This was me 12 years ago, aged 16 and weighing 15 stone and 8 pounds. I battled with my weight for much of my childhood, averaging a weight gain of a stone a year. This had a significant and negative impact on my emotional wellbeing and I became very creative in my attempts to cover the embarrassment I felt about my physical presentation. Not only was my self- esteem on the floor, so was my confidence. I remember Fridays at school very well, it was the day we had swimming which meant having to expose my physical form in front of my peers which I found humiliating and difficult to deal with. This ended with me trying every trick in the book to avoid swimming including skiving and feigning illness. My weight issues impacted on my passion for golf too, during the summer months I continued to wear a jumper in an effort to hide my body. I tried to lose weight through yo-yo dieting, self-education and slimming pills but nothing seemed to work and I was left feeling de-motivated and with my self-confidence at an all-time low. By the time I reached young adulthood, I had become very frustrated with the way I looked and knew that it was preventing me from reaching my full potential in life and I accepted that I had to make changes. I plucked up the courage to join my local gym and have never looked back. It was hard initially, I felt I was being judged by my size and initially the embarrassment did not leave me. All summer I would be training in the gym doing a mixture of cardio, weights and circuit training, this was in addition to playing several rounds of golf each week. My aim was to stay active all summer and this strategy achieved results; pounds were dropping off each week and my confidence grew as a result, I was more confident with the girls and was able to go swimming without being self- conscious.

About us In 2013, following many years of working with local young people through martial arts, self-protection as well as life skills training, Richard Pomfrett created ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’. His vision was to help educate and protect as many young people as possible on the subjects of bullying and abduction prevention. It was by starting off working closely with a handful of local schools, that gave him the opportunity to develop and create such unique and effective programmes for both. Since 2013 Richard’s passion for his work as pushed him to continually evolve and shape ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’ to fit the needs of young people today. It is through these specialised and unique sessions, that we aim to educate as many young people as possible. Raising awareness and passing on vital skills and knowledge at key stages in their development and helping prevent them from becoming part of the future dire statistics. The Birth of The Stay Safe Initiative.cic In 2019 ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’ become ‘The Stay Safe Initiative’. To further benefit the community in which we work, we made the decision to take our work from the private sector into the public sector. By doing this, we aim to take the valuable work we do with young people, into building stronger relationships with everyone we work as well as giving us scope to grow and play a bigger role within the community. Growing with the times, The Stay Safe Initiative continues to works with young people on the original subjects of Bullying and Abduction Prevention (Stranger Awareness) but now also provides relevant Internet Safety advice as well as training up many young people within schools to be Stay Safe! Mentors (possibly to become future members of #teamstaysafe themselves one day). As times move forward we continue to evolve and stay relevant ensuring we are delivering the best, most up-to-date education on the subjects we now specialise in.

Mindfulness Connected Learning delivers mindfulness courses, events and workshops to organisations, schools communities, young offenders, parents and families. Veronica is a qualified teacher with over 25 years’ teaching experience. She has taught a variety of ages and groups of children and young adults both within mainstream and special education, including children with severe learning difficulties and with emotional and behavioural difficulties. Her motivation in teaching mindfulness is to create a space where people feel safe and valued and where they can explore and experience the benefits of mindfulness practices in a relaxed and comfortable setting. She is committed to teaching children and adults how to integrate mindfulness into everyday life. Veronica works with individuals and groups to embed mindfulness into the culture of organisations and the communities that they house, and she is committed to enhancing working and learning environments by exploring the more challenging aspects of life and work in a safe and supported context. Cybersalon is the trading name of Digital Liberties Limited for its UK-based collective and think-tank activities focusing on the process and effect of the digital revolution in industry, society and its emerging digital cultures. Its members and audiences include entrepreneurs, technologists, hackers, activists, government officials, business and community leaders, academics, artists, creatives, and designers. Originally founded in 1997, from 1999 to 2003 Cybersalon ran monthly events at the Institute of Contemporary Art. From 2003 to 2006 Cybersalon was housed at the Dana Centre at the British Science Museum. Cybersalon re-launched in 2013 at the Arts Catalyst in London, and was based at the DigitasLBi agency in Brick Lane, Shoreditch, in the heart of London’s Tech City before moving into its current home at NewSpeak House, Shoreditch. The size of the contributing, senior membership of Cybersalon varies year to year from a core team of a dozen to a management and logistics group of more than twenty. Cybersalon audience membership numbers in the hundreds. In addition to monthly meetings, Cybersalon curates real and virtual spaces for people involved in digital creativity to participate and feedback their knowledge, curiosity, and concern to the wider community through the running of workshops, presentations and special projects in research and education. The recent HyperHabitat series of events, projects, and presentations investigated the changing nature of our living environments. Besides other activities, the series included Cybersalon events, participation in the London Hackney Council’s “Hack-ney-thon: 24 Hours to Hack for Hackney”, and a study of data gathering for the retail industry which in turn led to presentations and workshops at the Hybrid Cities conference in Athens, Greece. In recent years Cybersalon has additionally contributed a Digital Citizenship Bill of Rights for debate in the British Parliament, presented member book launches on workplace surveillance and the results of research into the political use of social media.

