A video game based on the work of University of Aberdeen historians has been nominated for the 2022 BAFTA Scotland Awards, the biggest celebration of Scottish film, games and television talent. Strange Sickness, led by Dr Jackson Armstrong and Dr William Hepburn, is a digital narrative game which brings people face-to-face with life in Scotland during the Middle Ages. It is based on and inspired by the events, descriptions and people recorded in Aberdeen’s UNESCO-recognised Burgh Records, which University historians have spent the past decade painstakingly transcribing. The records contain unique details about how the town of Aberdeen dealt with the threat of the plague and the researchers used this as the basis for the game of interactive fiction. It is one of three nominations in the ‘Games’ category of the 2022 BAFTA Scotland Awards and will compete for the award against Hercule Poirot: The First Cases and The Longest Walk. BAFTA – the British Academy of Film and Television Arts - is a world-leading independent arts charity that brings the very best work in film, games and television to public attention and supports the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally. Through its Awards ceremonies and year-round programme of learning events and initiatives, BAFTA identifies and celebrates excellence, discovers, inspires and nurtures new talent, and enables learning and creative collaboration. Strange Sickness was funded by a Kickstarter campaign which attracted global backing, and development of the game was headed by Dr Hepburn, who created the concept for the game and wrote the story. The game’s mechanics were designed by game developer Katharine Neil while the game’s visuals were created by artist Alana Bell. Dr Jackson Armstrong led the Burgh records research on which the game is based and was also directly involved in the making of the game. He said they were ‘surprised and thrilled’ to learn that Strange Sickness had been nominated. “The BAFTA Scotland Awards celebrate and reward the highest achievements in Scottish film, television and games talent and we are beyond delighted to see Strange Sickness shortlisted alongside such prestigious talent. “Games are an amazing tool to help people imagine the past and the Burgh Records are an outstanding resource to help us understand life in the Middle Ages. To see a game using historical records recognised in this way is a real boost for our collaborative research efforts with the Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire Archives.” Dr Hepburn added: “The game allows players to immerse themselves in Aberdeen’s history, interact with characters from medieval society and make decisions which will shape their own story. “Katharine Neil and Alana Bell did an amazing job of bringing our research and ideas to life and the feedback we have received from players has been fantastic.”

ver many years of strict training, in Japan and the west, Daizan Roshi received Dharma Transmission and permission to teach in both the Rinzai and Soto lineages of Zen. He has also undergone training as an enlightenment intensive master with Lawrence Noyes, leading student of the creator of enlightenment intensives, Charles Berner. Daizan Roshi received inka from Shinzan Miyamae Roshi of Gyokuryuji, with whom he continues to study (see below). Upon returning from Japan in 2007, Daizan Roshi went on walking pilgrimage up the centre of the island of Britain from the south tip of the Isle of Wight to the north tip of Scotland, living solely on alms food. He met many of his students from different parts of the UK during this time. Daizan Roshi currently offers sanzen (‘interviews’ or training encounters with his students) at Yugagyo Dojo (Zen Yoga) in London as well as using Skype for remote students. Together with his students, he has established, “Yugagyo Dojo”, a Zen training place in London. Daizan Roshi was teaching at The Buddhist Society, the oldest non-sectarian Buddhist Society in Europe, until his retirement from the post in December 2011. His Zen study incorporated yoga practice. He has also studied yoga in Europe, America and Asia. He brings this wide range of yoga experience to sharing a practice that combines physical challenge with mental and spiritual development. He is registered with the Yoga Alliance at the 500-hour level and is registered with the Independent Yoga Network as a Yoga Elder with more than 5000 hours of successful teaching experience. Daizan trains yoga teachers to find an expression that is authentically their own and will bring them success when they teach. His knowledge and training in Zen gives him the background to guide you on your spiritual journey.

At the Aesthetic Training Academy, we don’t believe in a paint by numbers approach to injecting. We are passionate in providing our delegates with an understanding on how facial features interact with one another to allow you to treat each of your patients on an individual basis. The Aesthetic Training Academy is the first and only training academy registered with Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS). We are working together with HIS to improve standards and provide better quality care within aesthetic medicine. Getting Started in Aesthetic Medicine We recommend if you are new to aesthetic medicine you begin with our Getting Started in Aesthetic Medicine course. This is a 2-day course in which we spend one full day covering Botulinum Toxin treatments to the forehead, frown and crows feet areas and a second-day covering dermal filler enhancement of lips and reduction of nasolabial and mesolabial folds with dermal filler. We believe a 1-day fast track course simply does not give delegates enough time to feel confident in performing these aesthetic procedures otherwise. We are aware that it may have been some time since delegates have studied facial anatomy and physiology so we spend a portion of the day recapping this too and can recommend pre-course reading materials. Facial assessment is a key section of all of our training courses.
