Each session will include a teacher-led knowledge booster, exam practice, and immediate assessment and feedback on exactly where and how to improve. Home Schooling Our Home Schooling option is created for students who require an alternative learning environment and have unique requirements, that cannot be offered in a school setting. Students will follow the internationally recognised Cambridge curriculum, gaining transferable skills, sought after by top universities and employers across the world. Our Home Schooling programme is suitable for families who are seeking a different educational set-up or have other commitments, such as travel or sports. The School is one of the oldest in the country. The exact date of foundation is not known, but we know that in 1326 a Chantry School was already established at the old castle of Hanley. At the time of the Reformation, Hanley re-emerged as a Grammar School, and we have a charter from 1544 in the reign of Henry VIII. In 1633 a new body of Trustees was appointed and in 1733 the school was re-built; these buildings (much modified) are still in use today. The 1991 building programme considerably improved the facilities at the school and as a consequence of becoming a Specialist School for Languages we secured funding for a £2 million eight-classroom language and computing block which was opened in September 2008. Our magnificent new sixth form centre was opened in September 2016. Various additional building projects have expanded and enhanced facilities for performing arts, science, PE, humanities and maths departments. We have recently improved and enlarged dining facilities and student toilets. College (House) System The origins of our school can be traced back with some certainty to 1486, when it was given its own buildings and income. However, there is a suggestion that from as early as 1326 the chantry priest may have taught the children of the parish on or near our current school site. The parish of Hanley (later to become Hanley Castle) has an ancient and fascinating history. Although there is evidence of a Roman fort by the river, and of a Roman temple on the site of the church, the first direct references to Hanlee have been found in two charters dated 962 and 972 A.D. At the time of the Norman Conquest (1066-1088) the area was over-run with trees and like all forests belonged to the King of England, who enjoyed exclusive hunting rights. However, within 50 years areas of the forest had been cleared and Hanley had grown into a thriving community. The name Hanley comes from the old English han leah, meaning ‘high clearing’. We have named our new colleges after three major settlements within the forest, reflecting the ancient history of our unique community.

Triple A is an autism charity working across all of Cumbria. It was set up as a charity in 2016 as a response to a perceived ‘360 degree’ vulnerability within the autism community in Cumbria, and to provide better support among autistic adults living in Cumbria. Triple A was founded by Helen Storey, who has a long and successful record of developing projects to support marginalised communities. Helen has first-hand experience in the field of autism, underpinned by accredited learning (University Of Cumbria). Helen went on to become our first CEO, overseeing our incorporation as a CIO (a Charitable Incorporated Organisation) in 2018 and leading the charity until 2021. Our journey since 2016 has involved two office moves (we’re now based right next to Penrith bus station, in a lovely pink building), the development of a range of services to support autistic people right across Cumbria, and a range of autism awareness training programs. We now have a small team of dedicated staff, and in 2022 we welcomed Nick Rosenthal to the team as our new CEO – just in time to help us roll out two major new projects: running an NHS-funded post-diagnostic course to support newly diagnosed autistic people and launching a scheme to help autistic adults across Cumbria into paid, long-term employment. In the background we have a team of committed Trustees, many of whom are neurodiverse. We don’t want to point out which of our trustees and staff are autistic, as many people consider that to be very personal information, but lived experience of autism lies at the very heart of Triple-A. The Triple A team has designed a pathway of support for autistic adults (shown below), which focuses on social support, criminal and social justice but also on health and well-being for autistic people in Cumbria. Our charity aims to facilitate positive and sustainable change for autistic people – to raise awareness of the issues & challenges that autistic people face, and to bring people together to create and develop solutions. We may have seen a few changes as we’ve grown since 2016, but our core values remain the same!

Chef Monisha Bharadwaj is an award winning author, food historian and a food writer based in London, UK. Monisha is a qualified chef from the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai. She started Cooking With Monisha, situated in West London, in 2004. Today it is a successful school that attracts not only the home cook but also chefs who wish to learn Chef Monisha’s brand of simple authentic Indian cooking. Monisha has also created and taught her popular courses at the Ashburton Cookery School in Devon, The Bertinet Kitchen in Bath, Seasoned Cookery School, south Derbyshire and at Divertimenti in Knightsbridge. She is often invited to judge food events and has been a judge at the Guild of Fine Food’s ‘Great Taste Awards’ for the past several years. Monisha also holds a BA in Indian History and in 2013, she was invited to be Guest Lecturer at SOAS, University of London, to give a series of talks on ‘The History of India through its Food’. In 2017, she worked with Kew Gardens giving talks on healing Indian ingredients, and with the British Council on ‘How The British Fell in Love With Curry – a historical perspective from 1200-2017’. In 2018, Monisha was invited by the Wellcome Collection, London, to talk about Ayurvedic nutrition as part of their exhibition, ‘Ayurveda Man’ and opened the South Asian Spice Box residency at Borough Market, London, with a cookery demonstration of south Indian food. In 2019, she was invited to be a Guest Speaker on Indian food on a Cookery Legends cruise around the British Isles. She was awarded ‘Cookery Writer of the Year’ in 2003 by the Guild of Food Writers and her many books have been shortlisted for and won several prestigious international awards. In 2020, her book ‘Indian in 7- recipes using 7 ingredients or fewer’ won the Gourmand World Cookbook Award 2020 for the Best Indian Cookbook in the World. Growing up in India, Monisha was brought up on an Ayurvedic inspired diet, where food brought happiness and physical well being. Today, she brings her experience of and passion for ancient Ayurvedic wisdom to all the classes she teaches.
