London Lit Lab

london lit lab

We believe writers can learn a huge amount from each other. We set up London Lit Lab to share our writerly experience, knowledge and inspiration with up-and-coming writers. Since 2016, we have been designing and teaching our own London Lit Lab courses, and mentoring writers of both fiction and non-fiction. We also teach creative writing courses at other organisations including the British Library, Riba, Mslexia, Arvon Foundation, St Mungo’s, Bath Spa and Birkbeck universities, Writers & Artists and Google. Lily Dunn Lily Dunn is an author, mentor and creative writing teacher. Her first novel, Shadowing the Sun, was published by Portobello Books and her debut nonfiction, Sins of My Father, A Daughter, A Cult, A Wild Unravelling, a memoir about the legacy of her father’s addictions, was published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson in March 2022. You can find her personal essays in Granta, Hinterland, MIR Online, The Real Story and Litro, and she is a regular writer for Aeon. She is in her final writing up year of her doctorate at Birkbeck, University of London, and is interested in how to integrate the therapeutic power of writing with literature. She teaches creative writing at Bath Spa University and co-runs London Lit Lab. I’ve attended other courses, but this has been by far the best!’ Eva ‘Lily has helped me uncover an unstoppable and undeniable urge to navigate and plot a course through my memories.’ Mia ‘Lily Dunn was exceptional. She knows her material well and delivered it confidently and in accessible chunks to a diverse group of writers and learners. I would do a continuation of this course if one were to be made available.’ James ‘I would like to thank Lily for being such a wonderful giving person and tutor. I really felt that she held the space well for the participants, which is so important considering the nature of the course. Lily was brilliant.’ Denise

Field Breaks Art

field breaks art

Chesterfield

Field Breaks started out in the Autumn of 2007 to provide a selection of professionally tutored illustration workshops in the Peak District. This followed the demise of similar workshops in the area and filled a much needed gap for people wanting short affordable art breaks in botanical illustration and landscape painting. Such was the demand for this provision that over the following years the programme has been extended to include a greater selection of courses and venues, along with a growing number of specialist professional tutors. 2020 and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic saw great challenges to all small businesses, including Field Breaks, with courses rescheduled for safer times. This was an opportunity however for founder member Sue to think seriously about her achievements, goals and ambitions, and after some deliberation decided to pass the business on to fellow artist Hazel. Along with many happy memories of running Field Breaks, Sue is enjoying the opportunity to start new projects. With the handover, Hazel decided to revitalise the old website - "I'm re-dressing the shop window while it's quiet!" Following suggestions from her peers, this also gave her the opportunity to re-think and amend the name from "Field Breaks" to "Field Breaks Art", which lends more focus under the artwork umbrella. We hope you like it! After the extended lockdown, Hazel added a new range of on-line mini workshops in the Spring of 2021, which were a lovely way to keep connected with other artists and share ideas. From July 2021 we were once again able to offer in-person workshops so the focus was to deliver quality tutor-led courses while maintaining a level of safety, including reduced class numbers to enable social distancing. In 2022 we are pleased to be able to offer another full programme of workshops in drawing, painting, botanical illustration, natural history, landscape, abstract, and mixed media including textiles and craft workshops in batik, jewellery making, lacemaking and felting. Please click on the Courses button to see a listing of all our 2022 workshops. Materials are provided for many of the workshops with a list of what to bring to workshops under the course details. We look forward to meeting you for a wonderful year of art and crafts in 2022.

Colchester,

In 2016, I began offering workshops in my studio, located just outside of Coggeshall and a few miles from Colchester. The converted barn provides a creative and supportive hub where I teach groups of up to twelve. Many of my structured textile workshops are taught across one or two days, but I do provide longer, design oriented textile courses and I mentor several groups on an ongoing basis. As my background is in creative textiles all the workshops I offer both in the studio and as a visiting tutor involve free motion embroidery with a design approach. More recently I have begun to take on other textile tutors and I now can offer a much larger range of textile courses including dressmaking, pattern cutting, felting, modern patchwork & Quilting as well as hand embroidery and decorative textiles. As well as textiles I have expanded the workshop itinerary and now offer illustration, lino printing, fused glass and silver clay jewellery on a regular basis with local, fabulous tutors. I hope that regardless of what experience level you have, you will still find something to suit you. So whether you are a beginner or more advanced in your chosen craft, take a look at the full range of workshops available. If you are unsure as to whether you will be able fully participate in a class, then simply get in touch and I would be happy to advise on what is best for you to do. While the majority of the workshops available through this site are based at my studio, I do travel and teach regularly in other local venues and I am happy to go further a field. This allows me to reach more students and collaborate with others, which is something I love to do. I offer a range of structured one and two day workshops to beginners through to more experienced in machine embroidery. Do get in touch if you are a Guild or textile group to discuss your groups requirements and I am a happy to send you a list of workshops I offer. Back to the studio – the current range of workshops will grow over time and I hope to continue offering a wider variety of subjects so if there is something you are interested in but can’t see listed, get in touch! If I have something in high demand, I will do what I can to arrange a workshop around this.

