Hafsa and Mariam two best friends who had great working careers in childcare struggled to find flexible care for their children. They represent a mixture of views from different specialities and areas across the industry making sure there is a variety of perspectives to help shape CABE’s unifying voice. CABE Patron Lord John Lytton BSc FCABE (Hon) IRRV FRICS In his role as patron of CABE, Lord Lytton acts as an influential figurehead, creating valuable partnerships with organisations across the globe through his extensive network of industry and Governmental contacts and assisting the Association in raising its profile and influence within the building and construction industry. Lord Lytton is a leading chartered surveyor and an active contributor to the House of Lords. He is chairman of the boundaries and party walls professional panel of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a Vice Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Excellence in the Built Environment as well as being newly appointed to the House of Lords Information Committee. He has been an Honorary Fellow of ABE since 1997, and CABE since its formation in 2014. Presidential Team Joseph Birt PCABE FCABE – President Joseph Birt worked for 22 years within Local Authority Building Control in various posts; the latter 12 years as Specialist Support Officer for a Cluster of Councils, which included responsibility for advising on fire safety aspects of the Building Regulations. He was, for ten years, a Director of the William Keown Charitable Trust, which champions equality in the built environment and celebrates the achievements of people with disabilities. He has been elected twice as Chairman of the Northern Ireland Fire Safety Panel. By Ministerial Appointment he served two terms on the Northern Ireland’s Building Regulations Advisory Committee (BRAC) where he contributed to the development of the current Northern Ireland Building Regulations. He has also served two terms on the Department of Communities, Historic Buildings Council. Joseph is a Chartered Building Engineer, who continues to be active within his local CABE Region; currently Treasurer and past Chairman of the CABE Northern Ireland Region’. He is now the Technical Director of FRSNI Ltd. Richard Smith VPCABE FCABE – Vice-President Richard Smith commenced his employment as a YTS Trainee in Building Control back in 1989 and has progressed his career to become the Head of Standards and Innovation and Research at NHBC where he oversees the delivery and implementation of NHBC's Technical Standards, Technical policy, Acceptance of innovative and non-traditional construction methods and leads the NHBC Foundation. Richard is also a member of The Building Regulations Advisory Committee and support a number of Sub Committees including new building broadband connectivity, Part M Working Group and Building Act 1984 working group. Richard Flynn CEng CEnv CWEM VPCABE FCABE – Vice-President Richard is an independent private practitioner trading as Flynn & Shaw, Chartered Building Engineers. As well as being a Chartered Building Engineer, he is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Environmentalist, Chartered Water and Environment Manager, Registered Building Surveyor and Certified Site Assessor. Richard is a recognised expert in the area of onsite wastewater treatment and provides a complete site suitability assessment, treatment system design, and certification of installation for onsite wastewater treatment systems throughout Ireland. Richard has been Chair of the CABE Membership and Professional Standards Committee (MPSC) since its inception in 2019 as well as member of the Southern Ireland Region committee of CABE. Stewart C McArthur BSc (Hons) PPCABE FCABE RICS Dip BC – Past President Stewart has 30 years’ experience in the house building industry. He has a degree in Fire Risk Engineering from Glasgow Caledonian University. During his studies he also attended seminars at Maryland University and had the privilege of being tutored by some of the most widely respected experts in the fire engineering sector. Stewart began his career in building standards before moving into the warranty sector. He also has recent experience as a site manager. This broad experience has given him a greater understanding of the house building industry from all perspectives. In 2013 Gavin was appointed Director of Building Performance at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) where he was responsible for a portfolio of BRE's globally leading services including BREEAM and CEEQUAL the world’s foremost environmental assessment methods for the built environment. In 2018, Gavin was appointed as Chief Executive of CABE where he works to help enable a more professional construction sector that works to create better, safer and more sustainable