London Longsword Academy

london longsword academy

Bromley

Everyone is welcome to train, from beginners to expert martial artists, no matter what your age, gender or background may be. Here you will have the opportunity to study diverse medieval and Renaissance weapon styles, including longsword, sword and buckler, dussack, messer, rapier and dagger, in a safe, friendly and completely inclusive environment. LLA will help you find and exceed your limits, teaching you a martial art honed and made perfect through Europe’s many centuries of warfare. SIMPLE YET SOPHISTICATED Every technique shown is the simplest answer for the threat given, and the most effective way to attack and cover in one motion. What at first appears to be more complex, you will soon learn is the simplest way to deal with a more complex threat. POWERFUL BODY MECHANICS Applicable to most armed and unarmed martial arts. This art will teach you to fight using your entire body, maximising your power and honing your instinctive responses. LOGIC AND GEOMETRY At the LLA we use a simple four step training method. Each technique is based on logic and the demands of the situation, rather than clever or showy moves; it just happens that some techniques look damned good. The method breaks down each set of techniques into four steps, each student only progressing to the next part of the technique when they have mastered the first. This means that as a beginner you can train with more advanced practitioners straight away and never feel left behind, while allowing you to advance at your own pace. Variations in the four steps allow for overlaps and cross- referencing of responses and pressures, thus building your understanding and repertoire of combat simply and quickly. INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY One thing we are at pains to point out at the LLA is the multi-cultural nature of these arts. Manuals such as I.33 & Paulus Hector Mair’s Fechbuch (amongst many others), show women and men, white and black training together and it is also known that several masters of these arts were Jewish. This diversity is part of our art and history; we feel it should be a proud part of its future. LLA has a zero-tolerance policy for discriminatory behaviour or hate speech amongst its students, and aims to be a safe and welcoming space for all.

Mutleys Dog Training

mutleys dog training

Bristol

Mutleys offers dog training classes to puppies and older dogs, as well as one to one training for puppies and dogs. Mutleys uses gentle positive training techniques and reward based training to ensure that your dog learns in a fun and positive environment. Mutleys concentrates on puppy socialisation, getting a good start in life for all pups and educating owners to better understand the way the dog learns. We run puppy socialisation and training classes with guidance on common puppy problems. This is the most important time in a dog's life and it is important that the owner has guidance and understands how to train and communicate with their dogs to prevent problems from occurring. We also work with older dogs that may just be joining you and need to start their training a little later in life, or dogs that missed out on puppy classes and are now requiring a bit of help, we can discuss their needs and get them into the correct level of training. The most important part of the training is for the owner to understand the reasons behind the techniques used and realise why and how they work. The trainers are willing to discuss individual training or behavioural problems and look at these with the group or individually. The trainer will also assist with puppy socialisation and the prevention of problem behaviour occurring in the first place to make your dog much more fun to live with. As well as group training sessions, one to one training can be organised for basic training and early puppy advice and training, using positive reward based methods. You will be living with your dog for many years and it is important that you have a good bond and relationship with your dog. We can help you to teach your dog how to behave so you are not frustrated and cross with them and they know what is expected so you can all live comfortably and happily together! Mutleys offers a variety of Association or Pet Dog Trainer (APDT) Good Companion Awards - Puppy, foundation, Progress and Jubilee, just ask for details. Mutleys, based in Clifton, Bristol, has been running since 2005. A branch in Frampton Cotterell, North Bristol has been running since June 2016 and this year (2021) we have opened a new venue on the Hanham/St George border.

Nia Aikido Club

London

Aikido is a modern defensive Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba, referred to by many as O’Sensei (Great Teacher). Its emphasis is placed on spherical movement to create dynamic and explosive techniques that render an attacker harmless. Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury. Move like a beam of light; fly like lightning, Strike like thunder, whirl in circles around a stable center. - Morihei Ueshiba Morihei Ueshiba MORIHEI UESHIBA, AIKIDO FOUNDER, 1883-1969 What is Aikido Aikido is often translated as "the way of unifying (with) life energy" or as "the way through spirit and harmony". It operates on the principle or tactic of blending with an attacker's movements for the purpose of controlling their actions with minimal effort. The Aikido practitioner does not rely on muscle strength but concentrates the power of the whole body onto the weak point of an opponent, forcing him/her to cooperate using his/her own force and momentum. This attribute defines Aikido's effectiveness and beauty as a martial art. Several approaches to Aikido have evolved over the years. Today Aikido is found all over the world in a number of styles, with broad ranges of interpretation and emphasis. However, the core essential principles of the martial art remain consistent. WHY PRACTISE AIKIDO? Aikido is more than simply an efficient method of self-defense. In practice, there are various facets of Aikido - the power of focus and concentration of energy; the concept of blending and unified non-resistance; the awareness of self and others. Traditionally, Aikido is a form of Budo – a “martial way”. Unlike other arts, Aikido technique can be applied at varying levels of severity, from the most gentle controlling techniques to the most severe countermeasures. One question that people who practise Aikido are often asked is why they do it. Although many people think of Aikido as a martial art only for self-defence, it has a range of physical and mental benefits as well: Physical benefits of Aikido - Regular Aikido practice can, over time, improve: Balance Posture Flexibility Co-ordination Reaction speed General fitness Mental benefits of Aikido - Aikido also offers unique mental benefits through practice. Self-confidence Self-control Self-awareness Awareness of others Conflict management Stress management and relaxation

Characters Stage School

characters stage school

Bradford On Avon

Characters was set up in November 2010 by Moira Townsend Williams to provide opportunities for children and young people to obtain a performance arts training with a creative ethos. Moira is a producer and writer living in Bradford on Avon, who has also been a professional actor, (trained at Guildford School of Acting) as well as a casting director and theatrical agent. Besides producing shows for Characters, she has produced 15 live shows of her own show The Casting Couch in London’s West End and a TV pilot for Channel 4, and various other film and theatre projects including the launch for Salisbury based Women’s Theatre JUNO. Characters employs teachers and directors who are also working in the industry so that the experience your child receives is always relevant and up-to-date. Current members of the team include Maria Finlay, who has many London acting credits, who teaches and directs our Saturday Stage School at The Arc as well as Little Characters, and Trinity Exam groups, Emma Tierney who teaches/directs our Bath Characters classes, and Megan Ashton who runs our Little Characters group. Past teachers and directors have included Leanne Copley, choreographer and performance arts teacher from St Brendan’s Sixth Form College who headed up the recent partnership with St Brendan's Performance Arts Academy, as well as Tillie Bolton who now runs her own Theatre School TSPA in Bristol. Our Stage Company, which devises new plays for performance, was in 2017 led by award-winning Bristol director Dave Lovatt and Musical Director Helen Temmink. Past workshops have been led by many well known industry professionals including Penelope Wildgoose, a Stroud based award-winning actor/director, David Bond, head of performance at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Sophie Jacobs-Wyburn, who now runs The egg youth theatre in Bath,David Lane, a leading Bristol based director and dramaturge, and Tom Wainwright, who was recently writer in residence at Bristol Old Vic. The vision of Characters is to provide a training that as closely as possible emulates a drama school training, adapted for the various age groups. This not only gives participants a solid foundation in techniques and skills, should they wish to pursue a career in performance arts later on in life, but also develops team building, confidence and self-esteem which are all key to a child’s personal development and happiness – whatever they do in life. Because we are not a franchise, we can keep our fees affordable, and we will always work with parents to swop skills for fees so that our classes are accessible to all.
