Portland

Our courses designed for beginners and all levels of skill run annually, and are now in their thirty-seventh year. Courses are held in the open-air, stone carving & sculpture workshop in the heart of Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve and in the well equipped spacious Drill Hall Stone / Work / Space. Our Tutors are highly experienced in selecting freshly quarried stone for individual ideas, 3D sculpture, architectural forms, relief carving, letter cutting, stone masonry; and give one-to-one tuition in the development and completion of individual work. Working with freestone that can be carved in any direction informed by the pure quality of light throughout the day, reveals forms and surfaces that haven’t been exposed for 150 million years, creating a more powerful and visually informed work. Portland stone, the finest of carving stones, was once an ancient sea, formed from pure sunlight interacting with calcium carbonates in sea water. Covid 19 and social distancing Courses take place in socially distanced workshops, with reduced numbers and allocated tool sets. We have hand sanitiser, face coverings and cotton gloves, but encourage people to bring their own. Protective glasses are available for purchase. Note: Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust (PSQT) reserves the right to change details of course dates, and course content. QUICK HISTORY TO BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU Originally coming from Gracie family, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu started gaining mainstream popularity after first UFC tournament in 1993. Won by Royce Gracie - 3 fights all won by submission. 30 years later it is one of the fastest growing sports worldwide and the sport is now practised and taught as part of the school curriculum across Abu Dhabi along with police forces adopting it for its versality and control. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) enables a smaller player to utilise leverage in order to subdue and submit a stronger opponent. This was the founding element unique to BJJ when it was first envisaged by Helio Gracie whom many consider to be creator of what modern Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is today. All levels are welcome here at our gym in Edinburgh, you will be training with mixture of fellow beginners and more advanced players with the primary goal being to build a foundational understanding of the positional elements that are vital to BJJ. The variety of techniques covered include a full range of self defence and martial arts movements focused efficiently and safely controlling an individual. Your fitness and overall strength will be vastly improved regardless of any prior training due to the unique and fun positions taught. In addition to this you will learn how to submit your opponent with limb/arm locks and choke-hold techniques. The most important lesson you will learn from the start will be how to safely takedown/control an opponent from standing all the way to the ground, this includes learning how to "breakfall" - a set of techniques that allow a person to transition from standing to the ground without fear of injury.

Thanks for taking the trouble to find out about my music school! Let me tell you about it… We take students at any level, whatever your goals are – be it just wanting to play around the campfire, jamming at your local pub, playing local gigs or touring the world! We’ve made it happen for all these aspirations! I had the idea of founding a music school when giving lessons to drum students – I love imparting knowledge and skills and seeing them progress – it’s my passion. I previously taught privately and at other establishments and enjoyed encouraging students to discover the joy of playing and developing enthusiasm for music as a whole. The music teachers at G.O.T. have been carefully selected with these values in mind and all have a similar attitude to mine when it comes to music. Our school’s motto is: “We love music; we love teaching.” and all our music teachers are very passionate about music as of course am I. Our music tutors are drawn from a mixture of professionals, with varied experience in both the teaching and performance fields. Your teacher will be able to relate to students with any level of experience and see just what is required in each individual situation, from the classroom, to the stage, to the recording studio. From beginners to intermediates, from established professional musicians to singers, the school’s main objective is to enhance your ability and performance. We endeavour to make your music learning process an enjoyable and memorable experience which will enthuse you. Please take a look around our website for a better insight into the kind of experience you will have with us. We look forward to meeting you soon!