Mapp of London

Emma and I wear many hats: from designer and photographer to maker and workshop tutor. One of my first passions was photography, strongly inspired by my father and my uncle, who were both talented amateur photographers. Growing up in Namibia and South Africa, I remember my dad always having a camera in hand, recording our childhood or the stunning African landscape. As a teenager I poured over magazines like National Geographic, Drum and Life, feeling transported to distant lands through the incredible photography. I longed to leave school and travel the world, taking my own photographs. Eventually I got the chance to travel to many wonderful countries. But life got in the way and instead of pursuing my creative passions, I ended up working as a lawyer in London. The 2009 recession was a turning point in my life. Having been made redundant from my job in the City, I resolved to take the plunge and pursue a career that would make me feel more fulfilled. I decided to return to my childhood passion of photography. It’s a decision I’ve never regretted as it has led to some amazing opportunities, from co-founding the London Photo Festival to having my work featured in publications including The Telegraph and the Metro. It’s also taken me in directions I never could have anticipated. My frustration at having to juggle a bulky, unattractive camera bag as well as a handbag led me to create my own range of stylish camera bags and accessories. Over the past few years, I’ve become increasingly interested in sustainability, with an emphasis on using eco dyes, natural resources and recycled material. I now run classes along these principles which have been featured in Country Loving and Breath magazines. These take places in my she-shed in Twickenham and range from Christmas wreath making to cyanotype printing – “nature's printing press” – a more eco-friendly form of photography that is particularly effective at capturing texture. As a result of the pandemic, I’ve also started selling DIY creative kits so that you can try these crafts out in the comfort of your own home. It’s been gratifying to see these becoming so popular – my Christmas bauble kit appeared in the Metro and The Sunday Telegraph. To see more of what I’m up to or to hear about the latest classes, follow me on social media.

