The key to success in education and the workplace is to be surrounded by inspiring and competent people who can give you the tools you need to reach their level, as well as the resources to do so. Our aim is first of all to ensure that the children know and understand what they need from the curriculum to pass their SATS, GCSEs and A-levels in order to satisfy the requirements of the education system. Yet more importantly to we seek to braoden their minds – to get them to want to learn and love learning by putting them in an environment with highly educated, motivated and intelligent teachers who have been successful in education and the workplace. Teaching staff include a mixture of highly qualified teachers, graduate students and other professionals who are keen to encourage children from all, and especially disadvantaged, backgrounds in to their professions such as engineering, the sciences, law and writing. We take those who are not professional teachers intentionally because many children would not otherwise be exposed to such high level professionals in their day to day lives, and these motivated, successful people have a wealth of specialist knowledge not taught in schools. We hope the children will be inspired by these people. Examples of what we have done outside of the curriculum include training children for the Maths Challenge which can eventually lead on to the Maths Olympiad and introducing some very basic ideas from number theory. One of our teachers was a philosophy graduate and tried teaching basic propositional logic and reasoning skills. Just before the last term ended, we started a program of reading classic English literature in the oldest classes and initiated a debating club. We also have an ambitious program in development to organize work experience and internships at big city firms, engineering companies and civil service institutions to show children what they can achieve if they put their minds to it. Finally, we want members of the community involved. They might teach, or act as classroom assistants or offer work experience or supervise behaviour – anything that gets parents involved with their children's education.

Living Song exists to empower Young Artists and build communities through singing. We challenge limiting assumptions about what all young people can achieve, put young leaders centre stage and create innovative lifelong learning opportunities for all, insisting on diversity and inclusion in their widest sense. In August 2017, Living Song became a Community Interest Community (CIC) to enable us to build wider partnerships with Newham Council and other organizations, develop our funding steams and to create more opportunities for young people and communities to shine through singing. An advisory board was appointed, and we have continued to go from strength to strength. Who Are We? The company is directed by an Executive Director, with a board of two Non-Executive Directors and a team of advisors from across a wide range of music performance and education contexts. We have a Youth Board of five young people aged 16 – 25 who meet regularly to discuss and advise of relevant issues for them. We work with a range of tutors, artists and music practitioners, identified for their bespoke skills and experience for each project. Who Do We Work With? We work with schools and pupil referral units, community organisations, music education hubs, libraries, local authorities, commercial organisations, businesses and a range of community singing groups and choirs. What We Do Living Song has recently reviewed its work programme to see how it can be streamlined to maximise our impact. During the next 18 months – two years we will focus our attention on delivering three core programme areas which are: A Young Artist apprenticeship /’future leaders’ programme Delivering workshops in schools and the wider community A tailored Living Song Choral Music Experience (CME) These work areas are outlined in more detail below. Although distinct projects, the three areas of work overlap and reinforce each other, for example, a core element of the young leaders’ programme is the delivery of workshops in schools or for the wider community, and a handful of participants will be chosen to join Living Song’s CME course. Penicuik High School is a co-educational, non-denominational High School serving Penicuik and the surrounding area within Midlothian. The current school building with its imposing frontage has been on its present site since 1937 and the school has a reputation for offering a wide and stimulating curriculum and supporting young people to achieve academically, socially and culturally. Amongst some of its famous alumni are: Sir James Hamilton (the first Dux of the school), the designer of the Concorde’s delta wings, Scotland’s Grand Slam captain, Jim Aitken, Football internationals Craig Paterson and Billy Kirkwood, former Chief executive of NHS Scotland, Malcolm Wright, celebrity stylist to the stars and royalty, Denise McAdam RSM, Rosemarie McIlwhan, Director of the Scottish Human Rights Centre. We are equally proud of the many young men and women who have passed through our doors and are now making valuable contributions both locally, nationally and internationally. Many of our current students have parents and even grandparents who attended the school and this link to the past is important to our ethos. One of the key aims of the school, supported by its current PRIDE values is to develop all our young people and provide the best education possible so they are able to become productive and fulfilled citizens who progress into positive working lives and careers. In order to do this we need to work in partnership with all parents/carers and community partners to offer the widest possible curriculum that develops personal and social skills and ensures they attain suitable qualifications to progress to positive destination after school. Hi, I’m Alison and I’m absolutely delighted to welcome you to Little Bees with Alison! Little Bees is founded and run by me, a mum of two and a primary school teacher of over 16 years, with a huge passion for Early Years Development. During my teaching career, I have specialised in and led Additional Learning Needs and Foundation Phase across the school. I was also identified as an ‘Outstanding Teacher’ and was one of only 8 teachers to be selected across SE Wales to particpate in an ‘Outstanding Teachers’ Programme. After a long battle with infertility, I finally achieved my dream of becoming a Mummy when Joseph was born in 2016. Three years later, we completed our family with Charlotte. I absolutely love teaching and have often thought about other ways I could use my skills whilst also having a positive impact on my local community. I had noticed firsthand the lack of groups for new parents in my local area and the idea of Little Bees started. Having experienced the impact massage had on my own little ones and our bonding, this was something I was excited to share with other new parents and carers. In 2019, I trained with Hands on Babies, the first UK baby massage and baby yoga training organisation to have received accreditation from the Royal College of Midwives for its courses. I enjoyed the massage course so much that upon gaining accreditation, I immediately set to work on completing the lovely yoga course! My mission with ‘Little Bees with Alison’ is to offer friendly and relaxing classes for all parents and carers in a supportive and non-competitive environment within their local community. As a new Mum, I was desperate to not only do lovely activities with my baby, but I was also keen to make new friends. This is exactly what I want to bring to my community with ‘Little Bees’. I completely understand the challenges new parents are going through and thought of supporting them brings me great joy. My teenage years... IMG_20200922_093644_1.jpg were spent hanging out in the school art department (regardless of what class I was supposed to be in!) and it was there that Mr Alston, my wonderful art teacher directed and nurtured my love of art. Studying Art & Design and then Illustration, was a great foundation to my art career and helped me refine my skills as an artist. But as a naïve graduate, passionately producing illustrations and trying to make it in the freelance world - I soon realised it was going to be more difficult that I thought! I'd been working in Children's Services for 15 years running Youth Participation Projects, managing a Gypsy Roma Traveller Project and delivering a provision of services for the most hard to reach communities. This provided me with the most amazing experiences, as well as allowing me to use my art to benefit these groups. It's been a wonderful journey of learning and a fantastic platform in which to build my business. In 2016 I decided it was time to give up the office job and focus all my time on my community art work. It's been a brilliant time and I'm delighted that I still have daily experiences of working with such amazing people, from our wonderfully interesting communities. I hope that even if it's just in some little way, I am able to make a difference to the lives of those that I work with, through the medium of visual art. Audrey But freelancing for a few years whilst volunteering in the community, opened many new doors and ideas of what I could do with my visual arts. I went on to complete a degree in Community Arts and continued to work with community groups. This is where my love of creating art in the community became well and truly set. My passion for mural painting was formed following the completion of two large scale mural commissions in Scotland. Then with London calling, I completed my next 30 metre indoor mural at a special needs adventure playground in Hackney. In 2007 I was introduced to the medium of mosaic and I just completely fell in love with it!