buildings that enhance people’s lives. Gavin was a member of the Building Regulations Advisory Committee (BRAC) of the UK Government from 2015 to 2022 where he served as Chairman of the Future Homes Standard Working Group. Jackie Macaulay – Chief Operating Officer Jackie is responsible for all aspects of the organisations operations and internal processing. Her remit includes compliance, legal services, HR, OD & change management, IT, facilities, PR & communications, membership processing and deputising for the CEO in his absence. Her experience spans a range of manufacturing, construction and not-for-profit organisations with her first Director position as HR Director for Electrolux in 2004. Jackie has worked across the UK, Ireland and internationally across Europe and Asia managing diverse and multi-disciplined teams. Richard Harral BA BArch FCABE RIBA – Technical Director Richard Harral is the Technical Director for CABE. He has previously worked as an architect in both public and private sector practice, and as a policy official in the Building Regulations Division of MHCLG between 2007 and 2014 where he oversaw introduction of policies on accessible housing, security standards, broadband and the national space standard for new homes. He was subsequently Head of Technical Policy in the period 2014-2017. He currently sits on the CIC Competence Steering Group, and chairs a number of competence working groups including on Designer and Architect Competence. He was Technical author for Flex 8670, the recently published British Standard on Competence for building safety in Built environment industries. Alison Duckles CBE – Professional Development Director Alison has worked in the Construction sector for over 24 years, predominantly with Laing O’Rourke. She previously held roles with the Chartered Institution of Waste Management and Eastern Group plc in the power sector. Our founder, Stine Dulong, quit her corporate lawyer job in 2013 to become a full time potter. For her, clay was a gateway into transformation. Not only did it become her career, and change the structure of her life on the surface, but it fundamentally shifted who she is and how she perceives the world. She had tried yoga and meditation, but it never “clicked” for her. Yet through pottery, she found a way into a slower, more mindful and joyous way of existing. Having experienced such a powerful transformation through working with clay, Stine decided that she had to share this magical material with the world, so she started offering classes at her studio. Little did she know that the demand would be so great that SkandiHus now consists of three studios, a team of 26 and more than 350 happy students every week. Bearing witness to the profound effects working with clay has on almost everyone who walks through the studio doors, is the greatest privilege of Stine’s life. When she isn’t busy teaching and running the business, she makes tableware for the likes of Nigella Lawson, Anna Jones and Tom Kerridge, and her work is in many high-end restaurants, including The Connaught Hotel, The Hand & Flowers and Nobu. When Stine first touched clay in an evening class in 2013, she felt like she had arrived home. Whilst she never intended to become a full-time potter, she decided somewhere along the way to trust the journey and continue to follow her heart no matter what. She is now a firm believer that the world would be a better place if everyone did more of what sets their soul on fire and that when we allow ourselves to follow our dreams, we indirectly give people around us permission to do the same. She often gives talks about following your passion and living a more present, slower and fulfilling life. She has recently signed with Rachel Mills Literary and will be writing a book about pottery and her journey. STINE’S WORK Stine’s work is inspired by a love for Scandinavian design in which beauty is radiated through light colours, the ample use of natural materials, minimalism and functionality. Like many Scandinavian designers before her, Stine believes that quality design should stylish and relevant to the modern human being by providing minimal distraction and maximum aesthetic value. Stine both throws and hand-builds her pieces, using a broad range of techniques to create her finished pieces. She also uses a wide range of clays and materials, but most of her pieces are made from reclaimed studio clay, as she is a firm advocate of minimising waste and our impact on the world. She finds great joy in making something beautiful from something once considered waste. When Stine is not busy making her own designs, and running the business, she teaches classes and events as she feels that she has been given this gift to share it with the world. She is slowly building the clay revolution, one ball of mud at a time.

