As Chair of Governors at Blythe Bridge High School & Sixth Form, I would like to extend a warm welcome to those of you visiting our website. The governing body is involved with school life at many levels, ranging from ensuring that support functions (finance, premises management, health & safety) are completely aligned with the strategic vision of the school from a quality of education perspective, to sharing in the successes of the many talented students through Governor Awards and community events. I am incredibly grateful to my fellow governors for voluntarily devoting so much of their time and effort to the school community. Our governing body comprises elected representatives from the local authority, staff, parents and members of the community and the combined experience, skills and knowledge is vast. The job description for governors is clear, set the strategic direction of the school, hold school leaders to account for improvement and ensuring that the school budget is spent appropriately. As such, much of our time is spent working with Mrs Johnson and the senior leadership team to continually review and refine the quality of our provision through our subcommittee meetings. If you are reading this as a prospective parent, I encourage you to spend time to look through our website, the weekly newsletters and at our pages on social media platforms, our core values of pride, respect and kindness permeate every page or post. Arriving in England in 1999, our Mestre-Luis Negão founded the group with the name Capoeira Pedra do Sal, in honour of his home borough in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. At first, Luis Negão was teaching classes with no real vision for the group, but seeing the potential of his students, decided to return to Brazil for a period to take courses with reputable masters of the art, in order to feel qualified to pass on his knowledge and skills. He spent some time training with Mestre Salário Mínimo of Grupo Abolição, who gave his Professor graduation, and so he took the name Abolição back to England to establish Abolição Oxford Capoeira. During his work with capoeira, the focus of the group became more ingrained in the teachings and methodology of Capoeira Regional, over the years he has continued studying and searching for information to further his knowledge and understanding of Capoeira, passing this knowledge on to his students, and giving them opportunities to learn from Mestres and teachers via trips to Brazil, and exchanges and workshops in England. Gaining recognition for his work, the founder of Abolição Oxford Capoeira has become known as Mestre Luis Negão, and is a well respected master of Capoeira in England, Brazil and beyond. Students of the group have gone on to be graduated as Formados and Professores, continuing this work in London and Oxford, for many years Mestre Luis Negão ran a project in Abaete, Itapuã in Salvador to help children on the streets where his journey in capoeira began, The Abolição Trust was set up to fund this project, and another project was set up in South Africa by two students from England (Professores Xaruto and Mosqueteiro), now some students from this project are teaching classes of their own across South Africa. Mestre Luis Negão continues teaching classes in Taunton, England.

Situated in the heart of the community of Driffield, we are a unique and special place to learn. ‘Learning for Life’ is the foundation of all we do at Kings Mill and underpins our whole curriculum from Early Years through to Sixth form. The school caters for pupils aged 2-19 years. We are on two sites. The main school site houses Early Years through to Key Stage 4. The school was completed in May 2017 and has been purpose built to meet the needs of our pupils. Alongside eleven new classrooms we also have a new hydrotherapy pool, rebound room, sensory therapy room and sensory rooms. Students aged 16-19 are based at The Kings Mill Student Centre which is based at Driffield Secondary School approximately a mile away from the main site. This comprises three classrooms and a combined common room and food technology area. There is also opportunity for joint working with Driffield School. Our sixth form students also visit main site to access the facilities as required. All our pupils and students have complex needs and we offer specialist provision for pupils on the autistic spectrum and pupils with multi-sensory needs. Our curriculum principles and ethos are supported by a wide range of activities which happen on and off site. Sport plays a very important role in the life of the school and we believe in encouraging healthy competition and leadership skills.
