WELCOME TO DURHAM TRINITY SCHOOL AND SPORTS COLLEGE Welcome to Durham Trinity School and Sports College. We are a generic special school educating pupils 2-19 years of age, with autism or profound, moderate, severe or complex learning difficulties. Some pupils also have additional medical, physical, sensory, linguistic or behavioural difficulties. All pupils at Durham Trinity School and Sports College have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP). Durham Trinity is a relatively new purpose-built school, situated on the outskirts of Durham City Centre. The pupils have access to specialist rooms and facilities such as ICT suite, sensory room, hydrotherapy pool, and a design Technology room. We are developing Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) areas; to allow them to access the curriculum and thrive in their interests and strengths. From September 2019, the school have introduced a 3-curriculum pathway to ensure the needs of the diverse school population are met academically, emotionally and physically; whilst providing challenge and support to ensure they are prepared for the next stage in their development, towards adulthood. We are a Sports College, providing an excellent provision that develops pupils’ physical skills and mental wellbeing, educating them about leading a healthy lifestyle, whilst having fun! Pupils have opportunities to access non-competitive and competitive sporting activities throughout the school year. We provide a Further Education Unit (FEU- Post 16) on site where the excellent provision continues until they are 19 years of age. Our greatest resource is the staff. They are supportive and highly skilled in SEND, supporting pupils throughout the school day to ensure they achieve their goals and become as independent as possible. Together with pupils, families and other agencies, we work together for the best outcomes for our pupils. I deliver quirky, unusual art and craft workshops in a number of local crafting venues across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire. I can also bring Quirkshops to any suitable venue and tailor the workshop to the specific needs of a client. The workshops typically last between 2 – 6 hours, occasionally more in-depth workshops may be held over a number of weeks. My background. I have always been creative but from an early age I had to choose between a scientific and artistic career. Having spent most of my childhood holidays in Devon with my head dangling over a pontoon staring into the green-blue depths and the curious creatures within, it seemed natural for me to study marine biology (you get the octopus logo now!). A convoluted route led me through a PhD studying marine neurotoxins to a career in Public Health for 18 years. But I always wanted to create. I took a year out and started to volunteer at a local community farm, FarmEco, a magical place with the most amazing people. That is where things fell together: connecting with nature, creativity and my desire to help people to improve their wellbeing. I can often be found at the farm, hands covered in charcoal or paint and looking windswept and with a smile on my face. Nature and wellbeing. I am passionate about the benefits to our wellbeing that creativity can bring and to combine this with immersing yourself in nature can be a powerful tonic. Many of my workshops take place entirely outdoors, spending time not just creating in but connecting with nature through simple practices which awaken the senses. By connecting with nature we develop a desire to care for nature and that is something we desperately need in this time of climate crisis. Workshops. The focus of the workshops is to nurture creative talent in everyone through a wide range of art and craft skills. The experiences are shared in a group but will be unique and personal (people won’t all produce the same thing at the end) and the process is every bit as important as the things that people produce.

Anna Palin-Swift MSc BSc (dual hons) PGDip Relationship Therapy Dip Sex Addiction Course Director – Working with Couples Course Tutor -Diploma in Sex Addiction After graduating from Keele University with a dual honours degree in Psychology and English , Anna moved to the University of Chester where she gained an MSc, researching into the reasons why young people may not access therapy and whether online counselling presents less of a barrier to this age group. She has a particular enthusiasm for working with young people and for online services. Anna is a member of the British Psychological Society. She is currently working with couple relationships in Private Practice and online for Relate. Anna also works in private practice,working with Couples and Individuals and has a special interest and expertise in working with sex and porn addiction.

M.O.P. FORMATION As you begin the journey of discerning your vocation, be assured that you are not left to yourself. The Missionaries of the Poor provides a comprehensive formation program that includes the opportunity to experience the life of brotherhood, a rigorous theological and spiritual training program and years of hands-on experience in our work. This formation consists of five stages: 1. Aspirancy (6 months to 1 year): New vocations begin with one year of introduction to the life and work of the Missionaries of the Poor. This period of formation takes place at the MOP mission in your home country. The goal of this period is simply to assist you in discerning whether God is calling you to serve Him with us. 2. Postulancy (6 months): Formation continues as you continue to test your vocation to religious life. If you grow in your conviction that the religious life is in fact God’s will for you, postulancy ends and you remove to the Institute’s headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica to continue formation. 3. Novitiate (2 years): The first year (canonical) of the Novitiate emphasizes prayer and contemplation and includes a 40 day retreat. The second year (apostolical) emphasizes the work or apostolate of the Missionaries of the Poor. 4. Juniorate (6 years): At the end of the Novitiate, temporary vows of six years is made. During these three years, brothers in formation continue to grow in the knowledge of the mission and works of the Institute. 5. Seniorate (life): With the approval of the Institute, brothers in formation may be admitted to perpetual profession, that is, vows for lifetime service. DID YOU KNOW? A home educator of two active and creative souls who loves playing, drawing and having the opportunity to play computer games (what kid in our current times doesn't appreciate a bit of crazy Minecraft character creation). Our days involve studying and exploring (with the encouragement of self-directed play) and creating experiences, whether artistically or venturing out to exciting places. Sometimes, the word 'I'm bored' pops into the day, and no matter how many things you buy to appease them, it is never enough. Still, that time of 'boredom' is essential for a wind-down or an excellent opportunity to practice mindfulness and recharge and relax to stimulate the mind creatively. I understand much better now that they learn best through creative activities and imaginative play. The key to success in education and the workplace is to be surrounded by inspiring and competent people who can give you the tools you need to reach their level, as well as the resources to do so. Our aim is first of all to ensure that the children know and understand what they need from the curriculum to pass their SATS, GCSEs and A-levels in order to satisfy the requirements of the education system. Yet more importantly to we seek to braoden their minds – to get them to want to learn and love learning by putting them in an environment with highly educated, motivated and intelligent teachers who have been successful in education and the workplace. Teaching staff include a mixture of highly qualified teachers, graduate students and other professionals who are keen to encourage children from all, and especially disadvantaged, backgrounds in to their professions such as engineering, the sciences, law and writing. We take those who are not professional teachers intentionally because many children would not otherwise be exposed to such high level professionals in their day to day lives, and these motivated, successful people have a wealth of specialist knowledge not taught in schools. We hope the children will be inspired by these people. Examples of what we have done outside of the curriculum include training children for the Maths Challenge which can eventually lead on to the Maths Olympiad and introducing some very basic ideas from number theory. One of our teachers was a philosophy graduate and tried teaching basic propositional logic and reasoning skills. Just before the last term ended, we started a program of reading classic English literature in the oldest classes and initiated a debating club. We also have an ambitious program in development to organize work experience and internships at big city firms, engineering companies and civil service institutions to show children what they can achieve if they put their minds to it. Finally, we want members of the community involved. They might teach, or act as classroom assistants or offer work experience or supervise behaviour – anything that gets parents involved with their children's education.
