Portsmouth

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, also known as BJJ, is one of the most popular and fastest-growing martial arts in the world. Exceptionally effective for hand to hand combat and self defence, BJJ is similar to a mix of Judo and Wrestling and relies on technique and leverage rather than strength and brute force. BJJ Lesson It's one of the most effective, well-proven, and well respected martial arts for person to person combat on the planet. Heavily relied upon in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), it's tried and tested, with its effectiveness having been proven beyond doubt in the UFC Ultimate Fighting Championships. It has a heavy focus on grappling, joint locks, choke submissions etc and especially ground fighting as this is where most fights end up! Great for Self Defence! Most fights and physical altercations end up on the ground. You don't see this in combat sports that concentrate on standing fighting such as boxing and kickboxing etc, as there is a referee to separate both combatants once the range (distance) between them closes down into wrestling range. In the real world, most situations quickly end up on the ground. BJJ Lesson Being able to take a single opponent to the ground and control them while you apply techniques that will render them incapacitated is a highly effective, tested, and proven fight strategy. But it's also equally beneficial to be able to prevent or defend yourself if taken to the ground against your will and also have the ability to return to standing again and escape if need be. Unlike many clubs that nowadays only practise BJJ's sports element, at Pure Art BJJ, we also practice the full syllabus of practical, easy to apply, and effective self defence techniques considered a fundamental component of the original art as well as incorporating contemporary self defence strategies and tactics. Fantastic For Fitness! A session of BJJ is physically demanding. The constant movement provides a fantastic workout and builds powerful functional strength as well as good cardio. The fluidity of motion and stretching it provides is also great for your flexibility. Highly Effective! BJJ uses live rolling, a highly addictive form of sparring similar to wrestling, as an important part of its training. Partners will attempt to control and apply submission techniques on each other while resisting, releasing them once their partner taps before any injury can occur. BJJ Lesson Due to the fact the art is grappling rather than strike based, partners can fully resist techniques allowing each other to test and experience using them for real without fear of causing injury. You will gain confidence and knowledge that the ability you have achieved now works for real. Due to this live practice method, practitioners can gain a very effective ability in a short time. Just like you wouldn't learn tennis without getting on a court and having a game, you cannot learn to fight without doing it. BJJ offers you a safe and practical way to do this. There is no doubting or imagining that what you have learned works with this martial art. Works Regardless of Size or Strength! BJJ uses leverage and science to allow a smaller person to overcome a larger person regardless of size, gender, or age. Instead of relying on muscle, strength, and brute force. Portsmouth Martial Arts Club Superb for Weight Loss! BJJ is an excellent form of exercise. You will burn lots of calories during a session and find yourself wanting to eat healthier due to the enhanced ability and energy this will give you both on and off the mats, and the positive lifestyle BJJ promotes. Way More Fun than Joining a Gym! BJJ provides exercise as part of an enjoyable activity rather than exercising for its own sake, which can quickly become repetitive and boring. So you're more likely to stick with it and get results. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class Training More importantly, it's also way more productive and rewarding as you are gaining a lifelong skill and ability, which may save your life while gaining fitness and enhancing your physique at the same time. It's also great for dealing with stress and gaining balance in your life. The positive life rewards of Jiu-Jitsu go way beyond gaining skill in fighting, and at Pure Art BJJ, we foster a positive, enjoyable atmosphere in all classes, which means you will leave feeling great! Does it actually work! Yes. Unlike all the kicking and punching the air or bags you may find in other martial arts, you will gain real experience of its use under live pressure and experience its powerful effectiveness for yourself within a few classes. Time is precious, so why waste it? Do I Need Anything to start? No, just wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a drink of water. Your first session with us is completely Free to try! Oxford

Oxford BSAC Scuba Diving Club is the award-winning Oxford Branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC). The branch was founded in 1956 – a few years after the BSAC itself, making it one of the oldest diving clubs formed in the UK. As you might imagine we have a rich history and some very experienced members. Our club is run entirely by volunteers. We train people to dive and snorkel but we also welcome qualified divers to join us (whoever they trained with). We organise regular diving trips to Dorset and inland sites. We run several trips a year to longer-range destinations – in the recent past, these have included the Red Sea, Gozo (Malta), Scapa Flow, Sound of Mull, Plymouth and the Isles of Scilly. We also have close relationships with other local BSAC branches including the Oxford University Underwater Exploration Group (OUUEG) with whom we often collaborate. The activities of the branch centre around three areas, the clubhouse, pool training and diving. We also carry a decent level of equipment and have a great hard boat moored in Weymouth – all of which help to make us a successful dive club which has been going for over 60 years. We are a mature club with a friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere. The branch has around 70 members from the Oxford area stretching from Bicester in the North to Didcot in the South and from Witney in the West to Aylesbury in the East. We even have some members who live here during the week and go home on weekends. We cover a good cross-section of Oxford society. Ages range from young children who snorkel to senior citizens that dive or who are social members. We are always happy to welcome new members, be they untrained novices, experienced divers or instructors – no matter who they have trained with. You will be made very welcome, so please enquire about joining Oxford BSAC.