We play an important role within the profession of counselling in the UK and in May 2013 the Society was one of the first organisations to gain Accredited Register status with the Professional Standards Authority Accredited Register programme. Our belief is that counselling (and related therapies) should be seen as a vocation (not just a job but a worthy occupation) and that the relationship between counsellor and client is important for the outcome of therapy. We support and promote counselling and counsellors, offering a wide variety of benefits to our members and training providers. We have also created and published online CPD courses to support healthcare providers and those in public-facing roles. As an Accredited Register holder we meet the robust and exacting standards set by the Professional Standards Authority with particular emphasis on public safety and assuring that the best interests of the clients are protected. The National Counselling Society believes that all Accredited Registers should be seen as equal. To this end, we were instrumental in gaining recognition within the NHS for all Accredited Registers. NHS Choices information list Accredited Registers to reflect what should be equality of choice for all clients and patients. In addition, NHS Employers has added content encouraging the use and detailing the benefits of Accredited Registers, and the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme recognises the NCS alongside other Registers. We’re also very pleased that, again as a result of our efforts, Health Education England has amended the information on the NHS Health Careers website also to be in line with the aforementioned changes on NHS Choices and NHS employers sites, and promote inclusive hiring practices We are a not for profit organisation and the high standards of our Accredited Register are externally verified by the Professional Standards Authority. The organisation is bound by appropriate rules of governance including a constitution, codes of ethics, and a complaints procedure.

Man joined Bird College in April 2021; she is a qualified Accountant (FCCA) and holds a master’s degree in International Accounting and Financial Management from University of Glasgow. Man has more than 10 years finance and account management experience. After qualified from chartered certified accountancy practices, she joined the charitable sector 6 years ago as a senior finance person with the intension to apply financial skillset to support worthy causes. Man has a track record of transforming internal procedures to achieve financial objectives. Her area of expertise was overseeing accounting function; managing systems and procedures to ensure best practice in terms of financial control and compliance with relevant regulations such as SORP and pension; preparing annual statutory financial statements, budget and forecast; managing annual audit. Lutfur Haider BA (Hons) Assistant Accountant Lutfur joined Bird College in November 2022; as an Assistant Accountant with first class BA honours degree in Accounting and Finance. Lutfur was an Assistant Management Accountant in his previous role, progressing towards becoming an Accountant. Lutfur has been keen to advance in accounting and finance and has over 8 years experience with local community, retail and education. With a strong financial background, Lutfur has a proven track record of understanding and articulating needs and requirements of management involving wider operational departments. He possesses excellent communication skills, thrives with variety, enjoys working within a dynamic team solving problems and has an ability to adapt new strengths to suit the changing demands of a business. Daniel Taylor Production Manager Daniel originally trained as a performer at Bird College, but has always had a passion for the technical side of theatre. He has been fortunate enough to do event management, lighting and sound design and operation for professional events across Birmingham and London. Daniel’s experience both on and off the stage has allowed him greater insight into the inner workings of a professional production and has only served to inspire and fuel his artistic vision.

