Our Dawlish campus is situated in the coastal town of Dawlish near Exeter. It is a short walk from the town centre and the golden beach, with excellent transport links via bus or the Great western train line to Exeter, Plymouth and beyond. At Dawlish we provide learning programmes for around 80 learners, a small number of whom enjoy the residential experience in our onsite shared property, and in single and shared flats and houses in the nearby area. Our Torpoint campus is situated just a short walk from the ferryport and enjoys beautiful views of the River Tamar and beyond. We attract learners from both Plymouth and Cornwall to study here. Students benefit from accessing our local Torpoint community, but also take part in the huge range of trips and activities that Plymouth has to offer. At Oakwood Torpoint we provide learning for up to 25 learners. Torpoint is a day student only campus. Our newest campus, Oakwood Yate, is located in Yate, South Glos. with excellent transport links to Bristol and beyond. The campus benefits from being centrally located in the bustling town centre of Yate with a wide range of shops and leisure facilities providing excellent work experience and community access for our learners. At Oakwood Yate we provide learning for up to 15 learners. Yate is a day student only campus. The College’s focus is to develop the knowledge and skills of every learner to prepare them for independent life, living and work. We provide individualised and bespoke learning programmes that follow the pathways to adulthood, and include employment related qualifications and work experience. The College was inspected by OFSTED in September 2018, and judged to be good in all areas and Outstanding for Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare (PDBW), with inspectors describing the learners as…” making excellent progress in their personal development and behaviour. It helps to have the last name "Pure" - it goes with so many nouns - and as a teacher, it made perfect sense to put "learning" after my name. Pure Learning started when my triplet children were four years old. As a reading specialist, who had experience in the classroom and in the private learning center arena, starting a small tutoring business seemed like the logical next step. I could set my own hours, focus on working 1:1 with students who had dyslexia and other learning issues, homeschool my own children, AND I could develop materials along the way - something I always enjoyed doing as a teacher. When I began working as a reading specialist at a Montessori school, I started implementing spelling lessons I had developed. Orton-Gillingham-based lessons with explicit skills instruction involving letters and sounds AND the use of three modalities - visual, auditory, and kinesthetic - were the most effective. Some of my students were strong in one area but weak in another. By presenting all three modalities in a lesson, each student could find their own strength and I could see how my student learned best. The teachers saw the difference the lessons I had created were making in their students' spelling and writing and craved a program that would teach them how to teach spelling AND make sense to the students. From that, Working with Words evolved. Fast forward 20+ years and, today, I can look back and know that this Orton-Gillingham-based, multisensory approach focused on phonics and the six syllable types has been successful with early, struggling, resistant, underconfident, AND strong readers and spellers. Teachers who have used Working with Words better understand the generalizations and rules that exist in spelling English words and how to teach them. My name is Mike Hawthorne, founder of M-Theory Music. Here's a bit about me: Music has been a central element in my life from as far back as I can remember. Listening to, playing, creating, performing, DJing, producing, and teaching music have all featured throughout the years. While I am a proficient drummer, bassist, ukulele-ist (???), producer, and DJ, the guitar has always been my main instrument. I can't pinpoint where my love for guitar came from, but I do know that I was always drawn to it when I was younger. After getting into metal, grunge, punk and indie as a young teenager, the guitar made even more sense and my love for it grew and continues to do so to this day. I started learning the guitar approx 25 years ago, and very shortly after that, started sharing my learning with my friends. I found that I loved passing on the skills and knowledge almost as much as I enjoyed playing the instrument, and I took my first "proper" student (ie, not one of my friends!) when I was 17. I have been teaching people ever since then. I see it as a vocation and a personal duty to share the love of music with as many people as possible, and I'd still be doing it even after a lottery win! Since 2001, I have had at least one student on the go at any given time. I taught privately for many years, ans then began teaching with a local music service in 2010. In 2015 I was able to give up the "day job" and teach full time, something for which I am eternally grateful. I get to make a living out of my passion, I get to meet and form positive relationships with lots of wonderful people, and I get to share the joy of playing music with them... i keep wondering when i'm going to wake up!