Richmond

The 5Rhythms comprise a simple movement practice designed to release the dancer that lives in every body, no matter what its shape, size, age, limitations and experience. To find your dance is to find yourself, at your most fluid and creative level. While the practice itself is the essence of simplicity, it has the power to catalyse deep healing and creative expression. The primary teaching of this work is: if you put the body in motion the psyche will heal itself. The 5Rhythms are flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness. They come together to create the Wave, a movement meditation practice. Rather than having steps to follow, each Rhythm is a different energy field in which you find your own expression and choreography, thereby stretching your imagination as well as your body. Each Rhythm is a teacher and you can expect to meet different and sometimes unknown aspects of yourself as your dance unfolds and your practice of the Rhythms deepens over time. The Rhythms are the foundation of Gabrielle Roth’s body of work, a series of healing maps for the body, heart, mind, soul and spirit that provide a lifetime of self discovery and a path to awakening. What happens on the dance floor? In every class or workshop, there is always a wide range of experience in the 5Rhythms work – from first timers to certified Wave addicts. The teacher will be following the energy in the room. So, while the essential map is 5Rhythms, the teacher might take the class through the entire Wave or focus on just one Rhythm or one facet of a Rhythm. The Rhythms themselves are gateways to literally thousands of different movement landscapes. Like the body, they are alive and designed to catalyse the dancer’s movement expression in the moment. You are different every time you walk into the room, so is the group and so is your teacher. Therefore, each class holds unique possibilities.

Stafford

I first found yoga in 2007, while travelling Asia, and the physicality of the practice caught my interest right away (such as supporting my weak lower back at the time), but also to quieten my mind and centre myself through my adventures.   Soon after, I trained in Ayurvedic Medicine as well as Ayurvedic Massage and found a holistic way to combine Ayurveda, Hatha Yoga and modern practices into enhancing my everyday wellbeing, as well as teaching others how to do the same. I have immersed myself in many sound therapy sessions. The feeling you get from being surrounded by intense sounds and vibrations is of grounded serenity. This helped me thrive through this time, bringing stillness to my mind and body. I incorporate this sound bowl therapy into all my yoga classes, so you too can experience the benefits. I am based in Stafford, where I have formed a fun, cool and welcoming yoga community. My intention as a professional yoga instructor is to help students listen to their inner selves and find the courage to step out of their comfort zone. Just like playing an instrument or sport needs practice, so does yoga. Nobody will be able to do all the yoga postures in the first class, even as an experienced yoga teacher, I still need to practice. Yoga is more than just getting into a posture and stretching the body. Yoga teaches you to be present and shows you ways to calm the mind. It is not at all competitive.  On the Path of Mindfulness You may practice yoga as we do in the UK, to relax, stretch and become more flexible. But yoga can be more than that. When you truly get into it and take the time to focus on your breathing, within an extended hold of the pose (as we do in Hatha Yoga), you adjust, you feel, you listen, you focus.  A light bulb starts to shine somewhere in your mind, your endorphins take over, you start to surrender, you may smile, you become one with the present moment - that’s when the true magic occurs.   Being present is a lifelong journey in itself and something I am still focusing on daily. It’s not easy and it doesn’t happen overnight, but through yoga, mindfulness and gratitude we lean closer and closer to being ever so present.  This is something I bring a lot of focus to in my yoga classes. It helps us to feel what is happening right now - not what happened or will happen, but what is happening. Take a deep breath right now - what do you feel? You feel the gift of the present moment.    Smiling is mandatory in my yoga classes - as I do believe humour and fun are key to experiencing the present moment and to releasing fabulous uplifting hormones. Believe me: this approach has helped me through many tough times.  Yoga has been a life changer for me, in times of worry, anxiety, the lows and the highs…it’s provided me with the opportunity to reflect, go within and come out of those times feeling totally nurtured and ready to take on every single chapter. My only hope is that you also feel this from the yoga practice.  I offer in-person yoga classes in Stafford, for small groups or 1-2-1. I am also qualified to offer holistic coaching, Massage Therapy and chakra energy balancing.