I bet you’ve landed here because your dog's prey drive is driving you mad. You’ve probably asked everybody you know plus the gurus of Facebook – that’s what I did with my first high prey drive dog – and are no closer to answers than you were at the start. Do you know what? It doesn’t have to be hard. All you need is a bit of know how and I can give that to you no problem. I love high prey drive dogs. Prey drive is part of the template for a dog - AND our domestic dogs have been selectively bred to enhance some parts of it. I am on a mission to help you understand your dog's prey drive - and learn to see how you can work with it to make both of your lives better. In fact, I chose the breed of my first dog in large part because they are meant to have a low prey drive. It wasn't something I wanted to deal with. I avoided hounds, terriers, herding breeds, gundog breeds - and instead got myself a Bullmastiff. Do you know what? It didn't work. He would chase deer for long distances and he would kill and eat rabbits. And then he became aggressive toward other dogs. I started learning. I became a Tellington TTouch Practitioner and I spent 5 years at Bishop Burton College doing a BSc (hons) in Canine Behaviour and Training. My dog was transformed. No more chasing wildlife and no more being aggressive toward other dogs. So . . . A blonde collie cross dog stands in deep snow, looking at the camera. enter Cuillin. I was done with behaviour problems and wanted a dog who was going to be better at heelwork to music than my Bullmastiffs. Cuillin was a Collie cross and I had big plans for us. Until he reached a year or so old and started hunting. And then disappearing for hours at a time. There were lots of tears from me when that started happening. So I started learning again. I worked at it until I understood how to work with Cuillin so that he could do what he loved and I wasn't left waiting around for hours. I was hooked. A black and tan Cocker Spaniel sits in a wild spot surrounded by cotton grass. I went back to Bishop Burton to study again. This time for an MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Training. I was lucky that during first year of the course, Serendipity the cocker spaniel came into my life. I spent my time studying and carrying out research into prey drive in dogs while also practicing every single day with my glorious young high prey drive dog. I passed my MSc with distinction and a fire to share my wealth of knowledge about reward-based, effective and kind training for high prey drive dogs. Ethics in dog training are a key part of my business. Many years ago - long before I ever had dogs - I spent 4 years at Glasgow University getting an honours degree in Philosophy. That time helped me to see that ethics are so important.

Shackleford Village Hall started life as the Shackleford Institute, built in 1893 as ‘a private charitable club for the purposes of reading and recreation for its members …’. The Hall was opened by Lord Midleton of Peper Harow, who became its first president. The original brick-built Victorian building includes an open vaulted hall, with a stage and ‘Green Room’ and catering facilities. The building incorporates a self-contained cottage. In 1974 a Social Club was added but in 1995 a fire destroyed part of the building. It was rebuilt maintaining its Victorian features and with improved facilities. The main hall is named Pilkington Hall after a long-serving president and benefactor. In the early 2000’s the Social Club and the Hall were being used less and less and in particular the Social Club was no longer attracting sufficient interest to justify the running costs. The Hall was in daytime use as Acorns Nursery, but with minimal activity in the evenings and at weekends. In 2009, the constitution was revised and modernised, and the members agreed to transfer the assets to a newly formed charitable company limited by guarantee. The original objectives of ‘The improving of the conditions of life of the inhabitants of the Parish of Shackleford…’ are preserved in the current Memorandum and Articles. At the same time a decision was made to close the Social Club and relocate Acorns to the refurbished area previously used by the Social Club. This had the dual advantage of giving Acorns a dedicated space, allowing them to develop a permanent setting, and freeing the Hall for daytime use by other groups. The nursery now operates independently and the area occupied by the nursery is named the Brigstocke Room, in recognition of services to Shackleford and the locality by Sandy and Diana Brigstocke. The Cottage was also refurbished and established as a separate entity to the Hall and is now rented independently of the rest of the Centre. This restructuring of the constitution, and revised operation of the Centre, generated sufficient income to begin improving the facilities leading to more regular use of the Pilkington Hall, which is now widely used for a range of activities and the Centre benefits from an active program of continuous improvement. The Centre is in regular use by Acorns Nursery, St. Mary’s School, various clubs and classes, and residents of the surrounding area. We welcome new groups and look forward to seeing you. Quilting has been underway at the Hall for many years as can be seen in the picture above. The quilters meet every Friday and welcome new members. The Village Hall makes an excellent venue for clubs, classes, presentations and meetings and has full catering facilities for events of all kinds. Conveniently situated a few minutes off the A3 just south of Guildford in the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty, Shackleford Village Hall has all the charm of a traditional village hall but with modern facilities providing a warm and comfortable venue for a wide range of clubs, classes and events including Yoga, Pilates, Art Classes, Quilting and more. The hall is located close to the parish church of St. Mary’s, with easy access and ample parking.
