Refuge In Literacy Uk

London

Refuge In Literacy UK began when children’s author Anne Stairmand donated signed copies of her books to a local domestic violence refuge at Christmas 2020. The response was so positive she wondered if this would be the case throughout the UK, and so she spent the following January and February speaking to over 300 refuges in the UK asking whether authors donating signed copies of their books to their local refuges would make an impact. From the joy of receiving a personal gift, to the simple joy of reading, to the educational, emotional and self-improvement opportunities books can present – which in turn can create empowerment and self-esteem – it was clear these books would have an impact. Children will have a sense of value, worth, self-esteem … They will harness a willingness to read, to learn, to savour the process of reading, escapism and transformative powers of a book. — Thurrock Changing Pathways Essex, 2021 Refuge In Literacy UK is also aiming to address a lack of consistency in literacy resources and training by supporting refuges with reading strategy prompts which feed into the National Curriculum. Our pilot refuges, currently nine across the UK, will help trial these, and evaluations will help us refine and improve. The wider benefits of a signed personal copy of a book cannot be underestimated, encouraging children and parents to become literacy confident in reading, writing and comprehension. — Glasgow Women’s Aid, 2021 We are a board of six directors and have seven board advisors with expertise in many different areas who attend meetings to support and advise throughout the year. The personal benefits of having a newly, personally signed book, creates a sense of empowerment. However, the benefits transcend far beyond the token of a personal gift. — Liverpool Women’s Refuge, 2021 As we are a non-profit organisation, the board are committed to helping those in domestic violence refuges to improve literacy life chances in for those in education and in the wider world.

Edplace

I founded EdPlace because of my experiences at school. As a dyslexic I had a lot of challenges. One of the biggest challenges I faced was being told that I wasn’t smart enough, but I turned this into an opportunity to prove everyone wrong. Looking back, that was made possible by these key things: Support, I was lucky enough to have huge support from my parents. It was their involvement that helped me get the best Hard work and confidence. These two things go hand in hand. I knew I’d put the work in and I believed I would succeed.I founded EdPlace because of my experiences at school. As a dyslexic I had a lot of challenges. GTG Training (Edinburgh)

gtg training (edinburgh)

The Glasgow Training Group was established in Kirkintilloch, Glasgow, in 1971, with the aim of delivering high-quality apprenticeships across the West of Scotland for the automotive industry. The company, which was created by an automotive retail consortium including Sir Arnold Clark, brought about much-needed change for apprentices and the entire industry, and introduced a varied and innovative training programme that would grow to become one of the most respected in the UK. Purchased by the Arnold Clark Group in 2003, the business soon became known as GTG Training Ltd. and expanded its offering to provide high-quality training courses and education across a wide range of disciplines, such as Business Skills, Computer & IT, Health & Safety, Transport & Logistics and Automotive Technical. With £50million of investment since 2004, GTG now owns five dedicated training centres – in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Wolverhampton. At the very core of the business lies a deep-seated passion for providing high-quality apprenticeships. We recognise the importance of investing in the future workforce and our aim is to give learners the skills and experience they need to succeed in the automotive, transport and health and safety industries. GTG hears the voice of its stakeholders and is always considering how best to meet their needs, including clients, learners, delegates, staff, the Board and the wider industry. That’s why we consistently reinvest our profits to provide flexible and effective workspaces, up-to-date technology, relevant and modern equipment, dedicated staff and more. The growth of the business has coincided with a number of important milestones – becoming the official provider of fleet services and volunteer training for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games; a visit from Prince Charles in 2015 following our involvement with Prince’s Trust Get into Cars initiative and our Training Provider of the Year award at the 2019 Talent in Logistics awards. Wellman Fitness

Liverpool

This was me 12 years ago, aged 16 and weighing 15 stone and 8 pounds. I battled with my weight for much of my childhood, averaging a weight gain of a stone a year. This had a significant and negative impact on my emotional wellbeing and I became very creative in my attempts to cover the embarrassment I felt about my physical presentation. Not only was my self- esteem on the floor, so was my confidence. I remember Fridays at school very well, it was the day we had swimming which meant having to expose my physical form in front of my peers which I found humiliating and difficult to deal with. This ended with me trying every trick in the book to avoid swimming including skiving and feigning illness. My weight issues impacted on my passion for golf too, during the summer months I continued to wear a jumper in an effort to hide my body. I tried to lose weight through yo-yo dieting, self-education and slimming pills but nothing seemed to work and I was left feeling de-motivated and with my self-confidence at an all-time low. By the time I reached young adulthood, I had become very frustrated with the way I looked and knew that it was preventing me from reaching my full potential in life and I accepted that I had to make changes. I plucked up the courage to join my local gym and have never looked back. It was hard initially, I felt I was being judged by my size and initially the embarrassment did not leave me. All summer I would be training in the gym doing a mixture of cardio, weights and circuit training, this was in addition to playing several rounds of golf each week. My aim was to stay active all summer and this strategy achieved results; pounds were dropping off each week and my confidence grew as a result, I was more confident with the girls and was able to go swimming without being self- conscious.

The Stay Safe Initiative

London

About us In 2013, following many years of working with local young people through martial arts, self-protection as well as life skills training, Richard Pomfrett created ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’. His vision was to help educate and protect as many young people as possible on the subjects of bullying and abduction prevention. It was by starting off working closely with a handful of local schools, that gave him the opportunity to develop and create such unique and effective programmes for both. Since 2013 Richard’s passion for his work as pushed him to continually evolve and shape ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’ to fit the needs of young people today. It is through these specialised and unique sessions, that we aim to educate as many young people as possible. Raising awareness and passing on vital skills and knowledge at key stages in their development and helping prevent them from becoming part of the future dire statistics. The Birth of The Stay Safe Initiative.cic In 2019 ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’ become ‘The Stay Safe Initiative’. To further benefit the community in which we work, we made the decision to take our work from the private sector into the public sector. By doing this, we aim to take the valuable work we do with young people, into building stronger relationships with everyone we work as well as giving us scope to grow and play a bigger role within the community. Growing with the times, The Stay Safe Initiative continues to works with young people on the original subjects of Bullying and Abduction Prevention (Stranger Awareness) but now also provides relevant Internet Safety advice as well as training up many young people within schools to be Stay Safe! Mentors (possibly to become future members of #teamstaysafe themselves one day). As times move forward we continue to evolve and stay relevant ensuring we are delivering the best, most up-to-date education on the subjects we now specialise in.