Sew Creative

sew creative

Altrincham

Hi I’m Kate, I set up Sew Creative in 2016, however a lot of my customers are often surprised to hear that I haven’t always loved sewing - in fact I even paid one of my friends to sew my Year 7 Textiles project for me, then ditched the subject as soon as I was allowed in the following year! I eventually learnt to sew when I made the decision to study Fashion Design in Manchester. After my degree I worked in the fashion industry in both London and New York, before heading back up North to train to be a Textiles teacher and settle in Altrincham. Whilst teaching, I started to advertise sewing classes - it was originally just a way to earn a little extra money. I started on a table in Hobbycraft with a couple of old machines and some bits and pieces from my personal fabric stash. I sat there for several weeks, with no customers or interest, and was about to give up when Sue (now a member of staff!), my first ever customer, approached me asking if I’d teach her how to make her own patterns - and Sew Creative was born! Alex MANAGER Alex joined the Sew Creative team having left teaching in February 2020, just two weeks before the first National Lockdown! When she was a teacher, she taught social science, so sewing was a bit of a change! Alex sews most of her own clothes and can usually be found wearing at least one me-made item in store during the week. Alex teaches our adult classes as well as our teenagers. She is also the shop’s manager, so if you need anything, she is always happy to help! You can find her on Instagram @sewalexfaye "My favourite thing about being able to sew is making things that fit me properly. I'm almost 6ft tall so finding ready to wear trousers and dresses the right length has always been a challenge. Now I just make them to fit my body rather than the other way around!" Dawn TUTOR Dawn has been with us at Sew Creative for two years now and has become the heart and soul of the shop. Dawn is our resident neat-freak so she keeps us all nice and ship-shape. Dawn has been sewing for years and regularly makes herself gorgeous dresses and coats. Dawn can be found teaching our adults on a Tuesday and our Saturday classes. She is warm of heart and always up for a good natter! Jayne TUTOR Jayne joined Sew Creative in September 2020, in the midst of a Global Pandemic has has taken the rollercoaster ride like a true pro. Jayne’s career has been in lingerie design and she has worked with some of the biggest names in the biz! Jayne sews her won clothes, and loves making tailored trousers, she is always the picture of sophistication! Jayne works most weekdays and every other Saturday, teaching our kids and adult classes. She also teaches our Monday night adult lesson! George CHIEF EXECUTIVE George is the newest and most adorable member of the Sew Creative team. He’s not old enough to sew yet, but can often be found in the shop sporting a mum-made outfit. You’ll also find his full modelling portfolio on Instagram, where you are guaranteed a regular dose of cuteness. He keeps Eric and Dotty very busy and despite being so small, is always the centre of attention! We’re all convinced he’ll be the next Patrick Grant! Eric HEAD OF SECURITY Hi, I’m Eric. I can often be found guarding the front door at Sew Creative. While I might look big, tough and scary, I am actually quite a lovely chap. I love treats, cuddles, any food that you might be eating, and more cuddles. Please feel free to pick me up and cuddle me, instead of doing any sewing. I look forward to meeting you soon. Thank you. Dotty THE DUCHESS Hi, I’m Dotty. I am pretty shy, but if you’re quiet and gentle I will come for some cuddles. I can often be found sleeping in my basket, or following my Mum around - just to make sure that she’s still there! Volunteers and Party Facilitators In addition to our part and full time members of staff, Sew Creative also has a team of amazing volunteers who help us out every week. Lisa, Sue , Catherine and Liz can be found lending a helping hand in our kids and adults classes, alongside some of our teen sewers who give up their precious weekends to work with us! If you book a party with us, you will almost certainly meet our lovely party facilitators. Evie and Daisy have been sewing with us for years and as they have grown up, have proven themselves to be very capable seamstresses. Both ladies are excellent with kids and adults alike!

Healthy Human

Leeds

Healthy Human was first established in 2018.  At the time both Nicky and Alison were in practice and looking for a partner to help them create a 360 method to supporting clients back to better health and happiness. In 2019 they found each other and 'Healthy Human 360' was born.  As lockdown hit Nicky and Alison decided to move their programmes online so that anyone could access them, despite the current restrictions.  This move turned out to beneficial in even more ways, for example for those who didn't live in the region where Alison and Nicky practice, for clients with busy lives who needed to fit a programme in around their schedule.  An online and on demand course was giving clients total flexibility to go at a pace to suit them and their lives.  They enjoyed that they could repeat or dip back into lessons as often as they liked; and for some the icing on the cake was they didn't have to expose themselves to a gym or weight watching club, which can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming or scary.  You're in good hands   Nicky and Alison's evidence based health programmes are crafted from years of experience and specialist knowledge.  The 360 method ensures a higher success rate; with easy to follow and progressive steps, clients are able to move from being stuck and unhappy to a better place of health, in better shape, and with a whole new mindset.   Both partners also continue practices in their respective areas of specialism.  For a bit more of an insight into your therapists, Alison and Nicky, read on... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALISON BRAITHWAITE MSC, CIPD Alison has been working in the wellbeing sector for nearly 20 years and is a qualified holistic therapist and life coach, with a deep understanding of mental health having worked in that sector of the NHS since 2007.  During her time with the NHS Alison has provided coaching and mentorship for numerous NHS staff within the Yorkshire and Humber region, as part of a volunteer scheme run by the NHS Leadership Academy. In her practice and courses she combines traditional coaching with a range of holistic therapies (including Reiki and aromatherapy) and with psychotherapy approaches (including meditative hypnosis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)), this is both powerful and unique.   Alison qualified with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in 2003 as a trainer, and today is an experienced trainer, facilitator, and course designer.   Continuing to keep a presence in mental health, wellbeing, equality and diversity; Alison holds a part time position within the NHS, working across the country's health and care system as the Deputy Director for a small and impactful team called Thrive by Design [https://www.thrivebydesign.org.uk/] You can also take Reiki and crystal courses with Alison through the British Reiki Circle [https://british-reiki-circle.cademy.co.uk/] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NICOLA SAINTY DIP.
