed so that you can make a start straight away whilst you await your parcel.
