The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) is an independent charity working to benefit students and higher education, and one of the world’s experts in quality assurance. We are trusted by higher education providers and regulatory bodies to maintain and enhance quality and standards. We work with governments, agencies and institutions globally to benefit UK higher education and its international reputation. In England, we have two distinct roles, which we keep separate through an ‘ethical barrier’ or firewall. A ring-fenced team fulfils our role as the Designated Quality Body in England, providing reviews and advice to the regulator, the Office for Students (OfS). Separately, we provide services and advice to our member institutions in England, including support with quality enhancement activities. We do not provide any guidance to institutions in England on how to meet the regulator’s requirements. In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, there is no such separation of roles, and our quality enhancement and membership work is provided in concert with, and informed by, our quality assurance activities. We work closely with all higher education providers and the respective funders and regulators, in line with the policy and regulatory approach of each nation. Our UK-wide responsibilities include being the regulator of the Access to HE Diploma, which transforms lives by offering students from non-traditional backgrounds access to higher education. We also work internationally on behalf of our members and the wider UK higher education sector. We now welcome international members as well as those from the UK.

ABOUT US Wuntanara – meaning ‘we are together’ in the Soussou language from Guinea Conakry – is a collective of outstanding artists from West Africa and dedicated African drumming and dance students from across Europe. Master Drummer Souleymane Compo is the Founder and Artistic Director Wuntanara, and CEO of Wuntanara Ltd. Souleymane was born into the proud musical tradition in Guinea. As a young man he travelled to The Gambia, where he continued his training in the traditional arts with Guinean masters, in the famous Fatala Drum and Dance School. He soon began teaching African drumming and dance to students from all over the world. An accomplished dancer, he also became choreographer and lead dancer for the Fatala Ballet troupe. Souleymane moved from Africa to London in 2004. Since then he has been teaching and performing in schools, weekly classes, festivals and private events across the UK. He combines warmth and patience with great musical knowledge and skill. He is an inspiring teacher, as well as an accomplished performer. Wuntanara's lead dancer is Salif Camara Salif belongs to a family of Guinean artists, and began dancing at a young age. An exhilarating dancer, Salif has performed in some of the most acclaimed Guinean ballet troupes and teaches Guinean dance to student across Europe as well as in Guinea. Emma Scott born in Cornwall Emma enjoing a woodland eventThe beautiful surroundings that I was lucky enough to grow up in remain a constant source of creative inspiration for me, whether that’s the solitude and tranquillity of the woods or the open and beautiful seascapes. After achieving an art degree in fine arts and textiles finishing with a BA in fine art my creative processes initially had a textile based influence but rural and traditional crafts have always been a source of interest to me and I predominantly work in willow these days. I got involved with the restoration project of Mellingey Mill Willow Craft Centre in 2012 this is now where I am based and have an open studio/shop and where I run workshops. Although a lot of the work I do is still based out in the field you can find me in the shop a couple of days a week making and selling my work. Much of the willow I use for my work is grown here at Mellingey and after 5 years of management replanting my hard work is beginning to pay off and last year saw the first crop to be viable and large on a small scale to use in making most of my own products and in workshops. I find willow a great resource to work with and grow enough varieties to cover its wide ranging uses, from really fine basket willow to larger varieties that are perfect to harvest for hedges and fedges.

I have always had a big passion for art and design and always tend to apply that all important ‘creative flare’ in everything I do. My educational background includes studying Art and Design at College and subsequently, a degree in Multimedia Systems at University. As a professional Henna Artist I have been applying henna onto skin, in the form of body art, for several years. However, recently I decided to experiment with different types of material such as paper, glass and canvas. I was pleasantly surprised by the results, as the dark stain of the henna paste complimented the lighter backgrounds perfectly. The other advantage of this was that the designs wouldn’t fade overtime as they normally would when applied to the body. This is how I started out in my current venture and have gained a lot of interest and positive feedback from the people I’ve shown my work to. All my designs are totally unique and adaptable, and can be viewed at any angle, the owner can decide. So far, I have produced a range of work that is either framed or created directly on canvas. My aim is to create modern, affordable art with a traditional feel that appeals to a wide range of buyers from the general public to specialist collectors.

