Lighthouse Futures Trust is an innovative and forward-looking organisation with a mission of changing the lives of young adults. We do this by designing and delivering engaging employability programmes that include opportunities to work with a range of local employers via a supported internship. Our curriculum focuses on two areas – Liveability and Employability – and is aimed at students aged 18+ with an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP). We start by getting to know each of our interns so that we can understand their skills, experiences and aspirations for the future. We then devise a bespoke programme for them which combines a range of different elements including: working on-site at a range of local employers; 1 to 1 coaching & mentoring; group work; support in gaining qualifications in Maths and English; participating in an enterprise project where they learn to create and launch a new product and service. Our talented students have a range of support needs. Some have mild to moderate learning disabilities, others are on the autistic spectrum or have social, emotional or mental health support needs. They join the programme because they want to move into paid employment and showcase their many skills and talents and just need some extra support in order for them to fulfil their potential. Our role – and our passion – is to help unlock their talents and shine a light on their abilities. From the beginning of their journey with us, we support or students to develop skills so that they can forge their own pathways in work, accessing specialist support as and when they need it, but taking ownership of their future, from the start. We believe that this helps them to find and keep paid employment more easily, and thus create a more sustainable future.

Karin Schamroth is a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist in Deafness, and creator of smiLE Therapy. She worked in the National Health Service in the UK for 30 years. For 20 years, with deaf babies, pre-schoolers, primary and secondary aged students for Whittington Health NHS (North London). She graduated with a BSc from Manchester University in 1984, and taught English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) for 4 years. She qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 1990 from City University. She has worked with Deaf children & young people, in a range of setting – units in mainstream schools (both Total Communication and Oral) and Deaf Schools (Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children, and Blanche Nevile School for Deaf Pupils). Her background in TEFL teaching, with its structured test-teach-test communicative approach, was invaluable in the development of smiLE. In addition, she was trained by Jenny Mosley in Quality Circle Time. This has had a significant influence on the group respect principles used in delivering smiLE Therapy. She was advisor for three MSc projects at City University on the effectiveness of the smiLE approach – Alton (2008), Lawlor (2009), Curtin (2018) and supported G. Medone with her MEd project at Birmingham University, School of Education, on Assessing smiLE Therapy’s relevance to young people with autism, unpublished (2015). She is currently clinical supervisor for a Clinical Doctorate Research Fellow (NIHR). Karin now works Independently, developing smiLE Therapy modules with adolescents and young adults and runs the company that trains professionals in smiLE Therapy. Karin has trained Speech and Language Therapists, Teachers of the Deaf, Special Needs Teachers, Mainstream Teachers, SENCOs, Occupational Therapists, Communication Support Workers and Special Needs Assistants, to use smiLE Therapy since 2008. Karin, together with Emma Lawlor, wrote the first smiLE Therapy book, published in October 2015 by Routledge Publishing

