I've always had a love for paper products - buying a new diary was the hightlight of my school year and scraps of wrapping paper, sticker sheets, and vicotorian die cuts were treasured in old shoeboxes to reuse some day. I've always been drawn to kitschy imagery, glittery ephemera and colourful, quirky illustrations - looking back at my younger self, I can totally see why I do what I now do! After years of working in the corporate environment I decided to chase my bigger dream - running gooseglitters fulltime and show the world what beauty we can find in those old, vintage papers. It has become my mission to save as many secondhand books as I possibly can so you can often find me wondering around carboot sales and flea markets. Making new art from these old, used, sometimes ripped and stained, scribbled on, gorgeous papers makes me truly happy. Reusing and repurposing what is already with us and celebrating the life these books have lived, the conversations they've been part off, the households they've lived in: I seriously believe they need to be seen again. What makes me almost happier than creating collages myself is introducing others to this beautiful craft - have a look on my workshop page for more information. Maggi and Sarah created two projects to engage teenagers during the summer holidays, encouraging creativity and the development of new skills. The pack included a hard-backed sketchbook with a workbook of suggested art based activities, also Derwent Arts kindly donated some drawing equipment. The second project included a fully illustrated instruction booklet, coordinated fabrics, ribbons, needles and threads to create a decorative length of bunting, which could be customised with applique lettering or imagery. The scope of these projects could reach beyond the original pack and the summer holiday period, inspiring children to consider further individual projects. The quality of the pack and its learning materials encourages young people to work independently and the workbooks encouraged recipients to explore their own personal projects. The packs also contain Crafts Council project ideas to inspire children and teenagers, and support material for those who may wish to embark on the Arts Awards scheme. ‘Recreate Make’ intend to develop an Arts Award offering in the near future. With the help of the West Cumbria Learning Centre, Maggi and Sarah were able to distribute projects to 38 young people across West Cumbria who it was felt would find them beneficial. We gave the packs out during the summer holiday of 2021 to help additional homeschooling ideas for the arts. They were given to children from Wigton to Whitehaven, the majority centred around the Workington area.

Bauer Academy was founded by Courtnay McLeod, a news broadcaster and academic, in 2014. Courtnay had seen that traditional education was in many instances failing employers and learners. She set up the Bauer Academy inside Bauer Media, initially to create a talent pipeline for Bauer’s multi-platform media business in the UK. The Bauer Academy grew rapidly, launching partnership programmes with The Big Lottery, The Rank Foundation, the European Social Fund, and The Prince’s Trust, amongst others. The learners on these programmes are given access to Bauer Media’s experts and resources to learn practical skills like content production and creative writing, as well as all-important employability training. In 2016, The Bauer Academy was accepted on to the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers. Apprenticeship Standards can be introduced to develop and increase skills in existing employees as well as new entrants, and our team have developed a smart, flexible and collaborative delivery model that has changed the language of Apprenticeships. The Bauer Academy’s work on diversity was featured in an Ofcom report and video, and has been showcased at an event we hosted at Westminster for MPs and leaders in education. We have introduced new programming roles within Bauer Media’s radio business, that specifically targeted and hired from under-represented female groups. The Academy’s contribution to tackling diversity issues is genuine, and creates not only a positive impact but genuine change within the media and other industries.

Thomas has been an upholsterer for over thirty years, having studied furniture production at High Wycombe College, leading to a lifetime of practising traditional upholstery. Thomas and his team are based at the Old Maltstore, a fine 17th Century malt store on quiet lane in the heart of Knighton. Thomas is a certificated member of the guild of Traditional Upholsterers as well as having a City and Guild qualification for teaching adults. Thomas initially practised in the Lake district and then for the last twenty-five years has practised in Knighton, a beautiful border town in Mid Wales. Having restored furniture, and run courses in this beautiful area, operating first from the barns at The Upper House, Discoed, home to John Nethercott & Co the fine furniture makers, and then in several local village halls, he established a centre for practicing and teaching upholstery at The Old Maltstore. Most weeks will find a bustling enthusiastic bunch of upholsterers, young and old, skilled and learners, battling over their projects. Thomas’s upholstery work for clients includes furniture from the 17th century onwards, including fragile historic pieces and contemporary traditional furniture. His courses are suitable for all and he is happy to give advice about the type of project that will be right for individuals. He gives lots of tailored support to ensure projects are completed to a high standard. He can also recommend local accommodation in the town for those wishing to stay.

Solo Training Systems provides Internet-based training courses for Asbestos Awareness, Office Ergonomics, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and WHMIS. All Solo Training Systems courses are written in a format that is easy to read and is consistent. Each course is formatted into a series of Chapters, with each chapter consisting of a Learning Module followed by Review Questions. Students control the speed at which they go. We usually see the world as a narrow-angle view of the horizontal plane; our eyes, our entire design are optimized for living in a flat plane five to six feet off the ground. Looking Up provides an all-encompassing, vertical view that questions that anthropocentric basis. I was photographing in Paris, exploring my interest in architecture when I became fascinated by the outlines of the tops of the buildings against the sky. They formed shapes and contours that I had missed all the other times I had passed by the same places. Not only do we seldom look up, but it is also difficult to see in many directions at the same time. In time came a more profound realization–that in general a photograph can break many of the limits of human visualization of the world. By looking upward and taking in a wider view, the scene changes radically from what we normally experience. As I started capturing these images, momentum built. I kept being surprised that I could create an equally true image of a scene that was radically different from the one you see with your eyes at the same spot. As this work evolved, I’m taking that underlying theme in multiple directions. I’ve photographed at many locations capturing some of the variations that create a distinct place. Even when one looks straight up, unable to see whether there are patisseries or souks, églises or mosques, the differences are striking.

My background is in social justice work and capoeira Angola, the combination of which has taken me to complete a PhD in anthropology and to live for several years in Latin America. I came to yoga around 2007 in my early twenties, but it was when I was living in a particularly challenging context, as I accompanied human rights defenders in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, that I developed my own daily yoga and meditation practice. This sadhana (practice) became my inner refuge, and the fire for my resilience, as I witnessed and denounced the injustice experienced by those around me. I honestly felt I would not have been able to deal with some of the situations we experienced, without the inner equilibrium, peace and strength I was able to cultivate daily on my mat. It was this experience, and the desire to make yoga more accessible to many more of the people who could most use these tools for self-and community-care and resilience, that drew me to teach. Following this call, I completed my 200hr Yoga Teacher Training in 2017. In 2018 I participated in two transformative 100hr immersions with my dear friend and teacher, Bex Tyrer, at the Yoga Barn in Bali – Yoga Philosophy and You, and Body Image, Identity and Yoga, which had an emphasis on yoga activism and unwinding the feminine aspects of the practice.