Have you always wanted to learn how to weave?  Sarah Ward, Founder of Lark & Bower offers a variety of online weaving workshops including 'off-loom weaving', rock weaving, paper weaving and also darning and visible mending. 'Off-Loom' weaving is essentially weaving without a loom, around found objects like wood, tiles or rocks, using needle and thread.  It's brilliant for first time weavers, as it helps us to understand the basics of woven structure, without the added complexity of the loom. These workshops are suitable for all ages and all levels, from total beginner, to seasoned weavers - so if you're thinking of taking up weaving, or just looking for a new direction to take your craft, these workshops are a great place to start! The main focus of the workshop is the simple twill, and from there, we'll try a dogtooth, and even a check! We'll play with colour, texture and pattern and discover the magic of weaving. It's simpler than it looks! As an environmental activist, the main focus of Sarah's work is to share knowledge through craft. She uses her woven work to advocate weaving as an art form, encouraging the learning and passing on of skills in traditional crafts, keeping the ancient craft alive but also raising awareness about waste and the impact of fast fashion on our planet.

We are passionate about enaging people of all ages in ecological issues, natural history and wildlife. We run Community Events such as Moth Breakfasts (opposite) and Community Mothing and have run courses for schools, youth groups, community organisations and home schoolers. We have a multitude of illustrated talks which have gone down a storm at local gardening clubs and Women’s Institutes. We even appeared as a guest lecturer at Birmingham University – examples are listed here The Nomadic Museum of Natural History is a combination of street theatre and education tool. Formulated out of an idea of a ‘Cabinet of Curiosity’ and the plethora of natural history items in our house it slowly became a 1m long transportable natural history museum. We have since taken in all over the country to festivals, events and private functions. For more detail click here Environmental Consultancy Our resident ecologist Tim has carried out a wide number of projects over the years. Primarily a botanist he has developed skills as an all round naturalist. He has been commissioned on work involving Newt and reptile relocation and survey work at Moredon Park, Swindon Bat monitoring on the Bats in Churches project, Herefordshire Meadow restoration projects in Peterchurch, Herefordshire Badger mitigation work at Snodhill Castle, Herefordshire A summary of his skills is available here Teaching Trees For over 20 years, Teaching Trees been connecting schools with local woodlands across England and Wales. We have been employed to run the programme for Herefordshire and Worcestershire which we have done since 2017. It is funded by the Royal Forestry Society and aims to connect children to woodlands and get them to understand the trees, wildlife and production of timber that are essential for all our health. For more details please visit their website. Traditional Crafts We can offer a range of traditional and modern crafts. However we are experts at introducing people to Wool craft and tour the country as the Woolly Circus. All aspects of wool are covered: wet felting, needle felting, weaving, spinning and preperarion of fleeces. We also offer Green Woodworking courses which include Whittling to make spoons and other items from greenwood with axe, knife and crook knife. We are adept at many crafts and in the past have run workshops in knotwork, origami, willow weaving, pewter smithing with cuttlefish, sewing, leatherwork, stone age craft, decoupage and home made toileteries. We are available to run craft activities at festivals, events, parties and groups. The Founder of the Tai Chi and Meditation Centre is Shifu Andy James (Wu Andao), who in 1984 gave up a career as a chartered accountant to teach fulltime. Shifu James was trained as a teacher of Insight Meditation (Vipassana) by the renowned Thai meditation master and author, Dhiravamsa. His first and main teacher in the Internal Martial Arts of Taijiquan, Baguazhang and Xingyiquan was Miss Rose Li ( see Lineage) Shifu James has studied medical and martial under Professor Jerry Alan Johnson and is a qualified Medical Qigong Therapist. He is also a Zen Shiatsu therapist. He is a member of the Forge Guild, an international association of trans-traditional spiritual leaders and teachers. Andy James is the author of The Conscious I: Clarity and Direction through Meditation, Ageless Wisdom Spirituality: Investing in Human Evolution and The Spiritual Legacy of the Shaolin Temple: Buddhism, Daoism and the Energetic Arts. Served as president of the Canadian Practitioners' Association of Asian Medicine and the Canadian branch of the Wudang Internal Martial Arts Association, vice-president of the Canadian Taijiquan Federation and director of the Canadian Kuo Shu (Martial Arts) Association. He was a member of the Canadian masters' demonstration team at the World Wu Shu Championships. Andy has been a passionate, interesting guest as well as a sensitive interviewer. He is now retired from the Tai Chi and Meditation Centre and offers his teachings at his retreat centre, Harmony Dawn. Although his time is limited, he does schedule media time throughout the year.
