The experienced staff at DLC Training in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, have been providing high quality, certified safety training courses for over 25 years. Our company was started by a group of instructors who wanted to do something different: focus on smaller, more responsive classes, and provide important, but less popular and underserved courses. As well, one of our key goals was to provide a training environment for students to learn at their own pace. Things have evolved over time. We have taught courses that are near and dear to the hearts of our instructors, and have allowed instructors to develop and perfect their courses and teaching skills. Along the way we tried not to reinvent the wheel. We’ve become certified Canadian Red Cross training partners and work with the Canadian Safety Council to train our defensive driving, babysitting and home alone courses. We maintain high standards by having actual teachers help do the training. Our director of training has 2 Masters of Education degrees. Early on we realized that there was a need for people to be able to acquire their certifications or licensing in many fields. This led us to becoming a partner with Prometric, a world leader in technology-enabled testing and assessment solutions. We have thus created a computer lab to allow for a secure proctored environment. We went one step further and started another lab for others.

At EarthCraftuk we have over 12 years experience delivering a variety of nature based programmes including: Forest School Leader Training, Woodland Skills Continued Professional Development Workshops, school visits, youth accredited engagement programmes and experiential Forest School programmes; witnessing first-hand the transformational effects experiences in the natural world can have on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of all participants, and the fulfilling career paths it can often open up for adult participants. At a time when we on average spend 90% of our time indoors, our work at Earthcraftuk is driven by the evidenced impact of being in nature. Concern surrounding underachievement of young males was brought into sharp focus in 2007 by the independent REACH report. Sponsored by The Home Office, The Department for Communities and Local Government and The Department for Education and Families, the report explored the costs associated with the problems that can arise from a disadvantaged socio-economic background, in this case specifically for young black males. These costs are associated with over-representation in the Criminal Justice System and reduced gross earnings and taxes associated with educational underachievement. They are estimated at £808 million a year and could amount to £24 billion over the next 50 years if the underlying issues are not addressed. From a working-class background himself, Clive attributes his corporate career success to hard work and maintaining a positive attitude. A key finding of the REACH report was a lack of positive male role models, particularly black male role models, in the media and the lives of young men. Clive knows from experience that the socio-economic gap to success can be bridged – he has held a number of senior level HR positions, is a company director and was awarded an OBE in 2010 for his contributions to the REACH report and the workplace mediation industry. Thus his involvement in the REACH report, together with his own personal experience, has inspired the development of the Bridge Builders Mentoring Scheme.

We started work here in New Cross in the year 2000 when we were set up as St James Family Learning Centre by the Southwark Diocese Board of Education and the London Borough of Lewisham to address issues of inequality in education South London. Since then we have we have supported hundreds of families to have better chances in life by providing high quality early education and family learning activities. Over the years we have worked in partnership with Children’s Centres, local schools and other voluntary organisations to provide activities that promote lifelong skills and a love for learning.