Migration Museum

London

About the Migration Museum The Migration Museum explores how the movement of people to and from Britain across the ages has shaped who we are – as individuals, as communities, and as a nation. Migration is a pressing contemporary issue and is at the centre of polarised political and online debate. But there’s an underlying story of comings and goings stretching back many centuries. And this story goes to the heart of who we are today. Britain has thousands of museums, but none comprehensively focused on this important theme that connects us all. The time is right for a highly relevant, accessible visitor attraction that shines a light on who we are, where we come from and where we are going. From our current home in the heart of Lewisham Shopping Centre, we stage engaging exhibitions and dynamic events, alongside a far-reaching education programme for primary, secondary, university and adult learners. We have a growing digital presence and convene a knowledge-sharing Migration Network of museums and galleries across the UK. The story so far The Migration Museum was founded by Barbara Roche, who first made the case for a migration museum for Britain almost 20 years ago, stemming from her time as Britain’s immigration minister, and from visiting similar museums in other parts of the world – notably Ellis Island in New York. Barbara assembled a founding team of people from different professional backgrounds who shared her passionate belief that Britain’s migration history should be placed at the heart of our national story. Together, they began to scope what a national migration museum might look like. Sophie Henderson, a former immigration judge and barrister, came on board as Director in 2013. Between 2013 and 2017, the Migration Museum staged pop-up exhibitions and events and ran education workshops at a wide range of venues across the UK, including the Southbank Centre, the National Maritime Museum and City Hall in London, the Museum of Oxford, Leicester railway station, and the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh. From 2017 to 2019, the Migration Museum was ba

Kemble Training

Flying Training All flying undertaken by Instructors at Kemble Flying Club is categorised as training, whether it is a taster lesson or Trial Flight, a normal flying lesson, or one of our other experiences like ‘Pilot for a Day’. Whatever type of experience you decide to take with us there is a good deal of useful information for first time ‘pilots’ on the Trial Flight page. If this is appropriate for you please have a look here as I would like to think most of your questions will be answered. All flying training referred to can be taken in fixedwing or the flexwing aircraft. (See: Our Aircraft) Introduction Flying training is one of the most important aspects of what we do here at Kemble Flying Club. Whether you come to see us for a one off experience, for a series of training flights, or to complete a pilot’s licence we can, without hesitation, say this will be a rewarding, sometimes challenging, and, even a life changing experience! Of course some people come to us for conversion training, refresher training (we could call that advanced training) and for flying instructor courses. There is a magic about flying small aircraft, a thrill, it’s like we have cheated gravity to play in the sky. We have read and seen pictures of the pioneers of flight and the first powered flights were only a little over 100 years ago! We are constantly exhilarated by the flying experience, the feelings of buoyancy of the air, the spectacle of different cloud shapes and patterns and colours as the light dances around us. And, the views of the landscape, the masses of open spaces, woodlands, hills and rivers. From Kemble we only have to be upwards of 1,000ft above ground and we can see to the Welsh mountains to the west, the Malverns, and the Cotswold plateau stretching away to the north. We can see as far as Didcott Power Station to the east and Salisbury Plain to the south. You don’t actually have to take a ride into Space to see the World is a small place! Importantly training should be fun! You will learn so much more if you are enjoying it. At the same time Safety is our utmost priority and when you are on your way to becoming a fully fledged pilot then it will take some commitment and discipline.

Dharma-Zen Tai Chi Studio

dharma-zen tai chi studio

Tai Chi can help improve the balance and help reduce the risk of falling. In comparison to other exercises, including weight training, stretching, endurance training, and balance training, Tai Chi was the most beneficial exercise, reducing falls … ( The Journal of the American Medical Association , May 3, 1995, Vol 273, No 17, pp 1341 – 1347). Danny Lai is from Taichung, Taiwan. There, he learned many different kinds of martial arts, including Tai Chi, Hsing-Yi, Ba Gua, Tae Kwon Do and Shaolin. Tai Chi Punch Although each style of Tai Chi Chuan has its peculiar features, the five styles of Tai Chi Chuan something in common, they are: With a calm mind the performer breathes naturally. In peace and ease the performer moves lightly, softly, slowly and equally. The performer moves harmoniously and in a balanced way. The performer moves like a circle–graceful and perfect. The motion is slow and steady and strong strength (yang) and weak strength (yin) can be used in motions mutually. Tai Chi Chuan has attracted attention internationally. It has special functions in promoting health and preventing illness. To help the performer to concentrate their mind and to make their motions coordinate with their breath, music can be played to accompany practice. Flow with the sound of the musical instruments. In following the rhythms of the music, practicing Tai Chi Chuan will relieve stress and benefit health. Crescent Kick (Shuang Pai Chiao) The name Tai Chi comes from the Taoist symbol the West calls yin (black) and yang (white). This Tai Chi symbol represents two balanced opposites: black and white, sky and earth, fire and water, masculine and feminine, moon and sun. Feminine is the black or yin. Masculine is light or yang. The yin side of Tai Chi is like yoga, moving meditation, or chi kung. The yang side is the martial art – the practical application of the movements – using your power. Most often the yang side of Tai Chi is not taught. The healing benefits without the martial application is the yin without the yang. Through the movements of Tai Chi, one can set the mind and body in balance. It is not easy to do. You want to make sure that for every movement in motion (yang) or at rest (yin) your body is moving together. Through Tai Chi training, you can learn more about yourself and you can feel calm and peaceful all the time. It is a kind of martial art, but it is a gentle martial art. It is not for attacking, but has powerful self-defense applications.