Kwes Kent Woodland Employment Scheme

KWES Kent Woodland Employment Scheme is a charity established in 2012 to offer employment (in the form of apprenticeships) to people seeking forestry employment, but having difficulty finding it. Those difficulties stemmed most often from lack of skills and experience, but were worse for those entering the jobs market from an institutionalised life, for instance in the armed forces or prison. KWES’s interest was mainly in mixed broadleaf woodlands – “boots on the ground” forestry in woods managed on a commercial basis. KWES has never been involved in arboriculture, (tree surgery or working at height), nor with hobby or recreational forestry. The word “apprenticeship” signifies a three-way contract, involving the apprentice, an employer and a training organisation. The government’s “trailblazer” apprenticeship scheme set up in 2017 runs (and provides a small level of funds) under rules administered by the Department for Education. It envisages two-year apprenticeships, with the apprentice typically working four days a week in the employer’s business, and being released for one day each week to be taught more theoretical knowledge in the trainer’s accommodation. Looking at this from the employer’s point of view, it gets the services, (part time and part subsidised), of a worker who starts with no skills or experience, but can be expected to gain these over the two year period. “Employing” him/her is thus a pure burden at first for the employer, but its apprentice should be more or less paying his/her way at the end of a couple of years, especially if s/he is still quite young. However, the real value to the employer is that its former apprentice, to be fully “employable” after qualification, needs in most industries another, say, two years of experience – and s/he can realistically only gain this in that same employer’s business, (which explains how the government can say that apprenticeships “lead to a continuing job”). It is the wage-rate that the employer pays his ex-apprentice during this period which gives the employer real value from the whole operation.

I am an experienced teacher based in Ilkley specialising in Secondary School Mathematics. I offer individual tuition in Maths for pupils from Upper Primary School through GCSE to A Level. By working as a tutor on a one-to-one basis I can build on the teaching received in school by identifying their individual needs and recognising and resolving their difficulties with this key subject. I believe all young people have the ability to achieve in Mathematics and the key ingredient is having confidence that you can master the topic. Many people are familiar with that feeling of not knowing where to start in maths and the loss of confidence undermines motivation making understanding difficult. By working with a tutor pupils can identify what they are able to do and then progress from the point at which they feel secure. Pace and approach is individually tailored to their needs and compliments methods already met in school. I have worked in Maths Education throughout my adult life. I gain a great deal of pleasure from working with young people and contributing to their development. For me the greatest reward professionally comes when a pupil has been struggling with a topic and suddenly they ‘get it’. I am also available to tutor adults who are seeking to improve their maths or need support to gain a maths qualification. During in the COVID 19 pandemic I continued to tutor using Zoom. This worked well and there are some advantages to using this medium - sharing IT content, recording worksheets plus no need for the student to travel to a lesson. Face to face tutoring is also an option at my home address, where I have a dedicated tutoring room. I shall be pleased to discuss the assistance you or you child needs and also the most suitable method for teaching the maths session. I studied Art & Design at Stourbridge Art College in the West Midlands for three years, before moving to West Sussex to gain an Art with Related Arts degree at Chichester University. My sculpture work featured nationally on ITV’s morning programme. Exhibitions of my work include West Dean College and Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, West Sussex. I have also had the privilege of exhibiting my work in the Awagami International Miniature Print Exhibition, Tokushima, Japan. Along with exhibitions at; Banks Mill Studios Derby, The Art House Wakefield, neo: Gallery Bolton, Gallery@OXO Oxo Tower Wharf South Bank London, Greenpea press Huntville Alabama, Hong Kong Baptist University Hong Kong and Cube gallery Moscow. After a period focusing on other art disciplines, I returned to printmaking and the joy of the process is what pushes my work forward creatively. Learning different printing methods has helped me to begin experimenting with distinctive approaches to my prints and printing style. I continue to enjoy drawing and working painterly with a variety of mixed media, developing my own instinctive style over many other art disciplines. After gaining my degree I went on to achieve my teaching qualifications, to teach 16+ students. I then gained my Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills (QTLS) professional status, which enables me to teach through all age groups (pre and post 16). I have been teaching Art classes in the West Sussex area for 20 years, both for local Adult Education and Chichester College, along with my own private workshops. I enjoy, and have taught, a wide variety of Arts & Crafts subjects and have an extensive & practical knowledge of many areas of the arts. Currently, I teach subjects as varied as Life Drawing, Watercolour, iPad Painting, Acrylics, Pastels and Chinese Brush Painting. I have also taught Pottery, Weaving, Face Painting and numerous craft classes. I am always striving to learn and pass on new techniques and ideas to my students. I hold a Level 3 NVQ in British Sign Language and am currently studying for my Level 6 NVQ. I also teach in this subject.