In 2016, Brunel celebrated 50 years as a university. However, our history can be traced back much further to 1798 through our predecessor colleges of Borough Road College, Maria Grey College, Shoreditch College and the West London Institute of Higher Education and as well as through Acton Technical College then Brunel College. Our rise since 1966 has been impressive and our reputation grows year on year. Now a university of 12,746 students – 3,309 students engaged in postgraduate and research study – our special approach is to combine academic rigour with the practical, entrepreneurial and imaginative approach pioneered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The decision to be named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel was taken after much discussion. Rather than name the new College after a location, Dr Topping, the first Vice Chancellor of Brunel University (and former Principal of Brunel College) pleaded that the name should be a well-known person preferably an engineer or scientist associated in some way with Middlesex or Acton. Agreement was reached in March 1957 that person would be Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) is one of the great British engineers of the 19th century. Isambard was born into an industrious family in 1806, with his mother Sophia Kingdom working for the Royal Navy and father Marc Brunel being a prominent French engineer. Isambard took on formal training as an engineer and went on to build twenty-five railways lines, over a hundred bridges, including five suspension bridges, eight pier and dock systems, three ships and a pre-fabricated army field hospital.To add to this he was a keen social engineer, building housing estates, churches and hospitals. I am a dedicated Mother of three and I hold many years of experience with children, as I was previously a Childminder and Nursery Manager. I hold a BA HONS degree in Early Childhood and Education so you will always know that Little Notes has been built on a firm foundation of experience! Gary is an experienced leadership coach and trainer who has worked for over 30 years as a Headteacher, Headteacher Support Coordinator, trainer and facilitator in a variety of organisations mostly within the Education sector. Gary has helped to inspire significant change and development for a wide range of clients in schools, local authorities and businesses, and provides confidential and motivational support for mainly leaders. He provides a Headteacher and staff pastoral support service plus coaching and training predominately in schools based in South West but can work remotely with schools across the country. Jayne is an experienced and qualified Coach, Careers Adviser and Trainer who has been delivering teaching, coaching, training and advisory services for 30 years. Jayne is a proactive advocate for Equality and Inclusion and has worked on a number of diversity projects including setting up and leading the employer mentoring scheme at the University of the West of England whilst working there as a Careers Consultant. She has previously worked in Primary, Secondary and Advisory teaching roles specialising in emotional intelligence, mental health, race equality and special needs. Jayne has designed and delivered training programmes including those specifically aimed at women, ethnically diverse individuals particularly in the areas of career, emotional well-being, positive psychology and personal development.

My name is Paula Ashton and in 2012 I started Ashton People Solutions, a company which provides HR support, advice and consultancy to small to medium sized businesses across the UK. I have worked in HR for over 20 years in corporate organisations such as Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland, Dixons Group and the automotive sector. I developed Ashton People Solutions as a result of friends and family business-owners requesting my help with HR issues. I soon realised that there was demand for ad-hoc HR support for smaller businesses, either on-site or remotely. I have extensive experience of dealing with employment law advice, HR policy advice – including disciplinary and grievance-, maternity and absence management. I have managed large-scale recruitment and selection campaigns and can offer this service along with training and development programmes. I have a Masters in Personnel & Development and a Chartered MCIPD qualified member. In addition to this, I am also a Qualified Trainer, Level A Psychometric Assessor and Level B Personality Profiling Assessor. Claire and Brigid are HR Assistants and joined me in April 2021. Claire holds a Level 5 CIPD HR Management qualification and a 1st class honours degree in Law & Business Management. Claire has 15 years of valuable HR experience from her background which includes the public and private sector and education. Brigid also holds a Level 5 CIPD HR Management qualification and is an Associate CIPD member. Brigid has eight years worth of HR experience in the private and charity sector, working at The Trafford Centre and Chester Zoo. CTVC is a multi-BAFTA-winning and Grierson nominated independent production company producing content that raises important ethical and moral issues, from the perspective of all faiths and none. Broadcasting across all networks, both in the UK and internationally, our television, radio, education and online platforms aim is to get people thinking and talking. Established in 1978 by Lord and Lady Rank, CTVC is a registered charity which receives a grant from the Rank Foundation; a grant-giving charitable trust whose mission is to improve the lives of young and disadvantaged people and their communities, across the UK. The company ethos was sparked in the 1930s when, as a Sunday school teacher, J. Arthur Rank became frustrated by the limited teaching materials for children and decided to take matters into his own hands (a legacy we continue today through our subsidiary, TrueTube). He established the ‘Religious Film Society’ to produce films for schools and churches. From there the slate and variance of projects grew, and Lord Rank went on to purchase the Odeon Cinema chain and Elstree Studios, as well as set up the legendary Pinewood Film Studios. The Centre for Television and Communication, as it became known, saw the thriving operation move to newly built studios in a converted country house named ‘Hillside’. Based in Bushey, North London, an early production, Will the Real Jesus Christ Please Stand Up? featured a fresh faced, young Hugh Grant. In 2005 we changed our name to CTVC Ltd and although we have progressed with the rapidly changing media landscape, the principles laid out by Lord Rank’s vision are still at the heart of everything we do.
