Following a military career, an MBA and a brief stint in banking, he joined Numicon Ltd, a maths education business as Chief Executive in 2008. Rapid growth led to sale to Oxford University Press in 2010. Having enabled a successful transition of the business into OUP, he launched National Numeracy as founding Chief Executive in 2012, building the organisation from little more than an idea to become a well-respected national charity with strong evidence of impact. The seeds of the idea for Plain Numbers were sown at National Numeracy. Having handed over as Chief Executive there in 2020, Mike is now utilising his unparalleled knowledge of this largely hidden consumer vulnerability to work with firms to enable people to make informed decisions across all areas of their lives.

Message to parents More Than Ed continues to operate as normal. We will not be wearing facemasks, or asking your children to do so, as we do not work in confined spaces and all young people at More Than Ed are classed as SEN. However, should you wish us or your child to wear a facemask in the car due to someone in your family being at higher risk of infection, please inform us. All students' temperatures will be taken prior to their journey to school, and any child that appears to have a higher than normal temperature will be asked to remain at home until they have received a negative COVID-19 test result (not a Lateral Flow Test result.) More Than Ed Therapeutic Provision offers a therapeutic education in a nurture-based environment for young people at risk of permanent exclusion from mainstream school, or those who have already been excluded. As an Attachment and Trauma Aware Provision, we offer in-house Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy. All our staff will adhere to all Government restrictions when not at work so that your child and family are protected as much as possible. Please ensure that you and your family continue to follow all rules and restrictions in order to help keep our staff and other students safe.

The experienced staff at DLC Training in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, have been providing high quality, certified safety training courses for over 25 years. Our company was started by a group of instructors who wanted to do something different: focus on smaller, more responsive classes, and provide important, but less popular and underserved courses. As well, one of our key goals was to provide a training environment for students to learn at their own pace. Things have evolved over time. We have taught courses that are near and dear to the hearts of our instructors, and have allowed instructors to develop and perfect their courses and teaching skills. Along the way we tried not to reinvent the wheel. We’ve become certified Canadian Red Cross training partners and work with the Canadian Safety Council to train our defensive driving, babysitting and home alone courses. We maintain high standards by having actual teachers help do the training. Our director of training has 2 Masters of Education degrees. Early on we realized that there was a need for people to be able to acquire their certifications or licensing in many fields. This led us to becoming a partner with Prometric, a world leader in technology-enabled testing and assessment solutions. We have thus created a computer lab to allow for a secure proctored environment. We went one step further and started another lab for others.

Concern surrounding underachievement of young males was brought into sharp focus in 2007 by the independent REACH report. Sponsored by The Home Office, The Department for Communities and Local Government and The Department for Education and Families, the report explored the costs associated with the problems that can arise from a disadvantaged socio-economic background, in this case specifically for young black males. These costs are associated with over-representation in the Criminal Justice System and reduced gross earnings and taxes associated with educational underachievement. They are estimated at £808 million a year and could amount to £24 billion over the next 50 years if the underlying issues are not addressed. From a working-class background himself, Clive attributes his corporate career success to hard work and maintaining a positive attitude. A key finding of the REACH report was a lack of positive male role models, particularly black male role models, in the media and the lives of young men. Clive knows from experience that the socio-economic gap to success can be bridged – he has held a number of senior level HR positions, is a company director and was awarded an OBE in 2010 for his contributions to the REACH report and the workplace mediation industry. Thus his involvement in the REACH report, together with his own personal experience, has inspired the development of the Bridge Builders Mentoring Scheme.

Once it became apparent the complex restoration of Pioneer was possible, the decision was made to set up Pioneer Sailing Trust in 1999. The trust, whose founder trustees were Mary Falk, Charles Harker and Rupert Marks, is a registered charity. From day one practical help and funding has arrived in generous measure from many individuals, organisations and local businesses. Pioneer’s new purpose is to offer young people the challenge of sailing, which often proves to be a life changing experience. Pioneer has accommodation for three qualified crew and twelve trainees. As a powerful and strong sea going vessel, she is ideally suited for day sailing or passage work in the Thames estuary, across the North Sea or the English Channel. Being a crew member highlights and emphasises many vital qualities essential in life and the trust believes these practical and new experiences helps develop young people. The trust also opened Harker’s Yard in 2009 to further its work with training and education in the marine industry and provided opportunities for work experience and apprenticeships in marine engineering and boat building and repair. Pioneer Sailing Trust works closely with life development trusts, training agencies, councils, social services and other organisations devoted to improving the life prospects of young people, many of whom deal with difficult circumstances. Young people often find time at the trust opens new windows of opportunity.
